Textedit application

Hi there

Disappointed to see that this editing software has no word count or thesaurus facilities in the basic form I have. Anyone know where I can download updates to get more functionality?

Fine it may read word docs, but simpletext always did that and quite frankly it wasn't always my biggest priority when using a text editing tool.

It's getting to the point where it almost needs to be a sticky. ;)

Also, optionally, this APE module will add Services to contextual menus -- instead of having to trek all the way up to the application menu -- and allow you to weed out ones you don't want to use.

Anyways, regards Well I was just wondering why Apple would actually lose functionality from Appleworks for what I think is supposed to be an improved application. Obviously a developer led tool not user led.

I have a paper thesaurus for instance, I can use subbing skills to count words, but both of these seem a huge step backwards when my old software let me just write to deadline easily. Just realised though, I could use my old CD-rom to load appleworks from my ibook onto my new powerbook. Thanks anyway, problem solved.

Well, TextEdit isn't supposed to be an full-fledged WP, it's just a little text-editing application. With these services, though, it can be surprisingly powerful.

I assure you, btw, that TextEdit -- or, rather, the underlying translator in the Cocoa frameworks -- opens .doc files far better than SimpleText ever did.

Nah, it's cool. He just wanted to find out how to beef up TextEdit a bit. Having a word count is pretty essential if you're doing course work and stuff. It's all you need unless you're doing serious wordcrunching.

Ah, see, there's your problem, you thought TextEdit was a replacement for AppleWorks. It's not, it's the new SimpleText, that's all. :) It's just so much better that it might be mistaken for an AppleWorks wannabe.

If you want a spiffy new word processor/layout program, you'll want Pages, part of the iWork package from Apple. $79 gets you that and Keynote, the PowerPoint replacement that I just couldn't live without.

I think that misunderstanding was the reason folks reacted poorly. I'll be sure to round them up and cudgel them in the back room for you. ;)

Sorry, but, um, where's the aggression? :???: I pointed you toward some free bits of software that you can use to pump up TextEdit into something meatier. Isn't that you what you were looking for?
