Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld cast it a little differently this week, at a news conference in Missouri. Iraq is making progress, he said. “At some point the Iraqis will get tired of getting killed and we'll have enough of the Iraqi security forces that they can take over responsibility for governing that country,” he said.

Another hard to believe statement from the Bush Admin. That's your Secretary of Defense right there people. From Media Availability at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo, Tuesday 14th September, 2004.

Even if that callous, idiotic statement got the press it deserved I doubt it would cause much of a reaction in our dumbed down society. Are we, unfortunately, proving the "You get the Government you deserve" saying, right?

Don't you think that would happen though?

And what, pray, are we supposed to do?

We didn't vote for Bush and cronies last time, nor will we this time.

Yet it seems that nothing short of a violent coup will satisfy you. What are you doing about it?

Don't you think that would happen though? Unfortunately, so far there's zero evidence that any Iraqis will stand and fight alongside US troops, before or after the "handover". Their track record makes "Iraqization" seem like a desperate pipe dream more than an inevitability, at least as long as we're there.

The French and Russians thought the same thing... Algeria was lost as was Afghanistan.

Kind of a condescending thing to say don't ya think? First it assumes the American people are too stupid to see how well things are going (which may be more true than I like to think). Second, it assumes the Iraqi rebels are children who eventually tire of playing games... Think Isreal/Palastine conflict if you believe this to be a good path.

Who said anything about "along side"?

I guess you don't have a problem with Rummy basically telling us that we can be patient and wait until the Iraqis "get tired of getting killed".

Patience is quite a compromise when thousands die. Tens of thousands get wounded...American and Iraqi men, women and children.

drifting from forum to forum here, I can't believe the country can be reduced to a monolith of "insurgents". The north, from what I understand, is fine, which leaves the sunni and shia factions in play, either for or against a democracy.

Where is the analysis on that?
