iBook has no sound except for startup

I'm trying to troubleshoot a 600 MHz G3 iBook and the only sound that it makes is the startup. I open the sound control panel and when I try to adjust the volume from low to high, the box moves back to the lowest volume. I also do not see any options available under the input and output tabs of the sound control panel. Any software or tests I should run? What should I look for? The iBook is running in OS 9.2.2, and any help would be most appreciated.

Delete the sound preferences under system folder/preferences.
