Hmm, I couldn't seem to find that info anywhere... the spec sheet still have DVD & CD-RW models seperate, and I can't see it at the Store... must be having a bad morning. :D

Anyway, that's GREAT that they have a 8x burning speed in that combo. This just CONFIRMS ( ;) ) that Apple has the best damn laptop on the planet.

Too bad they had to increase the price ($200 CDN for me) - but hey, a combo drive with 8x burn speed? Worth it.

No wonder my dealer was trying to give me such a deal on a 667/48/CD-RW last week...

Hey, its wasn't long ago that the PowerBooks were shipping with Rage 128 Mobility chips w/ 8MB of VRAM.

The new machines are awesome, but still not enough of a difference to justify upgrading from my Ti 500...

Also notice that AirPort cards are no longer standard in the Tis... I guess the additional AirPort card cost has been folded into the new optical drives.

The bottom-level PowerBook is a steal. Well, a great deal anyway. Yummy, Combo Drive and G4 in a portable...

Anywhoo, I like this. Now, if Apple upgrades the iBook BEFORE January, there'll be plenty of space in people's heads for the new G5. Less flashy stuff taking up space in people's consciousness.

Although full details are not available, qualifying users will be able to upgrade their CD-RW or DVD-ROM Titanium to a combo drive for US$299 in mid-January. More details on where the service can be done will be posted to Apple's Web site when it becomes available."

Is it just me, or on these new TiBooks, Apple is not totally ripping us off on RAM prices. To get a Gig of ram in it, all one would need to do is put in another 512MB chip. Those things are around $200 anyway, so for once Apple's is not a total rip off.

This isn't to say that Apple's is no more expensive, but for once it seems as if one could get a Gig of ram for only around $150 more than it should be. And this RAM is at least Apple certified...

(this was very poorly written. I wonder what that's all about. Our brains are weird things.)

As it turns out, when you buy the 512MB model both slots are filled (256MB each). In order to upgrade this to 1GB you must buy two 512MB modules. I don't know how much your used 256MB modules would sell for on eBay. :-)

One can get two lifetime warranty "Crucial" 512MB modules for ~$133 each <a href="http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/prdtinfo.asp?prdt=MECT512P3S2" target="_blank">here</a>, which comes to about $266 for 1GB.

I don't like my work space being too confined. I'd rather have everything be smaller and have more space to put Photoshop windows. Furthermore, I'd like to have the option to use a higher resolution if I need it. I just find the current resolution to be insufficient for FCP, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Let's not forget that equivilent PC offerings have much higher resolutions, and Samsung makes a higher res screen with the Ti dimensions.

So what about us Ti 400/500 users? Now don't get me wrong, I won't be upset if I can't upgrade, but it would sure be nice. I don't know if it'd be $300 nice, but it'd nice nonetheless.

I read somewhere that the Ti PB 400 and 500 are not upgradeable to the combo drive because it actually doesn't fit. They changed the drive opening slightly in the 550/667.
