problems witih 16x d2 DVD±RW Double Layer

I just got this drive a week ago. It can read disks just fine, but it does not seem to burn DVDs reliably. in the finder the progress bar will sometimes hang. Maybe i'm not waiting long enough, i don't know. if i try to burn a very small file onto a dvd it works just fine.

another problem is that toast will always hang when opening. i swapped my original combo drive back in, and toast starts up just fine.

system: g5 dual 2gig, 10.3.5

any advice would me much appreciated.

dvd's are finicky to begin with. a "new" technology like dual layered discs is especially finicky. its jsut part of being an early adopter. i wish i had answers.
