Can someone please explain this to me.

It seems that Iraq is paying $200 Million per month (http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/business/?id=13556) to IMPORT oil.

And there are still shortages everywhere (except at US bases).

How does this work ?

Ironically, the country used to produce more than enough to meet its needs before the US-led invasion in March 2003, Dathar al-Khashab, manager of the flagship Dura refinery on the southern outskirts of Baghdad, said.

That amounted to 15 million litres (4 million gallons) a day.

But an estimated one million new cars on the road and thousands of new generators have pushed daily demand up to 23 million litres (around 6 million gallons).

One million new cars ???? I call BS.

Hey...I've got a crazy idea - turn on the electricity then people won't need generators - nah, never work......

Since the embargo was lifted, I'd expect an increase in vehicles since parts can be bought and much of the country's vehicle inventory would have been decimated after a decade of overuse.

Still, 1 million vehicles seems high. But then, what do I know.

Since this thread will either degenerate into "It's all Bush's fault" or "Peak Oil is around the corner", I vote for the latter.

Anybody read Wired's no-meltdown nuclear reactors? This weekend's paper had a feature on thermal solar cells, which can help power water heaters, but the payback is still small compared to the outlay.

Can there be a mass market, modern home that is energy self-sufficient?
What's up in the world of alternative energy?

It's all Bush's fault.

Peak Oil is round the corner.
