View Full Version : FINAL MWSF Predictions: The writing on the wall
CosmoNut
12-22-2001, 12:41 AM
NOTE, 1/5/02: This thread was created before the Apple.com slogans began. Upon further thought on the matter, it's possible that all the slogans point to a very fast machine that's capable of winning a bake-off with a PC. It's been done before, so that's nothing new, BUT Big Daddy S.J. said Apple would be *closing* the Mhz gap. This implies that Apples will soon match the Mhz of PC's. All things considered, I believe that Apple and Motorola aren't ready to release a G5, or ANY chip that can get to 2.2Ghz. All that said, my original predictions stand, slightly modified.
It's probably reasonable to assume that nothing else will be released or updated until MWSF now. After the recent update to the TiBook, miscellaneous rumors and articles, FCP 3 being released, etc., what are your final predictions?
Mods: Please lock this thread shortly before the keynote.
The Rules:
-- 1) Write only your thoughts on what you REALLY think will be released, updated, etc. IOW, serious predictions.
-- 2) Please only one post per user. Edit your post if your predictions change.
-- 3) No arguing or replying in rebuttal or support of someone else's prediction. This thread is not for discussion (goodness knows there's enough of those already), but predictions only.
-- 4) Please be fairly detailed. Don't just say "LCD iMacs and G5's," and leave it at that. Make your best prediction of basic specs.
My Predictions:
Steve walks out: "2001 was a great year. I'd even venture to say that it was the best year Apple has ever had. We released OS X AND X.1, two amazing portable computers, Final Cut Pro 3, yadda yadda yadda. Now we're looking to the future, and we believe that we've promoted this event as something worthy of what we're going to show you this morning. In fact, we were so excited about what we're releasing at this Expo, that we wanted to bring it to you a day earlier. So let's get started..."
Preview OS X.2 available early March.
Tout OfflineRT in FCP 3, demo FCP 3
Release & demo iMovie 3
-- OfflineRT, Better audio editing, in/out points, etc.
-- Available for $29.99 or free in new machines.
(But what ARE the new machines, Steve?)
Introduce new PowerMac Apollo G4's:
867Mhz/256MB DDR/60GB/Superdrive/NVidea GeForce 3/$1699
1.1Ghz/256MB DDR/80GB/Superdrive/NVidea GeForce 3/$2299
1.3Ghz/512MB DDR/100GB/Superdrive/NVidea GeForce 3/$2899
Dual 1.1Ghz/512MB DDR/100GB/Superdrive/NVidea GeForce 3/$3499
Steve: "These machines are FAST! And to demonstrate, we have [fill in the blank] from Adobe with a demonstration."
-- Mac to PC bake off
-- Preview of Photoshop X.
Steve: "Although a lot of software is now native in OS X, there's still more that you want. Today, we have some new key programs for you to use natively in OS X."
-- Intros Macromedia guy with Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash for OS X.
-- Probably a couple other companies.
Steve: "So we've updated the PowerMac G4. I bet your wondering about our displays."
Price drops:
15" now $499
17" now $799
22" now $1999
Steve: "So all of our computers have LCD's across the line -- except iMac. Today we're going to change that. Since it's release in 1998, iMac has had the same basic form factor, and it's served millions of schools and home users very well. With the advent of the LCD display, we wanted to redo the iMac, and that's what we have to show you today. Introducing iMac LCD:" Now with Sahara processor.
600Mhz/128MB/40GB/CD-RW/15" TFT/Gigabit Eth./$1099
700Mhz/256MB/60GB/CD-RW/15" TFT/Gigabit Eth./$1399
800Mhz/256MB/80GB/CD-RW/15" TFT/Gigabit Eth./$1599
-- Other features: 15lbs., 1foot square footprint, Indigo/Snow/Crystal colors
Steve: "So we've updated the Power Mac, iMac, previewed OS X.2, released iMovie 3, and dropped our display prices. You would think there's nothing left. But...we have ONE MORE THING. Presenting:
The "iPod Camera" & iPhoto software
Camera: Based on same architecture of "iPod MP3", 3 Megapixel camera, 1.5in. LCD screen. Can ALSO play MP3's, and connects to iPod MP3 for extended storage. $499.
Software: Simple image editing incl. red-eye-reduction, titles, cropping, rotating, color correction, brightness/contrast, yadda yadda. Avail. on new Macs and free from Apple web site.
I know I'm off on some of the specs for the camera, IF it even is coming.

IBM "sahara" (4stage 512L2 256bit ) is likey to BLOW past G4 7450's at similar clock speeds, in non Altivec stuff (not that there is much) should do alot for notebooks less power and way more speed. if G4's haven't scaled well? we may not see em for a while. whatever it is it better be good.
G4s-same case (needs sound input come on)
866,933,1000 all get some kind of cheaper GF3
imacs-???case GF2mx
733,800,866 or 700,800,900 if no new board
ibook
600,700
ti book
667,800
who knows they need a lot

If the forthcoming powermac is what you've both stated above in term of speed... then I won't buy one..
MWSF will be a huge let down even worst than the MWNY 2001..
Here is what I expect
933
1.3
1.1 dual
All based on an Appolo
At last, a new case with two full size front bay (Quicksilver IS NOT a new case but just a slight design change)
DDR 266
ultra ata 100 or better
and a new kind of tranfer technology between the CPU and the motherboard
The GeForce 3 ti 500 as a built to order
I know that we have to be realistic but the cofigarations stated above are very depressing don't you think so guys?

LCD iMacs with G4 top model will have superdrive.867,933,1ghz
Powermacs in a new case and G5 processors. New case will have two optical drives. The new 10.2 disk burner has a disk copy function which is usless if there aren't two optical drives. 1.2,1.4,1.6ghz
Ti and iBooks to get speed bump, but nothing else.
I have no idea about prices.

I'm not gunna be overly optimistic, set for a letdown if so :) (worse/better possibilities)
I'd expect:
G4 867/933 (x6.5/x7.0)
G4 1.2ghz (x9.0)
DP G4 1064 (x8.0)
Everything gets bumped a good 200-300mhz, and I am happy :)
Let the G5's roll out in July. Frankly, July fits me best, as rev B's in Jan - I'll be in the market for a powermac then! Rev B G5 :) @ 2000mhz DP multicore all the shnitz! hehe (jk about multicore...)

PRESS RELEASE - 01/08/02
[quote]Apple Macintosh breaks the gigahertz barrier across the board with the introduction of a new class of powerful processors. Lead by the release of the Motorola G5 in it's PowerMac line starting at 1 GHz in the base model.
The new Macintosh drops the "i" and is simply called the "Mac", it features a design that morphs the iBook onto the back of the 15" Studio Display. Powered by the Motorola "Apollo" chip, also at 1 GHz.
In the portable line Apple has upped the iBook to a Ghz by using IBM's "Sahara" chip. The TiBook joins the GHz club with the same "Apollo" chip used in the new Mac.
In a stunning "One More Thing" Steve Jobs unveiled a new class of Apple device, the Mac Pad, a "Remote Desktop" Tablet like device that uses AirPort to communicate with, and control, any nearby AirPort equipped Macintosh. Using Gigawire, the next generation IEEE 1394 specification the includes wireless transmission over AirPort cards the Mac Pad is able to display anything the host macintosh can display including DVD movies and streaming content.<hr></blockquote>

ibook: Same until MWTO (then speed bump)
PB: same as ibook (then speed bump)
New Product: I really have no idea on this one. The Mac Tablet sounds cool.
Software:
Announce Photoshop for OSX progress and reason for delay (being threaded for MP?)
OSX: Sales, progress, "really happy about it", "we have listened to your feeback". Some lame demo stuff....
FCP3 Demo
iMovie updated possibly...but not iMovie 3...
So, most time spent of iMac and PMG5. I know some will say a G5 is wishful thinking...but seriously, folks....this is what Apple should be building. All the components are there....the motherboard, the drives, the RAM. They just need that G5 class PPC. There is no reason on the face of this earth that Apple shouldn't be building products like above. You may think those specs are nuts....but for what Apple charges that is what they should have in them. I would also be OK with Apollo G4's at 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4, with G3's in the iMacs except for the top model. But Apple needs better components and faster processors right now. I'm tired of making excuses. 1.4 or 1.6GHZ will put Apple REALLY CLOSE to AMD (I don't give a damn how fast that POS Pentium is!).
I won't buy unless G5's come out. One reason is that if not this MW, then definitely in July. These specs are totally possible, and they are what is needed to even be competitive...much less ground-breaking.

Power Macs
- No G5
- GHz-busting G4s in 933, and two other above-1GHz models
- Possible dual-processor option on one or all models?
- 256MB RAM in all models
- No hard drives less than 40GB
- SuperDrive on all models
iMac
- 800-900MHz G3
- 15" LCD (1024x768)
- Combo drive, at least as an option
- better video card than currently used
- 128 and 256MB RAM
- Will be like the iBook and have one processor speed and the line be differentiated by choice of optical drive
- No hard drives less than 40GB
- Glossy white enclosure...really cool-looking and SMALL. Smaller and thinner than anything predicted/mocked-up so far. It'll be a breath-taker. That'll be the "hook"...how small and thin it is. We'll be like "HOW in the hell did they fit all that crap in there?" because it'll look NOTHING like anything we've imagined. It'll be a small engineering marvel.
iBook
8x combo drive bump
Titanium PowerBook
No changes
AppleScript Studio
Or whatever it was called. That thing demonstrated back in July that you can build apps with and all and automate processes.
New iApp dealing with digital photography
What iMovie and iTunes are to digital video and music, this new iApp is a cool, easy-to-use, intuitive basic photo editor and nice little addition to the whole "digital hub" strategy. Removes red-eyes, crops, retouches, rotates, add type to photos, borders, etc. Consumer-level "fun" photo editing for all these new post-Christmas digital camera owners :)
Apple display price cuts
15" now $499, 17" now $799, 22" Cinema Display now $1999
"Oh yeah, one more thing..."
:)
I can't even imagine, but it'll be something totally out of left field, BUT something that we'll all go "of course! How come nobody's thought of that yet! AWESOME!". Some sort of non-Mac digital device, I'm sure. Beyond that, I have no clue.

The time has got to be close for a "Thin Client" of some sort... I think it is right that it will be disguised as a natural extention of an existing computer with a concept like "remote desktop"... This would be revolutionary and I would say "somewhat bitchin"!

1. Speed-bumped G4's, no big deal They will have to wait until March to announce G5's, thus no news here is good news. Otherwise if they makes a big deal about the G4's beyond the usual bake-off and "hooray we broke 1 GHz" it means the G5's will take until July.
2. New iMac. This is the new "revolutionary" product. LCD, possible expansion for FireWire drive/devices (i.e., the square hole for the square peg), and/or something I can't think of. Big, big deal.
3. New iPictures app. Think Image Capture meets the essentially defunct Adobe Photo Deluxe. Auto-detect and download of images from devices, upload to iTools Homepage, simple color correction, some trick effects/filters, and printer set-up (albums, framed images, etc.)
4. Preview of 10.2 (renamed to 10.5 possibly).

Is the latest Airport upgrade possibly a clue. What if the new product is some sort of cordless telephone that connects to airport either through the Ethernet, if connected over the broadband internet, or, a regular phone call when connected to the regular telephone line. If Apple wants to have a digital hub, starting with the telephone would be a good start.

I just don;t think they can afford to release the iMac with anything less than a combo CDRW/DVD drive. In this day and age, even on a basic machine, no one wants just a CD-ROM drive. I would have to believe all models would have a combo drive, and a superdrive could/should be a BTO option.

Some of you guys are just nog being realistic. Tarbash for example:
" iMac: (all standard with 15 inch LCD, FireWire2, USB, Gigabit ethernet, 32 MB GeForce2 MX, Aiport ready)
$999
867 MHz G4
128 MB RAM
40 GB
CD-RW
"
Ok, so you think Apple will introduce an iMac with a 867 Mhz G4 processor, 15 inch LCD and a geforce card for a bloody $999 (!>>!?!?) while the 867 is is selling as the top-end G4 now, WITHOUT a monitor, and costs $2,499?
dream on.
/\ldie
12-25-2001, 10:15 AM
Ok, now my predictions:
Hardware
New PowerMac G4
- 933 mhz, dual 1.33 Ghz, 1.1 Ghz
- 256, 512 MB RAM
- Superdrive in top 2 models
- same case
- same prices
New iMac G3
- 700 mhz, 867 mhz, 1 Ghz G3
- 15' flatpanel all models
- 128, 256 mb RAM
- DVD or CD-rw, combo in topmodel
- $999, $1299, $1499
- No new portables
- Price drop for the iPod. Probably -$50
- New iDevice like the iPod, mayby for video.
Software
- No preview of OS X 10.2
- iPhoto, a simple iTunes-like picture-editing app
- Maybe iMovie 3
- Demo of Photoshop X
thats it.

Nice predictions applenut. I'm willing to bet they are close except for the iMac speed maybe.
MWNY 00 ---> MWSF 01
500 MHz ---> 733 MHz
46.6 % increase in MHz
=
MWNY 01 ---> MWSF 02
867 * 1.466 ---> 1271.02
MWSF 01 ---> MWNY 01
733 MHz ---> 867 MHz
18.144611187 % increase in MHz
=
MWNY 01 ---> MWSF 02
867 * 1.18145 ---> 1024.313779
Give or take, 1.4 isn't quite the huge leap if we look at it. It's possible. If we get a similar leap in theoretical top clock speed as MWSF this year, we're past 1.2 GHz.
Tarbash
12-25-2001, 11:52 AM
Yeah, well back in January the 733 G4 tower was the top of the line at $3499. 6 months later it was priced at $1699.
Times and technology change, and with G5s on the horizon, G4s will no doubt become less expensive, and 867 MHz will be considered VERY low end.
So many people are stuck in the mindset that Apple will adavance CPU speed at the same slow pace that it has in the past, but we are in for a pretty bug leap I think.
TigerWoods99
12-25-2001, 11:58 AM
Exactly. So by my formula the first speed could be top end and second bottom end, give or take.
Just release those G5s at slightly lower clock speeds. They'll still smack the Apollo.

Apple MUST get away from the Dual's only on the high-end machine, especially with OSX becoming more mainstream.
The 466, 533, 667 and 733 lineup with the dual 533 in there was the best Powermac lineup Apple ever had in my opinion.

Here is a summary of what a CompUSA person told me would occur at the upcoming MWSF:
Less speculative:
1. G5 towers
2. G4, flat panel imacs
3. Dual 800 towers no longer available through stores like CompUSA
4. AMD manufacturer of G5 chip
More speculative:
1. G5 towers to 1.6 GHz
2. G5 laptop
This is the same guy who told me a couple of months ago about flat panel imacs.
I asked him how he knew about this sensitive info. He stated that they see Apple reps all the time, and they pump each one for info. It only takes a single "weak link" to "spill the beans".
Personally, I'm curious to see if he really does have some inside info.

Why would a low end PowerMac get a GeForce 2 MX while the iMac gets a GeForce 3? sorry, but no way on those graphics cards.

One thing we must realize is that Steve will put out the fastest chips possible. He knows that Apple screwed up the last MacWorld and that they must come in with some major announcements. The cases for the PM and the imac are still quite functional, but are dated compared to the rest of the line. The imac will be as amazing as you are expecting. A very small footprint and a very clean, polished look. The PM case should finally be all new to go along with the G5. Expect as considerable of a shrink in size as possible, while keeping the same expandability. The motherboard on QuickSilver is considerably smaller than the model it replaced as one can plainly see. QuickSilver was obviously a last minute back-up plan that only got some of what is coming in the true next-gen product that we will see at MacWorld. The speeds of the chips can in no way be judged by any rational means without info from IBM, MOT or Apple. However, some very revealing generalizations can be extracted from the persona of Steve Jobs. The alleged quote regarding his anger as he stepped off stage from MacWorld NY, in addition to his performance and mood on stage. And his recent quote regarding this MacWorld being the most exciting ever. There have been rumors of Apple perhaps shipping G5 machines at well over a Ghz. I don’t see this in any way to be overly optimistic when one considers that Apple has reportedly had a hand in developing it.

What will Steve Jobs reveal at MWSF 2002?
In my view, guesses should be justified in some way, otherwise how do they differ from the prognostic ranting of schizophrenics? On the other hand, I'm perplexed by those posters who do justify their predictions, but in an unrealistic way, by saying things like "Based on how long the G4 has been out, a G5 MUST appear," or "Apple MUST release a Power Mac faster than 1 GHz; otherwise they are ruined," or "Why does Apple hold back? Why don't they just release a Mac at 1 GHz? They must." But what if there is no over-1 GHz CPU available for Apple to use, or there is one but it dissipates 100 Watts, or costs $1,000? Apple can only sell what Motorola and IBM provide. Either there is no suitable faster-than-867 MHz chip for Apple to use (then they surely can't release a computer with one inside), or there IS such a chip (in which case you can be sure that they will use it). Some posters are requiring Apple to do the impossible, and for reasons that Apple as a successful business entity surely does not follow.
I have my own list of guesses as to what will be revealed in MWSF 2002, but I also give here my justifications for my educated guesses (or at least I give a URL to the place where a degree of justification will be found). First the guesses.
-iMac
7460-G4 (Apollo)
1.0 - 1.2 GHz
15-in. flat panel display, 266 DDR memory bus
-iBook
750fx-G3 (Sahara)
1.0 GHz
no other change
-PowerBook
7460-G4 (Apollo)
1.0 GHz
266 DDR memory bus
-Professional-Desktop
8500-G5
1.2 GHz, 1.4 GHz, 1.6 GHz, dual 1.0 GHz, quad 1.0 GHz
All prof. desktop models --
(a.) 400-MHz (100x4) QDR front-side bus,
(b.) "Gigawire", which is either RapidIO (for connecting multiple CPUs), or 1600 MHz fibre-optic FireWire,
(c.) FireWire 2,
(d.) USB 2,
(e.) Bluetouth
-Prof-Desktop CONCEPT DEMO ("model coming later")
8500-G5
quad 2.8 GHz
Should reach equiv. SPEC2000 of 7600 (11 times a 2-GHz P4)
-Rack-mount server-Mac, U1 or U2 size
8500-G5
multi 0.8 GHz
(a.) Headless, no video,
(b.) Controlled via AirPort and rlogin by an iBook,
(c.) RapidIO backplane for up to 32 CPU-cards in 1 box, big powersupply, big fan,
(d.) Cheap but powerful, an Itanium killer.
The principle followed in my guesses:
I have no "inside information", but Apple will use in 2002 starting in January or February, whichever advanced PPC CPUs are available in sufficient quantities and whichever are suitable, given the constraints of price and heat-dissipation, for a given model. So what one needs to know in order to make an informed guess, is what PPC chips will be available in Jan. 2002 for Apple to choose from; here my chart (URL below) is serviceable. This chart was the basis for my choice of Apollo, Sahara, and G5 in Apple's January 2002 machines -- "Intel Designs vs the PowerPC Family":
<a href="http://www.bayarea.net/~kins/AboutMe/CPUs.html" target="_blank">http://www.bayarea.net/~kins/AboutMe/CPUs.html</a>
Quad 2.8-GHz G5:
Regarding the seemingly fantastical idea of a quad 2.8-GHz G5 demo-model being possible today, consider this: apparently a very small percentage of chips on Motorola's G5 wafers test good at 2.8 GHz; why not use them for something, even when the mem bus and other system components would not to able to show off the quad-G5 setup to its best advantage, and the insufficient yields prohibit their being the basis of a product at this time?

As the resident pessimist here, here's my final prediction - and something to watch for:
I expect fast Apollo G4s in the Power Macs simply because the G5s were not finalized in time to design, test and produce a new system. What I'm going to be looking at is the case. If it's a whole new design, don't expect the G5s until MWNY. If, however, it's a modified Quicksilver case, then I would look for the G5s around April.
As for the G5s, here's AtAT's latest word posted on 12/28:
"Sorry, folks; the bad news is that we now have incontrovertible proof that the Power Mac G5 will not debut a week from Monday at the Macworld Expo super-special day-early Stevenote. "
[ 12-29-2001: Message edited by: gfeier ]</p>
POWERMACS:
866 Mhz G4
1.133 Ghz G4
dual 1.0 Ghz G4
lowend is the current G4 processor and mobo. The others are Apollo's + ddr ram.
FLAT PANEL WIDE SCREEN IMAC:
733 Mhz G4/ 128MB/ CD-RW / 15.2" / GEFORCE2MX
733 Mhz G4/ 256MB/ COMBO / 15.2" / GEFORCE2MX
733 MHZ G4/ 256MB/ SUPERDRIVE / 15.2"/ GEFORCE2MX
all white 'snow'ish color
IPHOTO:
photo software similar to ACDSEE + Iview multimedia, just more simple.
FIRMWAREUPGRADE TO IPOD:
the ability to store photos and video from digital camera's and dv-camera's with firewire.
thats it.

Yeah but you read that wrong just as I did. Their incontrovertible proof was that Apple was already selling G5s thanks to a typo:

This comes up all the time, and the lesson never seems to sink in. Apple marketing, like all other marketing departments in the world doesn't advertise events as, "OK, but nothing too important." They ALWAYs say, "You won't want to miss it!" It means nothing. They are not making hints, prophesies, ranking the importance of the announcements or anything else that you can take as being more or less important than any other press release. It's a keynote, it gets hyped. Don't take too much on faith.

Generally agree with you about the keynote gets hyped, but...
A foundational aspect of Marketing is credibility. The best marketers understand this in their very fabric.
Words are chosen very carefully, meaning, their is a reason why the word breakthrough is chosen vs. the word revolutionary.

Yes keynotes get hyped, but rarely are they bumped up a day (forcing all attendees to reschedule their plans) and increased in length to 2.5 hours. If Steve doesn't have some cool toys to talk about at length then he is going to be standing in front of a bored, disappointed, and pissed off audience... which is what happened to him at MWNY and he wasn't happy about that at all! So for him to do this means he feels that he's got something to show off.
I had a dream last night, so it is no doubt wishful thinking but who knows maybe its a prophecy:
- Low-end iMac, current CRT design, 800-900 MHz G3, geForce2 MX, GigaWire (=1394b), USB2, 133MHz SDRAM, $799.
- 3 iMac models w/ new LCD design. One piece unit of stunning design and small proportions. "I can't believe that's a whole computer" kind of reaction. Apollo G4s in all of them, ranging from 800-900 MHz to low GHz. 133MHz SDRAM, geForce2 MX, GigaWire, USB2. SuperDrives all around. Prices same as current iMac models.
- iBooks get speed bump to 800-900 MHz.
- Titanium now available in 2 models, the current one and a new faster one which uses Apollo G4 and speed bumps 100-200 MHz.
- Low-end PowerMac with fast Apollo G4 (low GHz), large L3 cache, 266 MHz DDR memory (>128 MB of it), AGP 4x, geForce2 MX, GigaWire, USB2, SuperDrive. Priced as current low-end model. Case is same as current one.
- Other PowerMac models have 4 slots that can hold one G5 each. There are 3 pre-determined configurations (which saves you a bit of money and means you can walk out of the store with it), but AppleStores & online can do a build-to-order thing. Available G5 speeds are from 1.0 - 2.0 GHz (with pricing getting to insane levels at the high end, along with long delivery times). G5's performance at a given clock rate is double that of the G4 on the same code, triple if its recompiled for the G5. It is a 64-bit chip, but will run in 32-bit mode until MacOS X 10.2 arrives this summer. HyperTransport connections to the DDR memory controller which can use either 266 MHz DDr or 333 MHz DDR memory (must all be of same type, however). AGP 8x, geForce3 or 4, GigaWire, USB2, SuperDrive. Case design is beautiful, functional, and innovative. Rack-mount case will be available. Pricing starts at around mid-range PowerMac levels and goes WAY up from there.
Okay, the last one isn't going to happen... but we can probably safely say its not going to be better than that. Its important to establish where the limits are. :)

I think that the G5 and G4 iMac are @ least possible with the G4 iMacs having a better chance of happeneing then G5 PMs... Also os has to be updated to take advantage of new hardware, no major update is what you mean i think....
My NEW predictions:
PM: new case (w/max ram of 4gig and 2nd 5.25 bay) except low end (old case)
1064 g5 same as current mid-range (old bus, ram, and cache and everything like that) only no superdrive, cdrw $1599 NO SUPERDRIVE OPTION, just CDRW and combo upgrade
1.2 g5 new bus and ddrram 256, usb2?, fw 2 (aka gigawire), 80gig , superdrive, geforce3 $2299
1.4 g5 same as above w/100 gig superdrive 2? and 512 ram, GeForce 3 $2799
1.2 dual g5 same as above ATI Radeon 8500 $3499
new speakers??/built-in sound? 5.1 surround possible w/BTO?
iMac:
After readting pscate's thread, i have decided that it is possible that the iMac will be in a cube or non all in one form factor, but the low end will still be the same: CRT $799. If cube's form factor, it may drive the price up $150 each when bundled with the 15" display. $100 if not cube. You can do the price changes in your head, im not going to change each one b/c I still think an all in one iMac is possible.
867G4, 133 bus, Ti book screen across the line, slot-load?? (FW2, USB2?)
except low end: 800G4 40gig 128 ram, Crt Cdrom current form factor 16mb rage128, $799
CDRW-40gig, 128, 16mb rage128-$999
CDRW-40gig, 256, 16or32mb geforce2mx- $1299
Combo(8x)-60gig, 256, 16or32mb geforce2mx- $1499
SUPERDRIVE-60gig, 256, 16or32mb geforce2mx- $1799
Displays:
15-$499
17-$899
17widescreen-$1099 OR 19-$1199
22widescreen-$2199
perm promo-$100 bundle rebate with PM except w/15", $300 with 22widscreen model
iBook: only one change, combo drive updated to 8x (possible if no g5 or g4 iMac, if either are updated, this probably wont happen)
PB: no change
OS: 9.2.3 for new hardware, no new features.
10.1.3(5?) for new hardware, SLF??, other goodies, and new software below.
One more thing: iPhoto or iOrganize both?
iPhoto: what everyone has been saying, import images, export to iTools/iDisk, albums, crop, rotate, red-eye, etc.
iOrganize: Replaces palm software, contacts,(import from entourage/mail.app) etc. palm conduit, also organizes media-movies, pics, tunes, etc.

Oh, and "One more thing (tm)"
Not a clue what it could be.
A 1 GHZ+ Powermac is NOT a big deal. A G5 WOULD be.
An iMac with LCD screen will look slick as a babies behind but it is NOT a big deal.
What is being hyped here?
I am being purposely conservative on my hardware predictions. If the event exceeds these, I will be a happy camper.
I WILL NOT OVER ANTICIPATE!
:)
Oh, and NO iBook or Powerbook announcements.
NO tablets.
NO PDA's!
Sorry guys, ain't going to happen.

<a href="http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/news/2001/1017_750fx.html" target="_blank">http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/news/2001/1017_750fx.html</A>
That's why I think the iMac will be closer to 700Mhz, maybe 800Mhz if the 750cxe goes up that high. Sahara will be great for the iBook later in 2002, because it's even smaller and less-power consuming than the current G3.
They won't use a G4 in the iMac because of cost - the G3 chip is still much cheaper, and with LCD screens, they have to cut costs somewhere or the thing is going to be over $2000.
Remember, the current high-end iMac is $1499, with just a CRT monitor, just a CDRW drive, and just a 700Mhz processor. No way they can add that slot-loading combo drive from the TiBook, an LCD screen, AND a G4, and keep their margins.

well now that we are a week away about i will lay my predictions on the line. i will be somewhat fague on since it seems no one knows the whole truth:
OS X will lead off keynote. minor upgrade possibly. #s of users... blah blah blah...update on aps that are native or will be updated between MWSF and MWNY...blah blah blah
re-cap of apple apps. mayabe we will finally see iPhoto.
begin hardware intro:
I honestly believe we will finally learn what GigaWire is and how Apple has begun to intergrate it into their products- this may also lead us to a new consumer based product (a la iPod)
into pro hardware:
PowerBook- nothing. just a recap of the recent std combo drive message
we will then see upgraded PowerMacs that will break the GHz mark finally! but if they are G4 or G5 is to be seen. either seems to be a possiblity right now. some reports say that Mot has the PowerPC 8500 chip and it is running at decent speeds, but I do not think the use of the G4 chip will end at 867MHz for Apple. If they do have G5 processors I do expect the case/form factor will change also. Don't foget the Photoshop 7 bake off...
now consumer hardware:
iBook- most likely nothing. but we can always hope for a speed bump to 700, a color other than white, and better graphics
and "one last thing":
we will see flat panel iMacs. they have dropped CRT from the monitor line and it is now time to say goodbye to it in the product line. what speeds these machines will run at is a mystery. here is my concern- IBMs processor roadmap has the 750CXe only going to 700MHz, the current iMac maximum. IBM had just announced 750FX (700MHz - 1.0GHz) in October, with samples of these chips going out in January 02- so either IBM will pull a fast one and they are further along with their chips or ???, this scenario i think leaves the door open for a G4 based iMac. This new iMac will also give us more light on what Steve's idea of the "digital hub" is....

That's what i know.
No new PowerMac for now, but a G5 in february (which will be demoed)
iBook and iMac will be updated with new G3 processors, but the iMac higher end models won't be available soon (you know that Qanta is said to start production this month and IBM is going to start it's 750FX production this month too)
The iBook will get only updated processors, while the iMac will be totally updated (133Mhz system bus, GeForce 2MX, HD up to 80GB, lcd screen)
The PowerBook will get an Apollo: the 550 model it's going to disappear and will be replaced by the 667Mhz; a new 867 Mhz will be the high end.
As i said, no new powermac shipping in january, but a G5 will ship in february.
See you next week. ;)

This is my run of the Keynote. After the usual comments about iPod sales, iBook sales, and the feature bump on the powerbooks, His Steveness discusses the history of the iMac and its need for an evolution:
iMac II
1ghz G4 Apollo
133 mhz bus
256 MB Ram
Geforce 2 (integrated)
15.1 LCD
Improved sound system (5.1 & built in Sub?)
DVD, Combo, Superdrive
Then His Steveness Discusses some new software to be bundled with the iMac II
OS X 10.2
Appleworks 7 (rebranded?)
iMovie 3
iPicture
Quicktime 6 and Mpeg 4
He demos an expanded iDisk, iTools, iCards, iPhotos, iDream, iTunes, etc.
Then...Steve sets the tone by
pausing...
pausing...
pausing...
and then in the most serious and chilling tone states that it is now time to "unleash the hounds".
"We've got some news for the industry...Think... Powerful!"
Powermac G5
1.2, 1.6, 1.4 Dual 64 bit
256, 512, 1 GB DDR Ram
Geforce 3 Stock
Combo, Superdrive, Superdrive
"and one more thing...OS X Server has found a new home"
Powermac G5 Rack Server
1.4 Dual 64 bit
2 GB DDR Ram
"The hub that keeps your world turning"
(no iBook or Powerbook updates, though perhaps a drop in price on the iPod)

Powermac G5
1.0, 1.2, 1.4, dual 1.2
Same case, new color scheme, maybe some minor changes.
DDR RAM, fast bus (not 400 MHz, but fast).
LCD iMac
G4, 933, 1.066, 1.133
133 MHz bus
Lame-ass video card.
Display choice:
Display will "snap" on, connected to an ADC port+swivel arrangement. Two different sized LCD displays will be available.
This also is key, because as LCD prices drop, Apple can quickly update the screen size of the iMac with little development cost.
No changes to laptop lines.
Some new product, but I've got no idea what.
Not a PDA or a Newton II.
Not an iPhone.
Not a pager.
Not a camera.
New iPhoto.

I think the G5 would sport a totaly new case to seperate it from the G4's and QS's. Not to mention the compliants about the QS case and that it's ugly.
No, a totaly new Titanium/Metal case for the G5. It burns and toasts Pentium/Athlons so it needs to be metal :)

OK, my own thoughts on what may be coming, and how.
I'm not really bothered by any updated/new iMac, I'm sure it will be gorgeous and impressive, but I want maximum processing power, and already have several displays. There may be new digital devices, but I would just be guessing wildly.
PowerMacs: I believe the G5 will debut, in a new case. The new case is, I suspect, a necessity, because the G5 will generate a lot of heat, it is fast and massive, and will readily scale to 4 processor boxes, and might be able to go higher. That also means a new power supply in the box.
Together with recent improvements in emulation techniques, it may be possible for Steve to do a photoshop bake-off showing the new machine beating a 2GHz P4 beast, and then say that it was running windows photoshop under emulation, natively it blows it away. This may be a dual processor machine, as I suspect one processor translating, one executing, could lead to huge speed improvements in emulation.
New on the display front, a choice of a detachable display, which works as a normal display when connected to the computer, but switches to an airport link when detached. When detached, the display will be suitable for general purpose programmes, web surfing etc., but will not be able to do games, full-screen video and such like. The screen will also be a touch-screen for input, with handwriting recognition and gestures, but also a wireless keyboard for more serious work.
Possibly, the screen can act as a very basic computer when completely isolated from the main computer, but is not, of itself, a PDA. The screen is optional becaused it will add considerably to the cost, but I have always wanted to be able to sit confortably in an armchair and use a powerful computer, so I would pay for it.

iWalk notwithstanding, I predict HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT! on nearly every hardware front. Perhaps some significant iApps will appear, but in general people will be let down by expectations of Apple's own creation. This time they did it, not us. Rumors were actually relatively sedate until a few days ago. And it's gonna hurt them, and their stock. If they don't impress, really impress, to the level of all but the most rabid optimists, count the show a failure.

Apple itself has inflated expectations by an order of magnitude; as you state, only Apple is to blame if the company fails to deliver. However, I remain optimistic, for the key reason that the reference points we have suggest that Apple will deliver. As another pointed out, Apple has generated similar hype only at key product introductions. Whatever Apple has for us, the company believes that this is a major event, one set apart from most every other keynote. It has to be big. Of course, on the other hand, Apple hasn't always been on the ball with its product intros: BD and FP iMacs, overpriced Cubes, lack of CD-RW options for an extended period are the major ones to come to mind. Nevertheless, Apple's betting it has something great, and I don't want to bet against SJ. . .

I wish people wouldn't be so eager to seal themselves inside a casket before the product is even announced. If Apple comes through with 1.6GHz machines, I doubt anyone will give too much of a sh*t what comes after the "G." Keep it in that perspective. It's all about how fast they can get - and at this point it's totally a wildcard.
-S
No G5 this time, G4 Apollo up to 1GHz (but not much faster), LCD iMacs with only slightly faster G3s. The i and PowerBooks are not touched, maybe for Tokyo.
New iApp and some new iDevice and probably the all new "extended Digital Hub strategy" (whatever that is ;) ).

I think this is especially appropriate if we get a new mobo that can drive the processors to their limits, i.e. ddr ram, ata-100 or > etc. I for one would be very happy with multicore G4's and new mobo technologies.

Barring any unforseen photo leaks that are actually credible (unlike iWalk), I would say this is what we're most likely to see:
New LCD iMac, perhaps using Apollo
733, 800, 867 MHz
More Quicksilver Power Macs
800, 933 and 1GHz
Maybe new Radeon cards standard
Maybe all with Super Drive
(since they still can't get their shit together)
Speedbumped TiBooks
Demo of OS X v10.2, possibly with release date / time-frame.

For starters, the IBM PowerPC 750 FX, aka Sahara, has 5 stages.
It's larger L2 cache, wider internal bus, faster front side bus and additional registers are said to provide a 25% boost in performance over other G3 chips.
I wouldn't expect it to "blow" past the G4s though, even for non altivec jobs. The PowerPCs may have 2 additional instruction pipeline stages (7 vs 5), but the G4s (in the form of the 7450) also have additional Int and Altivec units. The G4's already had a better FP unit, etc. I would expect a little more parity in performance than anything else for non-altivec tasks.

Looks like a bunch of us were off on the iMac (I personally predicted a Saraha G3). We'll see about the rest. ;)
