Everyone's favorite game. What Would Kerry Do?
It's easy (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6886726) for Kerry to endorse everything that's gone right since the election and bemoan everything that's gone wrong. But what would he have done if elected?
Would he have ...
1) Gone into Fallujah? A necessary step to turn the tide in Iraq.
2) Postponed the elections? Thus giving a clear victory to the "insurgents" That would close off the exit strategy for US and steer the Humve into a real "quagmire".
I think the answers are no and yes.
After the elections in Iraq were a huge success, Germany is now jumping (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/05/international/europe/05diplo.html) on the democracy band wagon. Would Kerry have tuned the tide in Iraq and had Germany as a "hop on" to all this. I think the answer is no. Or maybe it is yes. Wait I'm flip flopping.
What do you think?
The intertia would have been too great to change very much of anything. I don't know what is worse, the press gunning for the country to lose it's nerve in Iraq, or Kerry feeding off of it with full knowledge he couldn't shift much of anything.
How much of an alternate reality can I create here?
Since the elections were at the end of January and the inaugaration was on Jan 20th, I predict that President Kerry would have done nothing different from GWB in those 10 days as President.
What will be different going into the future is that Kerry likely would develop a known-to-the-public exit, bring-the-troops-home, plan. Kerry would likewise be more transparent in all other areas of gov't as well.

It would be like the Team America movie:
Kerry: Now form a peaceful country, or else!
Insergent: Or else what?
Kerry: Or else we will send you a very angry letter!
Insergent: Oh.

So the election is over, and it has become increasingly clear that the land war in Iraq is a civil one -- the targets of the insurgents are mostly Iraqi forces.
If you wanted to get out of the mire you have created, what would you do?
Broker a peace between the "sides"? Continue as if nothing needs to be done? Leave and hope for the best?
What is apparent to me, at least, is that none of these or any of the other options seem reasonable. Pulling out will probably leave the country on the road to civil war. Staying risks putting our troops in front of the insurgent's ire -- and giving the insurgents due cause to continue (as if they need any more causes). Reducing the troop presence doesn't fix any of the above problems.
Should we accept that we have created a broken country in Iraq?

Yeah well, his name was 'Hans' so, he *can't* be right. Not in the US at least.

Sorry - but it isn't the only funny part, and the movie
blasts both Democrats and Republicans, so everyone can
enjoy it.
