Hi,
Who the hell is moderating fireside chat? Ned? I can't PM Ned. Who do we contact when we need moderation/admin help in FSC? I sent this question to Jonathan weeks ago and never heard back.
TIA,
Scott H.

Okay so who do we PM then? You?

We all moderate FSC, but its very nature means it's moderated a little less. :)
Brad's currently fixing up the PM notification feature in vBulletin, so when we get that up and running, responses to PMs should, uh, theoretically come a little quicker.

More like: We don't want to be personally resposible for locking threads or any other activity that may be unpopular so an anonymous mod account is what was made.
If you want to moderate, do so openly, if you use Ned Flanders, say who you are when doing so. Why hide? This is not a popularity contest, and if you think it is, you should not be a moderator.

It's epidemic I tell you!
11 locks in the last two months?! GESTAPO!

Actually, the actions of Ned Flanders are more often than not the result of a discussion involving all admins and mods.
If you have a problem with any of the decisions, address them to any admin or mod.
Changes are a-comin', anyway.

Since moderators are not all-seeing gods you are more than welcome to point things out to them. We do other stuff besides follow you around to make sure everyone is being nice to you. We call what we see, we can't be on top of everything all the time since we are people in the meat world that do stuff.
I have gotten maybe 2 private messages saying "this person is attacking me". Try it sometime.

When I've closed a thread in Fireside Chat (a move that has nearly always been 'unpopular'), I've explained my reasons for doing so in a post before locking it.
The use of 'Ned Flanders', I believe, is partially so all of the mods (if they choose) can have access to moderate FSC without reaching the 'moderator limit' that's on the other forums.

I am not directing my response at one particular admin or Moderator. It is to everyone. FC is fine except for the fact that there is no moderator assigned to it to be personally responsible for it. I am aware that Groverat is one who usually hangs out there, politcal and religious arguments seem to be a bright spot for him. :p However using an anonymous account is rediculous. If you want to moderate FC, have yourself assigned to it, and then moderate appropriately. Don't bait people in one thread while shutting them down for similar reasons in another under Ned Flanders.
This to me hits on one issue that I don't think all the moderators are in agreement on and I would like to know what their opinion is.
When you became a mod it seems to me that your role on the board changed. YOu are now supposed to moderate discussions, not fule fires and bait people for your amusement. Amorph is a good example of moderating, and Powerdoc, and Belle for the most part as well. I am sure there are others, those are the ones I have the most respect for overall though. If moderator is starting, spurring on or fanning a flame war then there is a problem. Whether you have your "moderator hat" on or not. In that case you have a situation where the inmates are running the asylum. It also leads to lack of respect for the moderators as they are seen as nothing more than glorified trolls who can get away with their actions because they know someone and have a bit more power than the rest of us. Everytime I say anything about it, I am told they are looking into it and nothing more. If I say anything here I am derided by certain moderators. Belles response was what I consider to be appropriate, Groverats was not. Two good examples of which I speak. :(

How was my response inappropriate, aside from the fact that my little internet handle was next to it?
Maybe NoahJ is just sensitive to folks who mention syphilis and the AI Gestapo? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

grr, just wrote out a long reply and it got eaten by UBB. no wonder UBB is so bloated....
anyway, just wanted to say that i know we'd talked about posting under different names when in FC to keep the mod/admin tag from having a detrimental effect on FC and what we're posting.
i know that i always try to make sure that people understand that this is my post, not something that's AI backed, and that what i'm saying is my opinion.
that being said, groverat and i are about hte only two who consistantly post in FC, and i know that i've fanned the flames a few times.
i do like to think that although i'm fanning flames here and there, most of those are based in fact, and that they aren't to be taken to heart. FC shouldn't be taken any more seriously than FH as far as i'm concerned. i don't have any problmes with what people write as long as they can back up what they're saying, and keep from personal attacks.
however, if my writing is bothering a lot of the membership here i would have no problem refraining form FC. it's fun, but it's not that important.

A moderator simply dismissing a complaint as not worthy of real discussion simply because he/she may be the one being discussed. A moderator should set the bar for civility and discussion on the boards, if any wish to raise it after them then fine. However, the level to which your responses sets the bar is inadequate to the issue at hand, and this is common for you until the heat is on. Then it's, "Private message me or an admin if you don't like it."
No hypersensitivity that I can see. I expect moderators to moderate, not perpetuate the problems they are supposed to alleve. Is that so wrong?

I guess we have a different standard as to what a "complaint" is. If someone can give me a specific issue then yeah, let's talk, but when I see baseless accusations against the moderators (not just me) I don't take it very seriously.
Someone saying "OMG, yer mean!" isn't very telling. Again, a specific issue would be nice.

I think you have a skewed vision of what a moderator should be, and pardon me for coming out with the obvious, but this is merely a personal issue against me.
You say "this is directed at all moderators" but we both know that's garbage. You don't like me and that's the only issue.
There's a difference between "fanning the flames" and being an outright troll. Sometimes valid and well-put opinions will enrage certain members no matter how passively they are written.

Are they perpetuating the problems?
You haven't made a case that they are.

Yeah, I hate you Groverat. That is why I defend you in one breath and complain about you in the next. It's hate. Grow up.
