Gah Memory for the Dual 2 gig questions

ok so I a guy sold me this memory to try thats DDR 400 3200 Jedec and all that. And I put it in and booted up, noticeable different worked for about 20 mins and kernal crash. Same thing after rebooting so i know its the memory.

Now I sent it off back to him and said something was wrong with it. One question is did I buy the right thing? I bought 2 one gig dimms DDR 400 3200 jedec, nothing fancy not crucial or anything so I was just curious. The manual said that if you install say one gig that you must use 2 512 Mbit technology devices... I took this as to say you must install 2 512 DIMMS is that correct? I think I bought the right kind and I did the hardware test but couldn't wait as I don't have breathing time here at the office as is. And everything turned on ok, I even tried putting it in other slots as well still to no avail I'd work and it'd crash. Anyways... the boss man wants me to find some more 2 gigs so 2x1gigDIMMS, under 400$!! I guess he'll ahve to pay more. Anyways if you all could refer me to a place you've bought RAM before for fairly cheap, I'd really appreciate it as I am in a bind grrr as usual. I checked out pricewatch, and 1800memory ( I believe?) they gave me mixed results.

Does the RAM have to be dual channel?

Well, I know a guy who has 8GB in his dual G5, and it's working fine, so I guess that it is indeed acceptable to use 1GB modules.

As for the rest, I have no idea. Check the specs. Remember that if just one of the RAM chips is bad, neither will work. As RAM gets faster and as the tolerances get smaller, bargain RAM just doesn't cut it. You're shooting yourself in the foot by buying bargain RAM.

The RAM itself is not dual channel. The interface between the system and memory is.

You generally can't go wrong with the premium brands like the Corsair XMS, Kingston HyperX, and GeiL sticks. If you want to shop at a more Mac specific place, I haven't had any problems with OWC/macsales.com (but that's a point of contention in here I guess.)

Or you could just stick to Crucial...

eh i think i'm going to just get 4 512 meg dimms from crucial and maybe 1 1/2 to 2 years from now I'll get 2 1 gig dimms later down the line.

I'm on my 4th RAM purchase and none seem to work. All were 512MB sticks. I think now that the "2x512 technology devices" refers to the number of chips on each stick of RAM. (My Bro bought 1GB of RAM that works fine and that i the only difference I can think of) My last try will only be a 512MB stick with 2 chips on it.
