No new digital device

how late can apple introduce a digital device and still have it be in time for christmas?

does anyone still think that there is another digital device coming out before christmas...or at all?

They big Chrismass shopping season kicks off the weekend after thanksgiving. If they have it in stores that weekend then they make it.

2-3 weeks tops, but I don't know what type of device they could have. I am not anticipating a new device but I do like surprises.

I think getting iPods into Target, Best Buy, and Dell is the extent of Apple's big Christmas plan.

Apple looks more focused on selling its ipods at the moment. I dunn think Apple will be coming out with any idevices this year

Last year, Apple must have had the new Flat Panel iMacs ready near Christmas time. Instead, they waited another couple of months, and introduced them in January at MacWorld SF.

Was there a blunder? Was the new FP iMac NOT ready? How could two months make a difference.

I think this must have been a calculated risk by Apple. Let the current line-up carry things through the Holiday season and bring in the new flashy device in January to help keep up sales momentum in the New Year.

But, now that I think about it, the new iMacs didn't ship until March, so maybe Christmas 2001 was never really a possiblitiy. Well, you could go on and on trying to figure this out.

I guess my point is that we probably shouldn't expect that new iDevice until 2003.

This isn't worth starting a thread but I'll mention it here. Last night I had a very long dream in which I was using a small, hand-held Apple device. It was a little bigger than an iPod. I could hold it in two hands and work it with my thumbs. In the dream I was kind of looking over my own shoulder and I couldn't see it and I can't tell you what it did but I recall being totally awestruck, kind of like the first time I ran OS X on a cinema display. Towards the end of the dream I lost the device and searched for it frantically till I woke up.

Take this with a large lump of salt.

haha no i posted that i had a weird dream about a digi device for the first time, only i was looking at it on the apple site. if apple comes out with a product that reminds me of what i saw i'm gonna be really freaked out...what did your device look like?

thats crazy...although a little more easy to picture since the orig iBook was like a powerbook colored and modified a little, but tha fact you got the color right is odd because i dont think apple had anything in a tangerine color then...freaky

Cool. I almost never dream in color.

This thing couldn't be seen directly but I infer that it was roughly the size of a paperback book. Kind of like a larger version of the iPod but with buttons rather than a scroll wheel.

You know, it looks nice but that integrated wireless stuff is crap. Our corporation is sold on the idea of Cisco Aironet for wireless and you cannot get the proper encryption with these things unless you use a Cisco card. You can get it to work, but you have to remember the proper 26-byte key when accessing the access point through Airport.

No you don't. We have CISCO base stations set up throughout our campus and to connect we just need to put in &lt;username/password&gt; into the password field for airport. I believe the angle brackets tell the software to use LEAP authentication which is all our basestations will accept. I find that the entire airport interface is really cryptic this way. :mad:

At least they let you choose 128 bit encryption rather than have users put double quotes around the password. Each update to OSX seems to be ironing out the bugs and interface bit by bit. Hopefully we'll have something decent someday. :rolleyes:

Exactly my point. The access point encrypts with the Aironet wireless adapter via LEAP and authenticates via RADIUS but Airport doesn't. We work in an area where we have to use it based on HIPAA standards (hospital). It works if we also set the access point to a shared point.

It really is a big mistake that apple isnt updating the iMacs. I mean A WHOLE YEAR with the same basic setup? (well really 9-10 months, considering the delays)

oh and if they are planning on releasing an iDevice, they really should try and get it out before the X-mas season to get as many sales as possible...

you could also argue the quarterly result aspect... does it make more sense to release something at the beginning of a quarter or in the middle revenue wise?

The LCD iMac was late coming to market because of unexpected manufacturing problems. That's it. It was well publicized after the unveiling.
