QTVR authoring studio is ancient and can't do cubic VRs and I haven't heard about a newer version coming.

Are there any third party solutions for OS X?

Seems odd that Apple doesn't make an authoring solution for one of their coolest technologies

Sure. There is for example <a href="http://www.realviz.com/" target="_blank">REALVIZ Stitcher 3.1</a>. A good software. You can do cubic VRs with it.
there is also VR Worx 2.1 from VR Toolbox, but I don't know it it does cubics.

For QTVR products in general, visit <a href="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/tools/qtvr.html" target="_blank">this page at Apple.</a>

I highly recommend VR Toolbox's <a href="http://www.vrtoolbox.com/vrthome.html" target="_blank">VR Works 2.1</a>. They have a free demo version and it is cheaper than Stitcher.
