[The Official Bitchers against the new G5 cases thread.]
I know that many hate the new case...so if you hate it, what would look better in your eyes? Huh, punk? ;)

The mesh isn't so bad unto itself, it is the graceless rectangular cutout for the Superdrive and the prospect of having FW and USB cords dangling from half way up the machine.
The Superdrive door should have had a little curve to it like the original Quicksilver, and the front ports should be droped to the base of the machine. Both of these are relatively easy to do without obstructing airflow.
The blank mid-section could then be dressed up with an internal speaker or the Apple logo, etc.

Oh, knock it off. It's beautful :D
Makes the G4 towers look bulky, overdone and cumbersome, IMO. The G5 is sleek and mean-looking!
As for the USB and FireWire ports on the front: a) the smartest thing about the computer and b) I'd imagine they're strictly for quick, temporary connections (digital camera, camcorder, iPod, iBrator, etc.) and not intended for permanent connections to your printer, scanner, etc.
There are USB and FireWire ports on the back for that stuff.

There are 9 fans in the darn thing! And with that much power (600W), the laws of physics don't apply.8)

I think that the sudden break from perforated to polished was too...sudden. And the holes look too small. I think that the vents maybe should be in the style of those on the sides of the iBook: rounded rectangles.
It matches the magnet/pushpin boards I have above and on my desk perfectly. I have 0 complaints about the new design.

(well, you can't really see from this, but they have the exact same hole pattern as the new G5)

The only thing I don't like is the perforated panels and the color of the finish. Maybe if the panels were a little darker and the case lighter or the case lighter and the panels dark it might look ok. The mesh panels just look like garbage to me. I plan on taking all the pnales off, how ever many will come off. Then I will paint the rest of it in some bizarre fashion. This is the great thing about the metal case - easily customizeable,
My theory is that Apple plans for the future. Apple/Ive plan out the style changes of the powermacs. They make like 5 or 6 designs and rate how they look. Then they produce them backwards from ugliest to coolest. So according to this theory the current G5 is the ugliest of the best and it will only get better from here on out.

IT looks like it could be a Borg Cube. I like it. Time to mod the case and to put some fiber optic cabling in the front that is attached to a color wheel. That would be some cool iCandy. Better still would be getting the color to match the CPU load. Mmmm... visual feedback. Take that Das Blkinin Lights.

This is a neat idea.
SOme kind of visual display of computer workload would be neat.
It could show all the major computer activity. Like RAM usage... BUS traffic.... processor load... all that stuff. It could be a stylized representation though. That would be awsome. ;)

of course, if you do it wrong you'll screw up the airflow horribly, and you machine will smoke and die. :)
just make sure to have some visual feedback for that problem.
:p
actually, the power supply on the bottom is a great idea. now you don't have that huge ass power cord hanging off the top of your machine. much nicer IMO.

You think that was a rant? Come on man, you've been here long enough... that was far from a rant. He's also not pointing out why he's wrong - Placebo never made his own opinion known. You're reaching. :)
The original poster asked what it should have looked like. pscates is saying that it looks exactly like it should - it's beautiful. I don't mind the old case though, I still think it's a great looking tower. I just love this new look a tad more.

I think you need to recalibrate your settings as to what you consider a "rant". I said, jokingly, "knock it off it's beautiful..." and added a great big laughing smiley to show that I'm being playful.
Then I PRAISE Apple for putting ports on the front and for the overall design.
Rant? Hardly.

With these closeup shots, it looks like the perforations are quite large. Almost to the point where the box itself is semi-transparent enough to see the insides.
The issue with the front ports is a tough design decision. It needs to be there, but aesthetically, it does stick out a bit. But lowering to the bottom portion creates problems for those who leave their towers on the ground.
One thing for sure, Apple designs are always controversial.

One other thing...does it not seem that this enclosure in it's simplicity is a lot cheaper for Apple to manufacture than the current G4 plastic tower?

Yea, I know it's my first post, bu i've been reading those boards for *a few* months.
Do you remember the transparent aluminium alloy posted somewhere in the future hardware forum a while back? I'd want my G5 to have the exact same case built of it.
UPDATE: Here's the thread (http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24856) amd here's the link (http://www.rense.com/general20/transparentalum.htm). Note that it's not aluminium, it't Al2O3.

The tower does not need a speaker in the middle of all that cramped space that should be devoted to useful things like drive bays. External speakers (even cheap ones) are better anyway and free up the case (oops! it is now an "enclosure") for more important things. At least the firewire and USB plugs made it to the front of the case, even if they are poorly placed. Apple still has much work to be done before they get a fully functional case with space for drives and all the good things that belong on the inside. If the bottom "handles" disappeared the overall height of the case could be maintained and the height incorporated into the case for drive bays and more expansion slots of whatever type.

To be honest, I'm surprised at how many people dislike this new design (vocal minority?).
IMHO, hands down, this is the coolest tower Apple has ever made. I love the one-tone, muted metallic, functional sexy machine. And the (sand-blasted?) apple logo on the side is perfect.
Well done, Ives. I want one!!!
How long before 1337y Mc1337 gets those inards all aglow with LEDS?
I dig it. Very!
