don't know what to tell you, i have that problem sometimes, but it isn't the same drive that came with my computer. usually it has to do with the apple cd/dvd extention being on, but sometimes it just does it for kicks. restarting usually clears everything up for me.

this probably isn't much help to you. sorry.

good luck.

:( My ibook (koobi, ibook 500/cd-rw/384) has its first servicable problem!!
I was cleaning it as usual, when I noticed the CD-RW wouldn't open. So I gave it the paperclip, and it popped open, no problem.

But it wont shut anymore, it just bounces back open and beeps (not the system, the drive actually squeals).

I know the drive is working fine otherwise because I held the door shut with a CD in it and it mounted fine.

I called Apple Tech Support and they say it could be misaligned inside. I'm thinking the locking mechanism is shot or something. I would rather not part with it for too long. That might be the case if they make me mail it in

Well, its taped shut right now, no sense to stop using it if everything else works fine, I'm taking it to the Apple Store or a local repair center saturday..

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, lemme know. Wish me luck

is it the drive that came with the computer, or did you get it later?

Nice that someone from the early 90's could help me :) (look at the post date)

I took my ibook to a support place, and here's something FREAKY that happened...

Í took it to a VERY respectable Apple supported repair place to hopefully get my drive swapped. I wont name it names, cuz I like the place... but this place did something WEIRD.

My system is Custom Configed, as you can see with the 20 gig HD. And when the tech support guys ran my serial number it turned up a COMBO Drive. That was freaky. I checked the serial that they ran, and it turns out to be a different Serial number than appears in my Apple System Profiler.

So, I got back to the tech person, asked if there was a mixup. She refused to check the serial in the system profile. They say they only use the serial number on the chassis of the machine. (They didn't have parts in stock anyway)

I had to get the thing fixed, so I left the iBook with them to send it to Apple, and with this Combo drive Serial Number on the repair form...

The million dollar question... What's going to happen???

Is Apple going to check both Serial numbers? Are they going to make sure they put back a CD-RW??? What if the repair requires more than just replacing the drive?? Will they give me a totally different machine (10 gig HD, 128... YUCK)

A combo drive "upgrade" sounds nice, but would suck for me cuz I actually need the burner at 8x. (The combo's only 4x)

IF they send me the combo, I'm sending it back... And I'll make sure they put the CD-RW back in. Problem is, the repair place is handling the repair with Apple. I wont know what happens till it gets back.

I really hope Apple's smart enough to see that the machine's a CD-RW... not a Combo...

that's odd. very very odd.

hope all works out ok.

(p.s. i've been cruising around in my time machine, and didn't bother to return to 2002 before i responded to your message. was still chilling in the 90s. )
