I've been amused at the nearly universal dismissal of Teresa Heinz Kerry by conservatives and Republicans. The rhetoric they use to describe her fits quite nicely with past Republican first ladies, so what gives?

Nancy Reagan: Opinionated. Cold. Calculated. An advisor to Reagan behind closed doors. SHE IS HERALDED AS A NATIONAL TREASURE!

Barbara Bush: Opinionated. Loud. Domineering. Speaks her mind. SHE IS ONE OF THE GOP'S ALL-TIME FAVORITE FIRST LADIES!

Hillary Rodham Clinton: Opinionated. Cold. Calculated. An advisor to Clinton behind closed doors. DESPISED AND CONTINUOUSLY CUT DOWN BY THE CONSERVATIVE PRESS FOR BEING AMBITIOUS. UNIVERSALLY DESPISED AND HATED BY REPUBLICANS.

Laura Bush: Quiet. Soft spoken. Mousy. AS A GOOD FIRST LADY SHOULD BE!

Teresa Heinz Kerry: Opinionated. Foreigner. Former Republican. An advisor to Kerry behind closed doors. COMMUNIST! HEIRESS! LOUD! SHRILL AND UNACCEPTABLE.

So what gives with the double standard?

As long, as this type of communication will have a positive impact on votes, it will continue.
If people and therefore potential elector are pissed by this type of behavioring, it will stop.
