View Full Version : Is it possible to bring back an archive of all old posts?

Mods:

Is it possible to archive all the old posts from a long time back? There was some valuable information there, and it would be great to the Mac community to have back.

Great job bringing the fourms back!

agreed. it's hard to consider AI "back" when all its history is lost

Everything was lost, I believe.

Actually, there may be a way of resurrecting some of the posts. For example, I've successfully acquired the old "QT - How do I save a stream..." thread (see the new thread <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=000002" target="_blank">here</a>).

I'll continue hacking away at this and see what I get. In the meantime, if anyone wants to see old threads, and happen to have a bookmark to it, post the address here. I'll see what I can do.

I was afraid that had happened. :(

Is there any way to get in touch with the guys that were running the Cube?

AppleProphet
11-12-2001, 10:26 PM
Believe me, we have tried numerous times to get in touch with the people that were running the server (Cube), but they are.... ummm... "different". If you get ahold of them, it's something like

"Can you restart the Cube?" - us

"What's a Cube?" - them

You get the idea...

But whatever you're doing KCH, keep doing it. If we can find enough of them, we may be able to have a nice "Archive" or past posts or something like that.

Seriously, how do you do it?

King Chung Huang
11-12-2001, 10:40 PM
I'm working on it...

I've dug up a sparse smattering of pages. Stick around for another 20 minutes or so, and I should start uploading them to my server.

I'll be recreating the raw directory structure of the old AppleInsider pages at <a href="http://commons.ucalgary.ca/king/appleinsider" target="_blank">commons.ucalgary.ca/king/appleinsider</a>. I don't know how much I'll be able to get, but everything I get will be there.

One question for everyone:
Would you like me to batch modify the links inside the posts so that links to other pages (eg: page 2 of a 3 page post) work, or would you like me to leave them "as is", frozen in time?

King Chung Huang
11-12-2001, 10:58 PM
OK. I've just uploaded some pages from "Forum1". Forum1 appears to be Future Hardware. Again, visit <a href="http://commons.ucalgary.ca/king/appleinsider" target="_blank">commons.ucalgary.ca/king/appleinsider</a> to browse the stuff.

Fran441

That's awesome. Maybe you could work with the admins if you get enough of the old posts and topics to make archives here!

King Chung Huang
11-12-2001, 11:54 PM
Well, there's about 228 pages from the old Future Hardware (Forum1) up now. I'll work on others later.

(edit: noted that Future Hardware is Forum1)

When in doubt give it to Chung, he can find anything, even the people who own the cube and are silly enough to have it hosted with the people they did so that all this crap happened in the first place and now our history is lost can't find it ...

But Chung can. Long live Chung javascript: x()

Keys? I'm definetely not the right person to ask. In fact, I carry two sets of car keys around with me because I'm bound to either lock one in the car, or leave it behind at my office (really irritating when you've walked five minutes to the parking lot). ;)

Update! Take a look at <a href="http://commons.ucalgary.ca/king/appleinsider/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi/CurrentHardware-06.04.2001.html" target="_blank">this blast from the past</a>. :)

Many of the links to the threads work, and the icons, logos, smilies, etc. have been restored.

Look for a big update across all the forums this evening.

King: Are you using the <a href="http://www.archive.org/index.html" target="_blank">Internet Wayback Machine</a>? You need to tell us how you work your magic.

PS: King, I'm really impressed by the number of threads you've been able to resurrect so far. There's several of them with Kormac posts. Kickass! And thank you, keep up the good work!

Yup. You got it. :) I recently saw a link to it on the NewtonTalk mailing list, and thought I'd give it a try. They've got a lot of the pages. I've finished going through and downloading everything they have. I'm just in the middle of batch processing them now so that images and links get linked up properly. I'll upload them to the server I've listed above later on today.

Everything I download is processed and posted at <a href="http://commons.ucalgary.ca/king/appleinsider" target="_blank">commons.ucalgary.ca/king/appleinsider</a>. When I've got some time, I might work on making them more navigatable.

Well, I'm not getting anywhere tryinng to parse out the topic names, poster, and dates out of the pages. I haven't been able to come up with a grep search pattern in BBEdit to get that yet. Anyone have any ideas?

Dude you are the man. I just read a thread I posted right before I went off to camp in SV. Ahh, those were the days.

I like the color scheme. I kinda miss it. Maybe I'll go make a suggestion.

Jonathan: Are you planning on copying the pages recovered by King to appleinsider.com? I think that would be nice.

OK, I just figured out that the URL for the first and original "2400 dreams" thread was

<a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001780.html" target="_blank">http://forums.appleinsider.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001780.html</a>

Unfortunately, the Wayback Machine doesn't have that one. :(

I was going through Forum 1, which was (and now again is) Future Hardware. Quite a few of the good Kormac threads are there. Kickass!

Now we just need to tranfer the files from King's server to the AI server and implement a searching mechanism of some sort.

Yeehah!

Does anyone know where the Cube with all the stuff is located at? Maybe someone is in that part of the country and could do something about it?

I assure you if we ever found out where it is, there would be a raid on that facility :p

Sadly, the hosting company who had it, along with several other cubes, disappeared. Many people lost their entire websites. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

If only there was a way to revive the old 2400 dreams thread. :(
