For my money, nothing beats a home made Ginger Beer with that extra zang..I can drink gallons of the stuff.
( altough I must admit to a growing fondness for homemade lemonade ).
What chases your taste buds drink wise that is ?

Extra chilled Smirnoff Ice. I eat nachos with it, and the chips absorb all the alcohol.

why does it have to be non-alcoholic? pray tell.
because on a hot day i always think back to my gin and lemonade drinking days. (drink to me, drink to my health, you know i don't drink anymore)
not just any lemonade, paul newman's lemonade.
any decent gin will do, although not bombay, don't ask me why, it just tastes weird.

a pitcher of either margarita (on the rocks)
http://www.theworldwidegourmet.com/drinks/tequila/margarita.jpg
or bloody mary.
http://www.outofthefryingpan.com/cocktails/images/bloody.mary.large.jpg
you can also try a lemon drop(right name?) (equal parts gin and lemon juice) or a gin and tonic, both are "summer" type drinks. and good beer. but nothing to dark. dark beers need real food, which isn't very refreshing on a hot day.
there is no truly refreshing drink on a hot summer day that has no alcohol.

i was once going to write a book entitled "the bloody marys of milwaukee".....
i did extensive exhaustive research.
in milwaukee they give you a little six ounce beer when you order a bloody. it's very dear.

Ok. Given some of the nice drinks I've seen posted, I'll accept alcoholic ones too.
( I originally thought not to post alcoholic ones coz we'd done the boozy list a little while ago. especially beers.)
But since you mention Gin..well that is my favourite.
Gordon's Gin with a dash of Indian bitter tonic water, slices of lime & lemon with an island of cracked ice.
I heard somewhere that Gin is bad for the brain..but hells bells its too nice...:)

You Americans and your damn Bloody Marys! ;)
Couldn't stand it in the US, can't order a Caesar. Waiters give you this weird look like you have something oozing out of your nose. Next time I'm down there, I'm bringing a cooler full of Clamato.

for all seasons, i always have a few quarts of iced tea chillin in my fridge (the fake kind, with powder + water). its really good, and if u add enough of the mix u can have that sugar rush for minutes at a time.
but, on a particularly hot summer day (or any day where i happen to have a working stomach and atleast a partial liver), Guinness is good. I had a really good cider the other day, I don't remember what it was called though, with a lemony taste. That'd probably hit the spot just right on a hot day.

You know, I saw some clam juice in the grocery store the other day....it was in a little glass bottle. It looked just like something you'd get out of the cooler at a convenience store. All I could think about was running off a fake label from a laser copier and sticking it onto the bottle then dropping it into a cooler at a party....man that'd be a mean joke. Don't do it though! You never know who has seafood allergies!!!

from episode 4f22 (illegally retransmitted transcript from snpp):
Homer: Now what do you have to wash that awful taste out of my mouth?
Vendor: Mountain Dew or crab juice.
Homer: Blecch! Ew! Sheesh! I'll take a crab juice...

Inside or out? Inside, after cooling off, hot black coffee. It could just be the extent of my addiction, but I find that it keeps me from feeling the hit of heat and humidity when I head back out. Weird.
Otherwise, real brewed Iced Tea, not form a bottle, lotsa lemon and Orange Pekoe, then a good honey to sweeten, but busy-bee in a pinch will do. Doesn't really kill the thirst if you put too much honey in it, but it tastes good.
I also find that PC brand gingerale or Coca Cola (from a glass bottle, the canned and/or plastic bottle stuff just tastes different) or root beer, any of the three, chilled to within a half degree of freezing, goes down nicely when your outside sweating.
Bloody Caesars rule. Best hangover drink ever.

Another good nonalcoholic drink for a hot day is grapefruit juice with some peyote. Sure, it might taste good without the hallucinogen, but what's the point of that?
Giaguara

caipirinha.
split and squeeze a lime to a big glass, add some brown sugar to taste, then a shot of cachaça and fill with ice. if you like more cachaça use more of it, if more lime or ice, more of that. can't get any better.
and then eat some of those alcohol-absorpting chips...
That sounds lovely. What does cachaça taste like? Rum-ish? Or sweet-vodka-ish? I've only heard of, never tried. :(
Giaguara

it tastes rather mild ... vodkas, gins etc taste more sharp. it has some taste of sugar cane left, so if you ever have drank sugar cane juice (fresh, not canned!!) it is a bit like a mild tasting vodka with that flavour.
other good stuff:
- sugar cane juice. when it's fresh and made at the moment it's really tasty
- yerba mate. i'm nuts to drink it even cold ...
- cold espresso (sweetened) with ice crash or iced.

in egypt they make a hibiscus tea that was pretty tasty, after a hard day slog in the sun and sand. it took some getting used to, but by the third day i was addicted. however i kept wondering how it would taste with gin.....

Galco's (http://www.sodapopstop.com/home.cfm) rules for sodas and candies that you might have thought were't made anymore. If you live in SoCal, it's worth a trip, if not, they ship anywhere, practically.

sprecher root beer is made in milwaukee, and while researching my book "the bloody marys of milwaukee" i succumbed to the charms of sprecher root beer. it aroma is as fine as it's taste. it's especially delicious after an afternoon of lawn mowing.
but man it gave me the worst heart burn ever.
sprecher also makes regular beer, and it is my wifes favorite.

Evian water is good, and since i am merely a french alp's son, i will not say the contrary. But personnaly i prefer the volcano water : Volvic. In the contrary i hate heavy mineralized water like Contrex or Vittel.
One of the most refreshing non alcoholic drink i know is the Chose : half grapefruit juice, half schweppes.

For me, it's the exact opposite. Alcohol on a hot day just makes me feel hot and sweaty.
Iced tea, sparking mineral water, or just plain water for me.

HOT TEA
Strange as this quaint custom might seem, there are many parts of the world, where their idea of a " cool me down " thirst quencher is a hot cup of tea.
Bushies in Oz use it, as do many aboriginal people ( boiling a billy & then swinging it over their heads to settle the tea leaves ).
Don't know who invented the idea, but the English Raj in India used to make it a bit of a ritual that has since become mainstream Indian culture..or was it the other way around ?
Hot tea for cooling ?
Now that IS wierd !

So it's not just me! Though I use coffee. You just can't have too many espressos during a day. An nice espresso, long, with a little raw sugar, not too sweet. Ummm...
Too bad starbuck's/Timothy's/2nd Cup et al, make horrible espressos. When about I have to stick to "coffee" but at home I make a killer espresso.

yerba itself means herb, so one of its meanings is something to smoke ... yerba mate instead, here something about it (http://www.yerbamate.co.uk). that and tea takes away the sense of hunger of me .. for the rest, just didn't feel like eating.

Now I know what you mean.
Thanx.
For a moment there I thought you were slyly alluding to " Erbal " herb meaning .....weed:D Gunjagunja
But yes we have plenty of weird and wonderful herbal teas here too.
Mind you I have never tried drinking Clam juice..sounds Yuksville.
There some down here who reckon on making a Tea brewed up with gum leaves..
They say it gives them a clear head, others say it gives them visions..but mostly i've just seen them drink it, then run around like bushflies for a few minutes before falling over....
