I was surfing across CSPAN (yeah, I'm a dork), and happened to tune into to a couple of statemen having a thoughtful debate about how to prosecute the the War on Terror. One man, in particular, struck me as remarkably well spoken. Here's a few quotes. Can you guess who is speaking? In dealing with terrorists, yes, we want to retaliate, but only if we can put our finger on the people responsible and not endanger the lives of innocent civilians there in the various communities and in the city of [city] where these terrorists are operating. I have just signed legislation to add to our ability to deal, along with our allies, with this terrorist problem, and it's going to take all the nations together...We are going to, as I say - we are busy trying to find the centers where these operations stem from and retaliation will be taken, but we are not going to simply kill some people to say, oh look, we got even. We want to know when we retaliate that we're retaliating with those who are responsible for the terrorist acts....we were succeeding to the point that the [nationality] Government had been organized, if you will remember there were the meetings in [city] in which they began to meet with the hostile factional forces and try to put together some kind of a peace plan. We were succeeding and that was why the terrorist acts began. There are forces there - and that includes Syria, in my mind - who don't want us to succeed, who don't want that kind of a peace with a dominant [nation], dominant over its own territory. And so the terrorist acts began...Place names have been hidden, but the last bit might be a giveaway, anyway. So be it. Who's the mystery speaker?

Reagan on Lebanon and the PLO, but then, look what a mess Lebanon is still in 20 years later, Still under Syria influence. Hardly a success by any standard...

Yup, that noted pacifist peacenik, Ronald Reagan, during the second Presidential Debate in 1984. It was pretty funny how Walter Mondale managed to sound downright hawkish, and made Reagan sound like a Republican's caricature of John Kerry, soft and sensitive and coddling of terrorists. Interesting, also, how Reagan tried to make it sound like the terrorists only started terrorizing because we were winning. Just a bunch of dead-enders.

As for staying the course, ask the Israelis how well their 20-year occupation of Lebanon went. Also note how many Lebanese terrorists have attacked American soil lately. Reagan appreciated that you don't make yourself safer by creating ten times more terrorists than you kill. I really appreciate Reagan. I wish the current administration would pay more attention to what he actually did in office, especially in his second term. Cutting spending, raising taxes to reduce the deficit, smart engagement abroad, etc.

Aside: Funny thing about Lebanon, it's been booming (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F50617F83C540C7A8CDDA00894DC4044 82) since 9/11, as rich Arabs who are afraid to vacation in the West go to Beruit instead.

The WOT is not about "retaliation". I would never use that word in a discussion of it.
