Hi,
It seems that a new Apple patent arrives just hours before the keynote:
On MacRumors:
Dual Swingarm iMac G5?

Rhapso.

Hmm, maybe diversionary tactics :???: can't see the use of a "Dual swing arm" when one sufficed in the original design.
Remember, you can pick the (current G4) iMac up by the arm so it is strong enough to hold almost any size of display.

The Macrumors forum site is overloaded. But you can see the image on the patent site here:
http://patimg2.uspto.gov/.piw?Docid=D0494971&homeurl=http%3A%2F%2Fpatft.uspto.gov%2Fnetacgi%2Fn ph-Parser%3FSect1%3DPTO2%2526Sect2%3DHITOFF%2526p%3D1 %2526u%3D%2Fnetahtml%2Fsearch-bool.html%2526r%3D3%2526f%3DG%2526l%3D50%2526co1%3 DAND%2526d%3Dptxt%2526s1%3Dapple.ASNM.%2526OS%3DAN %2Fapple%2526RS%3DAN%2Fapple&PageNum=&Rtype=&SectionNum=&idkey=7EE55F4257E3
Very doubtful. A fuller report here (http://www.macobserver.com/columns/devilsadvocate/2004/20030826.shtml) explains that it is part of a patent originally filled in November 2001 - making it just one of the options for the iMac 2.

That story was posted by MacObserver a week ago I believe. When filing patents the filer will sometimes disquise the product a bit when a drawing is provided. Not unusual. It's ugly in my opinon. Who wants all those angles. You could hurt yourself! I doubt there will be a pyramid iMac this time, although if they ever made one it would probably last forever - pyramid power and all that. :wow:
By the way I think it is possible that the iMac G5 will be more like the current one with a floating screen and separate CPU rather then the rumored CPU behind the screen. But by tomorrow at 5:00 AM EDT (give an hour for the preliminaries) we'll know for sure.

The secret is the new "ball joint" connecting to the LCD.
This "ball joint" looks like it could rotate to portrait view.
The two arms are a diversionary tactic.

The patent is for the arm. Why do people assume that the pyramid bit is the new case? It's not part of the patent, so why would the real base be there?

:\ This "new" ball joint looks like it wouldn't offer any significant advantages over the current design. The G4 iMacs display can swivel quite well to accommodate most viewing angles.
Probably an old design for the current offering.

I agree with you about the base.
I believe the real interesting arm part is the "ball joint", not the double arms.
Looks like it could rotate to portrait mode compared to the old design.
i'm not so sure. wasn't one of the contributing factors of the high price of the imac2 the complicated arm design? and the supposedly cheaper new imac is going to have an even more complicated arm construction?
imho apple just patented this as one of the designs they worked on for the previous imac.

Exactly! Apple ain't gonna redesign that arm again. Old technology. We need a new form.
