Clothes police and tickets? In Europe? :\
"When she started wearing the burqa in public, Mayor Cristian Tolettini got an earful of complaints from local women who didn’t like the new style one bit and were not about to tolerate it."

As long as they police the Versace and D&G shows and ticket the style-impaired designers, sure.

Death to the Jews! - 1940s
Death to the Muslims! - 2000s
High time people stopped being narrow minded sheep who are easily brainwashed.
I recommend that people stop wearing clothes. That would be a true representation of our maturity as a civilization and it won't stress out people to see others wearing clothes different from their own. Welcome to 10000BC.
This is just as fucked up as the fact that you still get serrated knives made out steel in business class on an airplane; While the assholes at the airport are busy removing safety pins from your clothes and pretending that the world is a safer place.

While the town awaits a legal ruling, Italy’s President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi -- in a speech for the opening of the school year on Monday -- denounced those fomenting antagonism between cultures, although he made no reference to the dispute in Como.
In a plea for the release of the two women aid workers held hostage in Iraq, Ciampi said that Italians “reject this clash of civilizations” that the terrorists are trying to foment.
“Their plan is to drag humanity down into a conflict of civilizations and religions; such conflict does not exist, we don’t want it and we refuse it with all our might,” Ciampi said.
Stop sending workers to Iraq. Stop enforcing the plans of the neo-cons ("clash of civilizations") and stop blaming everything on terrorists. Stop electing aholes as political leaders.

No kidding. There are definitely paralells between the fascist movement of the 30's and 40's and the neocon movement of 2000.
Fortunately, we don't have an intelligent, charismatic leader to paralell Hitler. That's the only good thing about Bush. Thank God Cheney's more interested in money and Karl Rove is relegated to the background (and both are not charismatic enough to be in the foreground).

Which is why, presumably, we can mobilise to demonstrate without the security police showing up to interview us in our HOMES.
Which is why our dissident politicians can fly on aeroplanes without being searched.
You're the country that just abrogated its right to legal recourse during detention in the Patriot Act and you have the sauce to tell Europeans that they're somehow not as 'free' as America?
This weird Europe you hate so much. I'd love to visit it. Because where I live has absolutely no resemblence to the continent you've learned to despise so much.

aww, come on, you are so pathetic...
FYI, we are not killing homeless folks, like Hitler did...here in the us, they have the freedom to get a job at Wendy's and start living like normal people...
And back in the Hitler days, Jews didn't crach plans into buildings and cause thousands to die...that is they where killed for being successful in their business (us, [republicans] support small (and large) businesses) and that was a terrible death, much like of those who where in the world trade center at the time planes struck. The terrorists are the ones that follow hitler's ideologies...take for example that Hitler had ordered the mass murder of thousands on Jews...and keep in mind that he disagreed with their religion and way of life, and isn't that the reason why Bin Laden had ordered the mass murder of Americans that where on the planes and in the twin towers?

He didn't mix Hitler and Wendy's.

Nope. See, the fact that that theory makes no sense is the first indication that it's wrong. The goals are political.

But as far as their political goals are concerned they intend to establich a larger Islamistan in order to make a home for their 'values' as opposed to those of the West . . . . just check Fundy-islamic bullitin boards on line . . . . its hard not to run into that sentiment . . .

Yeah, and it's not hard to run into all sorts of forums filled with americans that believe Iraq was fought over WMD...opps, sorry, "democracy," but that doesn't mean they are right.
While no doubt islam plays a massive role and is foundation, cause and ultimate end of this political unity, the fundamental base of the whole thing is political. There is a political goal and there is a strategy being executed in order to reach that goal. The one major link between saddam's vision and osama's is the unified Arabia that finally breaks free of the cycle of exploitation and colonization. Saddam was in reality a far weaker political figure than bin laden (so much so that it's almost a joke to compare them in this regard), but it really shows that this Arab dream reaches even beyond islam.
To say that these groups attack us "because they hate our values" is just an attempt to make the enemy appear totally irrational and, thus, easier to hate. Unfortunately, misunderstanding them makes them harder to defeat, as seen in this administration's attack on Iraq, a move that played right into the image of the US terrorists are trying to spread to gain support: that of the western invaders that come time and time again to exploit the land, rape the women and humiliate the men. That's the fundamental image of the west that is so hated, and the ME's lack of development only adds to the widespread sense of defeat that now must be overcome.
IMO, this country really needs to wake the fck up and deal with this situation in a rational way before it blows up in our faces. Again.

I have to agree with scott here, particularly on this point. I don't know about Italy, but as far as france is concerned, if the country really wants muslims to integrate better with french society, there have got to be far more advanced ways of going about it.
