My miniBook shipped yesterday. Not "supposed to ship tommorow," or, "our sales rep will say they should be here in two weeks" (for the third 'two weeks' in a row). Nope, "They shipped, we have confirmation, 5 business days."
And thank g-d too, I think I was driving them nuts -- called every week. I was actually pretty cose to cancelling my order, but with Spring break next week, I'll only have limited work to contend with and no classes, so I'll have time to play with the thing. WEEHEE.
I could still cancel (no money down, used dept purchasing, they're getting some iMacs too) but for the (edu) price I'll get to finally try out a modern OSX mac.
It looks like I'll have one of the first dozen or so miniBooks in Toronto.
Get ready for the first real PB review!

Tell me about it. I know how many PB12's are actually coming in to Toronto in total, probably less than a dozen going out to all the T.O. area resellers combined. I was second in line with our dealer, but anyone who ordered aftee the first week may be waiting as long as mid-March!

It gets too warm for us in March, we like to hold it early. Hahaha.
Officially, we call it "Reading week," but Americanisms forever leech into our dialect, like 'semester,' we really are on 'trimesters.' Three 4 month blocks (well 3 or 3 and half month blocks) including the summer: Sept-Dec, Jan-mid-April, May-August 1st. I've planned most of my academic years around a trimester, taking something in the summer, and something less during the fall and winter. Work and grad classes are a little different, particularly the perpetually extended deadlines which offer a lot more flexibility. August is always off unless you teach ESL for extra cash, which for the first time I mightn't have to do this year.
But yes, canucks are a bit weird. I think it has to do with the steady diet of beer and beaver tails.

I have had the 12" powerbook for like a day and a half now and the touch pad is something new for me. I have found that the lighter you touch it the more responsive it is. If I press hard it gets kind jerky and slow but if I just slightly touch it it works much better.
This is my first powerbook and I'm in love :D Actually thinking of selling my 17" iMac and getting another powerbook (This one is supposed to be my wife's)

OK, sorry to bring this back up, but tommorow *might* be the day, they said tommorow but possibly early Thursday (depends on the delivery folk I guess)
I was very tempted to call them today, but seeing as I've driven them silly for the past month and that they told me WEDNESDAY, Thursday at the latest, I'd seem like a total A-hole -- usually not a hang-up for me, but I don't want to seem desperate -- if I just called them up to ask again. So I'll call them at lunch tommorrow. Hoping that I have better delivery service than poor Murbot has had to suffer, and by tommorow night I might be playing with my 12".
If not, Thursday morn, but the play by play will be a bit harder to give, must play hookie from work (call-forwarding = easy) drop into uni, hope dept has books, get down to the auto show, snap a few picks, get home unpack book, play, post initial thoughts, pics, get needed wares. It's not like I have research projects or papers that need doing. HAhaha...

The suspense is killing me... (he says, typing on his 12" Powerbook in quite a smug fashion).
I have to say, I'm coming to terms with the trackpad. Like Elric said, the gentle touch works best, but I'm far too used to using a trackpad on my Windoze machine and have yet to fully recalibrate my fingers to suit the Powerbook. This will come in time, I am sure.
I still can't believe how quiet my little baby is, even when the fan ramps itself up (yes, doing 3D renders on one of these is possibly a bit silly, but it didn't crash and it looked good, so yah!), and the build quality is unparalleled. I will be embarassing several Windoze-freaks with it tomorrow. :)
Matsu

I can tell you that a gentle touch, with the sensitivity turned to maxx seems to zip the pointer around the screen with aplomb. Yeah, I'm a geek, I booted it down to the office to pick up the baby. Almost killed a few pedestrians along the way. I though I was gonna have top wait, but the airport card arrived too so I snagged it and set her up.
The milf at the dept office really like my book, we chatted for a bit, something about having twelve inches of power in your lap does it for 'em. Anyway, she's a mac user and had some serious lust for my 12, so naturally I BS'd her a bit and told her, "Yeah, I'm a long time mac user, I had a gum drop before this." She's all, "Me too! I love it." I bet you do, Matsu thinks to himself. Then my buddy shows up (who's buying the Newton) We went to my car, grabbed the newt and headed to a pub. That was good, the cash paid for the airport and a stack of blank CD's. We actually had some work to do so grabbed a booth. A pitcher of beer and some dusted riblets later and it's almost midnight. He was dying to check out my book, so while we worked I quickly ran through the start up, not including online stuff, I installed the airport card, and charged her up, making surre not to lose any bits by putting everything in a plastic shopping bag.
The fit and finish are impeccable, and the unit didn't even get warm while charging, playing a couple of CD's and checking out classic.
It's too early for first impressions, OSX is so new to me. I really don't knwo how to do anything in OSX and will take a little time to get used to it. I gotta get some wares. The documentation is WAY TOO THIN. It came with 4 discs: a blank CDR, quickbooks, a hardware recovery CD, and one OSX 10.2.3 plus other stuff disc. Nothing to install, I think it's all on the HDD already.
The screen and keyboard are BEA-U-TI-FUL! Look and feel excellent, a quick run through of the solid colors reveals what seems to be a flawless panel, no dead pixels (thank you powers that be)
So, get ready for a real review the second I can get my apps ready. My bro has the P4 working Kazaa right now.
Murbot, PM me please, I got some pics for you and a few questions.

Sounds pretty normal. My dual 500 ripped 192VBR at around that consistently, though it did get up to about 15x or 16x at times. That was with 512 MB of RAM. I'll have to try importing a CD on my iBook, see how fast that goes.

Not bad, considering I have a GHz TiBook here sucking wind and getting about 7-9x at 160.
Slower drive though.
iBook 800, 640 RAM, 160VBR, went between 5x and 6x most of the time.
A friend of mine had a dual 867 and it encoded over 20x. Now he has an Athlon XP2200+ and it encodes at over 40x.
Feh. I have all my music imported anyway, so it's not a major concern for me. No real bragging rights, but on the other hand, he can't take his computer with him can he? ;)

Battery life is easily 3 and a half to 4 hours. Conservative use, say, just the word processor, should put you close to 5. I've still got 55 mins showing despite watching a bit of U2 on DVD, ripping a whole CD, farting around with iPhoto and word test drive, and alternately making the display as bright and then as dim as possible.
In a slightly dim ambient, 2-3 bars are completely readable, the display gets very very bright at maxx brightness, nice. Just typing on a white back-ground, you can get away with one tick.
I forgot to mention, the physical installation of airport extreme is a little frustrating. maybe I was just too afraid of fvcking something up, but I guess once it's in there there's no need to touch it again.

I decided to throw something a little more compicated at it. 112-224VBR highest quality. This time I used so more intricate acoustic guitar with african vocals. The first track takes a couple of seconds for the rate to climb up... 2...3...4...5..6..7,8,9,10 and again it levels off between 10-12X fluctuating a bit more than the previous one.

Playing freshly ripped Annie-flore Batchchiellilys at full balsy. I must say the sound is excellent for a laptop, and quite loud for a laptop, not "loud" but very nicely balanced.
Gotta say a few words about the iTunes encoder. at 112-224VBR (highest quality) it deals with the intricacies of voice and guitar quite well. Seems like a very solid encoder to me. Mebbe there's better out there, and some of it has to be the balance of the PB speakers -- they're eminently listenable for what they are -- but I'm surprised that MP3 is as listenable as it is. I'm gonna ripp a 320 highest quality track or two to see if it rises to the level of CD quality. I'm very surprised.
I've still got 19 mins of battery life left.
I can drain this thing and leave it to charge over night, yes?
Still cool too. Mild, I mean mild, warmth from the left palm rest. I wonder what some of the heat-scare mongers were babbling about? Theres an even distribution of similar warmth across the left 2/3rds of the machine. Hardly even warm, I don't see how some could describe it as hot, no way.

Does it come down to drive speed, basically? iDunno, just asking.
I can't say enough about the sound system. It's really really good. For such a small machine it's incredible. Voices come off it great, particularly female voices. I have it cranked out on the desk in my room and while it isn't loud it fills out the small room nicely. big noise would overpower it, but you could definitely get by in a quiet workspace with just the internals for some background music or to kill the din of florescent lights, vents etc etc.
So far it's very quiet, and still hasn't gotten hot or even really warm eiher. very nice. When my new mac apps get here, I'll do a performance review.
played with iCal, I don't find it that intuitive, and it's a little odd/buggy.
But I'm a total OSX newbie really, and I suppose I have lots of lingering windows habits to overcome first.

Set the encoder to the lowest possible bitrate, that'll result in the fastest encode times. Encode a song from the CD, preferably the last track on the disc. That should tell you how fast your drive is for DAE...

I'm waiting for some software to arrive before I give some detailed performance impressions later.
I was going to wait untill the next day to run over tomy dept and pick up the book because I didn't think I could make it there before close ad I don't have a key. But at the urging of Murbot I sped through Toronto rush hour traffic, meaning I waited in frustrating stop and go wondering if I was just wasting my time.
Well, I got there with people weorking late, so no problems. While there I ran into a work buddy who had to buy my Newton and we needed to finish up some stuff, thusly, my baby was booted up for the first time at the local pub. Our booth had a plug, so no biggie. I still haven't set up the all the internet profiles.
I will need to connect to:
-home wireless, as soon as my brother installs the linksys.
-home wired cable
-2 libraries, both wireless and wired
-work wired (WTF? why can't we get airport? Actually, I think my boss is getting it for his own use, which means I can probably leech it if I'm close enough.
Does OSX do all this automagically? I assume different connection profiles are easy to manage. I'll get it sorted (at least at home) tommorow. Still haven't even put this baby on the internet yet, but wireless or no, I'm gonna go online, register and install 10.2.4. I did however take some time to put all my contact info back into the machine, by hand, and I tried to post my schedule into iCal, which I find a little buggy and weird. MUST GET MOUSE. Trackpads are OK, this one is good, but I need a mouse. I wish I could get wireless Bluetooth job, but Apple may or may not work with this yet??? What's up with that? Meh, I'll get something cheap and wired.

It also depends on the wireless network -- my uni requires that we log on to a VPN in order to get the web wirelessly. Unfortunately, they have yet to update their VPN security gateway to support OS 10.2.
It makes me sick to see PC-mongers toting their books around, surfing the web during, um, I mean before, lectures...for this reason alone I might consider getting Virtual PC (or maybe waiting 'til microsoft cleans up its code - praying they won't kill it).
Anyhow, yeah - X automatically detects any network connections, provided you have it selected (on) in network port configs.

Eugene, I got your results.
encoded 8 bit stereo mixed, songs not playing while importing.
returned 24-25.5X
On a side note, there doesn't seem to be much speed difference between 224VBR and 320kbps. That second CD I ripped was an old sinatra at 320Kbps VBR (highest) and the speed was about the same as 224 VBR.
Does this help? Would a faster drive make for faster encoding say in the 128-192 range? I wonder what speeds I could get out of a 52X firewire unit?
Somebody please fully restore my account, I want to post from my beautiful new baby and not this Gateway.

My brother works for an ISP and has Cisco site access, and he sent me 3.7.2 of the VPN client (my uni uses the Cisco VPN) I installed this on my PB and went out to try it, but it was to no avail -- couldn't make a TCP connection (everything else preceding that was successful as far as connecting went). So I'm guessing it may be up to them to update their end of the setup. Our IT guys are so arrogantly unresponsive...anything you have (if a different version of the soft., etc.) would be great. :)

Well, I was encoding a little higher than that at 224 and 320 when I gave my first numbers. So maybe I'll se a point or two increase, but no biggie, I'll take the higher bit rate, 192-224VBR is probably the sweet spot for ripping most CD's.

Ya think? Sorry guys. Interestingly, I'm developing a disdain for all other machines: damn RDF, it's one thing to rip apart keynotes from afar, but it's quite another with such a strong emitter sitting right next to me. :D

I hope that you're going to add RAM to that iBook if you plan to use Mac OS X. I would suggest that you max it out, if you are able to do so.

I would've just kept the order for the 700. Much better then bothering with eBay IMO.

Having serious laptop envy right now!
BUT, I have to say that you win the award for "most often altered thread title". Jeepers, just name it something like "Matsu's Ultimate Minibook Thread" and have done with it!
sheesh~

Are you kidding me? You would rather have:
700mhz cd-rom 16mb vram 20gb hd pastywhite case
over
800mhz combo drive 32mb vram 30gb hd glassy case
??????
I would say it is well worth the extra $80 or so. O_O

Until you actually get the iBook I'm gonna say yes.
