A British man, Moazzam Begg (detained without trial for two-and-a-half years) has written a letter from Guantanamo detailing his torture and claiming to have partially witnessed a murder which occurred there.
The thing is that all his previous letters were heavily censored but not this one. This suggests it was mistakenly let through and indeed my well show an accurate picture of what is going on at the US base.
Despite being held without trial - and no prospect of one - and being subjected to torture by the US military, Mr Begg's purpose of writing is to try to ascertain answers to some pertinent questions:
"Why was I physically abused and degradingly stripped by force, then paraded in front of several cameras toted by US personnel?"
"The reason for being held in Bagram detention facility (in Afghanistan) for a year and consequently being denied natural light and fresh food for the duration."
"The exact purpose of my incarceration in solitary confinement since 8 February 2003."
"Why all news pertaining to my situation is barred from me?'
This seems reasonable to me.
Even if the guy does turn out to be a terrorist (something that seems increasingly unlikely), surely none of these abuses can be justified.
In a very real way, the terrorists (whoever they are) have actually won - they have turned their enemies into themselves. They have changed previous western notions of justice and human rights from civilized rule of law to their own brand of barbarism.
That is conquest.
