View Full Version : Border security is really working.....

Don't try this if you look middle eastern but otherwise you should be ok.

In April, Gregory Despres hitchhiked to the border crossing at Calais carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained by what appeared to be blood. Customs officials confiscated the weapons and fingerprinted Despres, but allowed him to enter the United States.

Apparently he had a reason for all this gear - he'd been doing some murders. Luckily, the time saved on avoiding any paperwork here will help in the clamping down on people with brown skin and middle eastern names flooding through the borders....

Remember: we're at war™.

They detained him for two hours while they searched databases for his name for any reason, couldn't find anything.

They weren't sure what was on the chainsaw. (Yes, I agree this is pretty stupid.)

Under law, they had no reason to detain him further.

Unless you agree that the authorities should have the right to detain people for whatever reason they choose whenever they choose... but wait... we're against that, right?

Come on. All that gear screams probable cause. They COULD have done something. But the paperwork would have been a bitch, so they didn't.

I guess I've been to too many SCA events and grew up in a rural area, but even taken together, a chainsaw, sword, and machete in the back of a truck wouldn't make me instantly think murderer. I'd see yard tools of reenactment enthusiast. I don't see probable cause with simply that.

Now they *did* say that there was 'something' on the chainsaw, and that's why they detained him while they checked for any warrants, alerts, etc. They also said they couldn't be sure what that substance was, so they had to let him go.

Jesus, now I remember why I stopped coming into AO.

If you've ever lived near the border, you will see that border patrol does not belong to either country. They're on their own side and, for all practical purposes, answer to noone.

I've been on a week's leave and things haven't gotten any better here. Unbelievable. You can talk about the big issues of life on AO, but apparently you have to check your knowledge of History and Philosophy at the door. :grumble:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Junior God
by Robert W. Service

The Junior God looked from his place
In the conning towers of heaven,
And he saw the world through the span of space
Like a giant golf-ball driven.
And because he was bored, as some gods are,
With high celestial mirth,
He clutched the reins of a shooting star,
And he steered it down to earth.

The Junior God, 'mid leaf and bud,
Passed on with a weary air,
Till lo! he came to a pool of mud,
And some hogs were rolling there.
Then in he plunged with gleeful cries,
And down he lay supine;
For they had no mud in paradise,
And they likewise had no swine.

The Junior God forgot himself;
He squelched mud through his toes;
With the careless joy of a wanton boy
His reckless laughter rose.
Till, tired at last, in a brook close by,
He washed off every stain;
Then softly up to the radiant sky
He rose, a god again.

The Junior God now heads the roll
In the list of heaven's peers;
He sits in the House of High Control,
And he regulates the spheres.
Yet does he wonder, do you suppose,
If, even in gods divine,
The best and wisest may not be those
Who have wallowed awhile with the swine?

Give up to drink
don't stop to think,
life simply isn't viable.
The world is odd
and so is God
but Persian plonk's reliable.

More of a positive, schedule-changing, priority-reevaluting capitalistic event.

(Also, that Service poem should not be taken for anything other than a call to wash ourselves at the nearest stream and get on with life -- there are many hours spent going down the tubes here.)
