View Full Version : View of Earth and Jupiter from Mars
It's amazing how something always picks up my space cadet enthusiasm after being beaten down.
Earth, Moon, and Jupiter, as Seen From Mars (http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2003/05/22/)
What does Earth look like when viewed from Mars? At 13:00 GMT on 8 May 2003, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) had an opportunity to find out. In addition, a fortuitous alignment of Earth and Jupiter---the first planetary conjunction viewed from another planet---permitted the MOC to acquire an image of both of these bodies and their larger satellites.

reminds me of a bit of brian regan (daap://66.108.19.106/)'s jokes. kind of interesting. i'm surprised that nasa couldn't afford color cameras.

Cool, but very hard to see. :D

that's pretty sweet.
maybe if the australians flick their lights again we could be a signal lamp sending pan-galactic morse
Voyager 1 was tasked to shoot the view home as it left our neighbourhood
the result is described as a Solar System Family Portrait (http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/photo_gallery/photogallery-solarsystem.html)
alternative download/caption from APOD (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020214.html)
details of the Mars Global Surveyor MOC camera subsystem are here (http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/database/MasterCatalog?sc=1996-062A&ex=1)
as for black&white -vs.- colour sensors, it's partly a matter of available technological capabilities (which curiously mimic some human capabilities)
a nice intro to colour in the eye is here (http://www.abelard.org/colour/col-hi.htm) including footnotes on the evolution of colour vision and evolution of the eye (for those who frequent the evolution threads)
clever interactive colour explanations [click R-G-B or C-M-Y-K] here (http://www.soc.soton.ac.uk/JRD/SCHOOL/mt/mt001a_2.html)
colour CCDs are less sensitive than b&w due to alignment of sensor grid in filtered RGB where 50% green gets picked up, but only 25% red and blue
Hubble is only grayscale, but a combination of wavelengths gets colourized (http://heritage.stsci.edu/commonpages/infoindex/ourimages/color_comp.html)

quick exp. of color astrophotography:
use a b&w ccd camera to take 4 pictures 1 each through a clear, a red, a blue, and a green filter. Then combine 'em (you can do it in PS). That's how all the color pics here (http://eastern.edu/academic/trad_undg/sas/depts/physsci/index.html) were done.

not bad...
but IIRC, the critical signal in old school science fiction was:
--_.-_.-._..._/ _-._._._-.._..._/ _.--_---_--_._-.
(where the / represents a word break and the underscore separates letters)

i think a combination of the two plus a little extra will work:
.-- . / -. . . -.. / .-- --- -- . -. --..-- / -... . . .-. --..-- / .- -. -.. / -- --- -. . -.-- .-.-.-
