Gay marriage banned in two states. (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6383353/)

There is nothing common sense about banning one group of people from having the same legal rights as others, as long as they are law abiding citizens.

This is the stupidest thing in the world that this fight is all about the definiton of a word.

What a waste of resources.

Americans have the nerve to tell someone else how to live their life when they themselves are a bunch of perverts without the slightest clue what values are. This is disgusting.

Every night Jay Leno comes on and he's free to make a joke about the woman who was murdered just yesterday. What kind of pervert would make a joke about something like that? And why do all these American perverts laugh at something like that? 25 years ago it would have been considered disgraceful but apparently it's just fine, now.

I stayed home from work today to watch the election. I just briefly looked at the different channels and on a soap opera there was a woman with a net over her head. The man she knew was holding her against her will. I watched it for thirty seconds wondering why there was this net on her head. But this sick shit is what Americans want to see. It's mixed in with everything on television. Americans can't get enough of Laci Peterson's murder but they want to tell others how to live.

And for those who say "If you don't like it don't watch it", I certainly don't watch it, and I care for almost nothing mainstream. But since this garbage is mixed in with everything from radio stations to newspapers to television, it must be what the majority of people want. And these same people want to step into others' lives because of their moral philosphies.

Looks like you are mixing the couch potatoes with people who want to get up and get something done...

it's the couch potatoes, who can't get enough of the Laci Peterson murder, while the people that try to preserve the traditional American values are out collecting signatures and not giving a rat's butt about what goes on of TV...

could someone enlighten me just what these traditional values are ?
ive heard a lot from people who miss the '50's & 60's

so should we bring back segregation ?
anti-immigration ?
bring back the apollo progam (i would be in favour of this :)

so just what is a traditional value ?

I thought traditional American values included protection from tyranny of the majority. I thought the right to think or behave differently was protected, as long as such behavior doesn't hurt others. How are the two men that are living downstairs together in my building hurting you??

More generally, no more pizza for anyone, by constitutional amendment (so the pizza loving states can't sneak it across state lines).

Speaking as a non-religious person who has worked with gays and had gay friends, (but isn't gay, sorry!) the question you need to ask is, where do we draw the line on 'marriage'?
Straight/gay = OK, but no to polygamy?
What about marrying relatives? (yes, there are people out there that would do that)

This is a tougher question than one of religion V secular government, which I don't claim to have the answer to. But I think the overwhelming approval of the ballots in every state that had one speaks for what the majority of voters think about the issue.

How is gay marriage equated to that of polygamy?

Gay marriage involves TWO consensual people who happens to be of the same sex. PERIOD. no one else's business.

About the part of marrying relatives: there's major consequences for breeding within your same gene pool. That's an actual PHYSICAL/REAL threat.

The definition Canada will be adopting shortly, "Marriage, for civil purposes, is the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others"

Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

On the question of polygamy I will have to give it more thought and get back to you but on the question of incest there is a clear answer about why that shouldn't be allowed that has no religous base. Genetic differencation, it is a clear fact the lack of genetic differencation cause horrible birth defects. Acually ,and I am not sure but, I don't think that the bible frowns on incest because if you take the story of Adam and Eve at face value thier would have to have been a certain amount of incest. So I guess the moral of the story is that maybe the bible doesn't give you all the info you need to define which sort of relationship is o.k. and which is not. ;)

What I want to know is, where do we draw the line on straight "marriage".

Seems to me, once you let a man and a woman "get married", how do you say no to a brother and a sister? A 5 year old girl and a 50 year old man? A dead woman and a live guy?

Where does it end? Because, logically, once you OK "marriage" you're giving tacit approval to any union between any kind of man and any kind of woman.

rageous
11-03-2004, 07:53 PM
The reason why polygamy would still be outlawed is quite simple: we don't currently allow anyone to marry multiple people at once. Nobody is being excluded, because there is nothing to exclude them from.

The reasons against incestuous relationships have been clearly stated prior to my posting.

yes, and i'm quite sure the majority of male americans didn't want women able to vote, or then the majority of white people probably didn't want the slaves freed or equal. this may come as a shock, but the one problem with democracy is that sometimes the majority isn't always correct.

and i swear, you say that line of "i had gay friends" or "some of my best friends are gay" and you may as well have a big ass ignorance signs around your neck. go ahead, talk to one of your gay friends, and tell them that. see how long the conversation lasts.

Isn't limiting marriage to TWO people an arbitrary thing, like limiting marriage to male and female? There is plenty of historical justification for polygamy, including faraway places like Utah. Why is everyone against polygamy?
