So the G5 is finally here...
We've heard over the past two years what people want from Apple. Is this it?
Are we all now placing our orders?
Let's get some numbers.

Ordered my dualie on Tuesday.
$2399 ADC price.
Any ideas on when the ATI 9800 is going to be available. Don't want to order one if it is going to hold up my DP Dubgigger (like what happened with the GeFTi)?

I'm surprised by the number of people ordering the Dual G5. Being that the dual is the highest end model, normally, people would buy it less frequently. Hopefully, Apple has the ability to ship these machines.
As for me, it will be hard to resist a 970 15 Al book, but that is quite some time away. I'll never buy a desktop again.

the dual seems to be the sweet spot of price/performance. plus i don't want my G5 emblazend heat sink to be lonely.
(i like the laptops too but the fan is way too loud for me,)

Yes, the duals are definitely the most bang for the buck, but they are also the most expensive buck. I'm still surprised- I would have thought that more people would be going for the entry model. Hopefully, Apple can ship these machines. I can see that everyone is upping the RAM (no surprises here).
I like taking my computer to school, or to a local coffee shop to do coding, so a laptop is a must for me. AFAIK, portability rules.

I'm waiting at least until I can use my education discount again. Bought a Powerbook last fall. I think I might wait until the dual 3.0 ghz come out and buy one then. It will be my first Powermac.

It's like we complain that we want them to announce stuff ahead of time, but then they do and the wait is torture. :grumble:

Dual 2Ghz, Radeon 9800, Superdrive, Bluetooth.
Why are people buy more RAM? It's so much cheaper to order it somewhere else. This is probably also the case for the hard drive....

I have already ordered a Dual 2ghz machine with the optional Bluetooth module.
I am buying an extra 2 Gig of RAM from Crucial (maybe more depending on the RAM prices when the the machine ships!), and an extra 250Gig Hard Drive from a 3rd Party reseller...
Hope it will be 'snappy' ;) :D !!

I'm going to be getting a 1.8 through www.powermax.com. Why order through Apple? There are retailers out there that don't charge sales tax....

just so you know, most edu discounts can be used to purchase 1 laptop and 1 desktop per year, not laptop or desktop.

You have to order through Apple if you want to BTO, right (i.e. get the better graphics card or something)? Plus, if you qualify for the edu or government employee discount, it will be cheaper.

I won't touch rev a hardware. Sorry. It's kind of this policy me and the cat have.
Instead, the announcement of the G5 got me to order a dual 1.2GHz upgrade for my G4, as I feel that will hold me until the chip hits 3GHz and rev b or c hardware ships.
That's the plan :) I've been waiting for a G5 for years, but I always knew I wouldn't buy one immediately. I can wait an extra twelve months, thank you.

I might have held off, but not only have I ordered a dual 2.0 now, I fully intend to have the dual 2.0 on eBay in about a year when I'll be buying my dual 3.0 GHz system.
I expect there'll probably be a speed bump six months from now, but I'll skip over that one. So it'll be Rev A, then Rev C for me.

I was thinking about my G5 today, I really don't know if I can wait for another 2 weeks, let alone months!

yeah, i actually bothered with the 3 year warrenty on this one. first revision and all.
however i'm not really that worried about it. i haven't had a problem with a revision A apple product in ages. first revision iMac (CRT) was rock solid, LCD iMac has been rock solid, my Wallstreet PB was excellent.
the only two i wouldn't have been happy with would be the first iBook or the first TiBook.

I plan on ordereing a G5 this week, but I'm torn between getting the 1.8gig or the dual 2gig.
Looking at the specs it seems the only differences between the two are the bus speed (900Mhz vs 1000Mhz) and the processors.
I figure that 900Mhz is enough head room, but since the G5 is supposed to be so much faster than the G4in general are two processors necessary?
Are there no tests from any magazine, or Apple themselves comparing the speedsbetween the 3 G5 configurations?
I am going to try to hold out for 10.3.1 on the rev 2 G5s. I figure with new chips and a new OS there are bound to be problems.
However, if you pre-order at one of the Apple Stores they claim you can return the computer, no questions asked for 30 days. That is a pretty tempting deal. I may end up ...

i figured if nothign goes wrong within a year nothing is probably going to happen unless its a major glitch that starts happenign to ALOT of people...then apple fixes those types of thigns for free like the B&W Monitors

I'll buy when the dual 2Ghz becomes the mid range or even better low end. I'm hoping that means this fall or most likely MWSF 2004.
If Apple releases a 970 Powerbook MWSF 2004 I'll get that though.

I'm ready, I'm just waiting for release. I'm configuring 2GB's Ram, 1 - 250GB drive, and a yet unnamed (by me) graphics card. I' buying a 20" Cinema elsewhere.

I couldn't take it.
I bought the price reduced G4 tower a week ago and have now returned it.
The G5 pressure got to me. :D
Ordered a G5 2.0 GHZ dualie
Upgraded to a Radeon 9800 Pro
Added a Bluetooth Module
Everything else stock.
Will probably go with Crucial for some extra ram just before the machine ships.
Took back the 20" Cinema also a I will not have a need for it until August (hopefully)
I just hope they do at least a cosmetic change to the KB and mouse. The white is horrible. :(

PowerMac G5 prices in Moscow:
1.6 GHz == $2549 (AppleStore US price + $550)
1.8 GHz == $3079 (AppleStore US price + $680)
Dual 2 GHz == $3849 (AppleStore US price + $850)
All configurations are standard as in AppleStore US.
How do you like it? Considering the margin alone can buy a PC with a monitor. Considering that an average salary in design and pre-press in Moscow is $800. Considering that an average salary in Russia is about $60. These freaking dealers and customs extortion office workers must be on crack or something.
There is no such thing as Apple in Russia.

I keep trying to buy a G5 powerbook, but I can't seem to find where Apple is selling it from. I guess that I will try again in a year or so.
I recently ordered the standard 1.8 ghz machine with a 17 in Apple display, an airport extreme card and an upgraded video card. My display has already come. I love it and just can't wait for the G5 to come.

I'm placing an order for the Dual 2.0 G5 today.
The G5 has definitely gotten me thinking about getting a desktop unit again, especially with the no update to the Powerbook as if yet. I cant buy anyhting till the end of the year, unless some grand price drop happens. Gotta pay for new hardwood floors, bedroom furniture, and egagement ring. I guess I will be safe from the early prod problems short supply issues. The decision will be a tough one if the powerbook gets updated before then though. I really enjoy the mobility.

Add another dual 2GHz G5 to the list. Radeon 9800 + 1GB RAM + 250GB disk + Airport + Bluewtooth. My next purchase a few years from now will have to be 8x faster (dual 16GHz or quad 8GHz???).
