Mac OS 9.3

I heard about this a while back. Will there really be a Mac OS 9.3 that is the end to the classic Mac OS operating systems?

Yes... in the end, the Iconmaidens reclaim the OS, pulling Steve Jobs into the Rhine, while the Apple campus goes up in flames, killing all the rest of the Macintosh development team. It's really quite dramatic.

OS 9 will be slowly phased out. Support will still be there for a couple years, but don't expect to see OS 9 applications coming out anymore.
I expect there will be an OS 9.3, with nothing more than updated Carbon, FireWire drivers, and maybe networking tools (like WebDAV).

I think so, or 9.5 at least. Why leave your last OS at a x.x.x like 9.2.2 which should be out <a href="http://www.thinksecret.com/features/LU1f2.html" target="_blank">soon</a>.

Hard to say no more until no more apps are written for 9 and no more updates for version 9 software and all the major apps are X native. When 10.2 comes out, that might reveal probs with 9.2.2 and need a 9.3 and when 10.3 comes out that might reveral some probs....

It's a good bet that by the time we reach 10.3 Classic will either be phased out or an optional install. :cool:

It would be nice if classic/OS 9 could be made smaller and somewhat "embedded" into X (if that's the proper way to say it. It would be nice if classic could boot without loading a single extension and actually pipe things like QT and stuff through their OS X counterparts. It would be nice if classic apps could run within their own classic environments, so that they are protected from eachother. Also, with classic window buffering (which we know Apple has been working on) classic apps could integrate beautifully into X. I see no reason why Apple can't rework the classic appearance manager to use Aqua (real aqua, not a theme), especially if windows are buffered. Also, with buffering then live window dragging would be a easy to implement. Also, drop shadows would also be nice. I have a feeling that some of these advancements will come, but not for quite a while.

My prediction - when Final Cut Pro goes MacOS X native, we won't see any major MacOS 9.x.x developments.

I'd be surprised if Apple itself has a definate date for ending work on Classic Mac OS (here's to OS 9.5.1.2.2! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> ) It'll likely be maintained for Blue Box purposes, receive bug fixes, etc. for a long time yet.

The more important questions (now that 9.x has already been starved of new features or promotion) are when Apple will decide to 1) halt preinstalls on new systems, and 2) stop delivering apps for the older OS.

"Friday, then two weeks after that" sounds good. ;)

I don't remember where but yesterday I read that Phil Sh??? (VP that often takes stage with S.J.) announced that OS X would become the default OS next march (or spring, something like that). I'd assume that sortly thereafter they'll stop making OS 9 apps (ie. I doubt we'll see iTunes 3.0 for OS 9).

I assume they'll update the OS for some time to come for new hardware support (at least through 2002, for those who don't want X). By 2003 though I don't think Apple will give you a choice (afterall it does cost them $$$ to keep udateing 2 OS's).

BTW: How long has AI been back :confused: Just checked it out today, couldn't believe that there was a new design (very nice BTW) & that the forums were back! :eek:
