Apple's next-generation iOS 7 mobile operating system is thought to be a candidate for the iPad mini 2, which could bring additional enhancements to the iOS 6 mapping system.
Not much is known about the hardware specs of the purported iPad mini 2, but analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted that the tablet will feature a Retina display with the same resolution as the current 9.7-inch iPad. If the rumor is true, the mini will have an effective pixel density much higher than that of the larger iPad. One plus of not changing the resolution is that developers don't need to waste time and money porting apps to yet another screen format.
It is expected that the iPad mini 2 will retain the same thin-bezel, rounded-edge design cues as the existing iPad mini. As for the thickness of the unit, it is not known if Apple can squeeze a Retina quality display into such a tiny package.
The iPad mini was the first form factor change for Apple popular tablet lineup, and many thought the addition was in response to a growing market for mid-size tablets. With the second-generation of the mini, Apple is expected to raise the bar by expanding features to bring the device more in line with its bigger brother.
