Movie one, probably the Passion/Last Temptation of Christ (Peter Gabriel) or (Klaus Badelt: ) Pirates (http://giaguara.diaryland.com/080.html) of the Caribbean or (Clint Mansell: ) Requiem for a Dream.. both soundtracks are great. No Soundtrack (that software) though .. poor me. :(

Favourite song from a soundtrack, or score cue?

Conan the Barbarian (Basil Poledouris) is a fun listen, and I've always been a fan of Elliot Goldenthal's unsettling Alien3 score (one of the film's redeeming features).

I didn't enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack at all — too much generic Badelt/Gregson-Williams/Powell/Zimmer bombast.

Currently (and currently listening to) "Chateau" from Rob Dougan (Matrix Reloaded). It's from the scene where Neo fights off the Merovingian's henchman in the castle... very cool track.

I can see a bit of Zimmer in Badelt since the latter has worked under the former, but I saw no shades of Gregson-Williams and Powell in Pirates. And I hardly find any of them 'bombastic' ... see Chicken Run score.

It's more likely the fault of the typical action flicks that Zimmer is contracted to do work for rather than his own. All that worldly tribal stuff he's done in the past is hardly generic... I don't really like that sort of music though...

As for my own favorite, I don't have one in particular. I like several tracks on each of the following compositions:

Don't take my comment the wrong way; I appreciate of lot the work put out by the Media Ventures crew. Chicken Run, as you noted, was delightful, and I liked Powell's work on The Bourne Identity as well. I look forward to see what newcomer Badelt will contribute.

The Pirates of the Caribbean score just reminded me of a particular sort of synth-heavy action score that Zimmer and associates sometimes produce — think The Rock.

Goldsmith's scores are great, especially those from the 70's.

I love his Star Trek—The Motion Picture work to death (although its main theme has been way overplayed by now).

Alien and Total Recall are excellent as well.

Alien3 by Elliot Goldenthal: All time favorite. GREAT music on all levels! (but the movie sucked)
oh yeah, Alien and Aliens soundtracks are good too...
8mm by Mychael Danna. not as good as A3 but still nice. different.
the first Poltergeist by Jerry Goldsmith is also excellent

ah...gotta stop. could go on now

However, LOTR soundtracks works great in the movie but is mediocre when heard alone. Not bad at all, but just very standard stuff imo.

Let's not neglect the late, great Bernard Herrmann, who composed many wonderful scores outside his better-known collaborations with Hitchcock.

His overture to Vertigo is mesmerising.
