heres an interesting observation
so far ive met 4 people (all colleagues or ex workers)
that are strongly in favour of home schooling & hence do school their
kids as such.
i have spoken at length with them & they believe the public education
system is messed up & that they can teach their kids better at home.
now what i truely dont understand is this
nearly every school or college ive seen has indians or chinese immigrants
children in the top 1%. i know a lot kids whos parents arent rich but
were 1st gen immigrants & these kids are really brilliant....
...now these kids go to the same public schools that some of the others
have rejected.
..and these are kids that were born right here in the u.s
so how come these kids are making it in the public edu system & going
on to crack the top colleges like mit & princeton
nothing against home schooling. they are free to choose
but how come i dont see a large percentile of home schooled kids
beating everyone else for top honours ?
what do you guys think of this trend ?

Dont they teach Science in the Public Education System?
Gotta keep them away from Science, and teach them creationism.

Because, public, private, or home-schooled your education is what you make of it. I think second generation immigrants have had the opportunity of education made very clear to them.

I've seen statistics suggesting that home-schooled kids are on average better than, public education kids. Nontheless, I would never do it.
My kid gets exposed to other kids in public education and is exposed to other ways of thinking. AND I SUPPORT THAT!
I did meet some kids that were home schoold by Bible thumpers and they couldn't even read in third grade. That was a bad example of home schooling.
My view is every parent should home school and send their kids to public (or private) school. Best of both worlds.

I'm guessing because the percentage of home schooled kids is so small.
I don't mean to diss my own family, but my sisters' kids, who are home schooled, are much more involved, brighter and better behaved than my niece and nephews of my two brothers.
Home schooling demands lots of time and effort from parents and it's almost impossible for many families to change their lifestyle to accommodate such a proposition.

thats because the 1st gen indians had the crap beaten
out of them at school :)
i grew up in india where the teacher can & will whack
you with a stick if you dont show respect or slack off
& i do remember quite a few of those canes & how much they
hurt :)
that said i do think kids need to interact & make
up their own minds. good parenting will take care of
the rest

Because their parents put a tremendous emphasis on education.

all i mean is that she was the top student in our class and that's probably because of what her parents told her...
