Satire (http://www.democraticunderground.com/crisis/05/013_bw.html)

I thought this piece amazing on a number of different levels. First I find it interesting that the thought of large Democratic gains in the 2006 election is considered satire among even Democrats. The second interesting thing is analyzing this Democratic dream/wish list.

In analyzing it I am struck, though it shouldn't be surprising at this point, by the lack of ideas. The Democratic dream isn't a proposed universal health care plan that suddenly everyone desires and votes to insure. It isn't the creation of a new progressive tax code that raises taxes on the rich to their fair share, or even a promised improvement in schools. The dream plan/scenario for Democrats is the cratering of the U.S economy into a state of recession/depression so that someone might vote for them.

The Economy: The American economy is in deep recession and, many economists fear, on the brink of depression. Heedless of warnings by economists from both parties, Bush and the Republican Congress continued its policy of deep tax cuts to the wealthy, the dismantling of social services, and huge deficits with no end in sight.

Recognizing at last the unsustainability of these policies, the international financial community lost all confidence in the dollar, and, as a result, the value of the dollar against world currencies plummeted.

Then the economic dominoes proceeded to fall. The price of imported goods skyrocketed and became unaffordable to ordinary Americans. International banks (primarily Chinese and Japanese) refused to continue their support of Bush's budget deficit which forced the US to raise interest rates dramatically.

Consequently, debt-ridden US consumers have lost their homes, disposable family income has shrunk, businesses have closed, and unemployment is rising to levels not seen since the Great Depression of the thirties. However, this time the bankrupt US government can not supply unemployment compensation or other relief. The suffering public has put the blame for this disaster directly upon the Republicans and the Bush Administration.

What a dream scenario Democrats!

Two guys write a piece of fiction and it somehow represents the dreams of the entire Democratic party?

That may be the biggest single leap I've ever seen you make.

Either it is satire, or it is a real world view. You choose. It cannot be both.

I didn't say anything about the Democratic party. I spoke in generalized terms.

But the trends can be seen in the satire

All comedy contains truth in it or else there is no reason to find it funny. If someone shows a skit in which Clinton is hitting on a woman, we find that funny because he is a known womanizer. This piece is satire in that it talks about a dream scenario. The kernels of truth, that the Democrats have no plans, have resorted to conspiracy to explain their lack of voter draw, and are hoping for failure both in the U.S. economy and Iraq are all truths that make the satire possible.

That is a lame excuse and you know it, especially since you are the one who vigorously defends the republicans against satire which shows its racist undercurrents.

Truth or no, this is satire which represents a small fraction of the party.

You must have me confused with someone else. I am very pro-free speech and especially pro-satire. I do object to non-satire attempts to link Republicans with racists or racism for the same reason I would object to an article claiming that the earth is flat, they aren't true.
