iTunes content updates tomorrow

Apple's iTunes Music Store did not roll-over today as it has historically done on Tuesdays, hinting that content announcements may be part of Wednesday's special media event. The store also failed to offer visitors an "iTunes New Music Tuesday" track and podcast.

As part of its content offerings on Wednesday, Apple is expected to announced that the iTunes Music Store will feature Madonna's new single "Hung Up" a full week before it's available in stores. The iTunes Music Store will also begin selling the pop singer's new album one day in advance of retail stores, complete with a special bonus track not shipping on retail CDs.

iTunes NYC after-party

Analysts and members of the media attending Motorola's iTunes phone launch after-party at Manhattan's Webster Hall will be treated to live performances from Common, The Juan Maclean and Stretch Armstrong, AppleInsider has been told.

The event will also feature an open bar and complimentary eats.

Jobs in Saratoga for horse races

Shortly after canceling plans to present the keynote address at this month's Apple Expo in Paris, sources say Steve Jobs on Saturday boarded his private Gulfstream V jet and flew to Saratoga, NY.

From there he was escorted via a Cadillac Escalade to the VIP seating area of the Saratoga race track for an afternoon of horse racing. Rumor has it that Jobs may have attended the races to watch his own horse compete, though there is no public record of him ever purchasing or owning a race horse.

Neither Apple nor representatives for Apple Expo have offered an explanation as to why Jobs suddenly backed out of hosting the opening keynote address at this year's show. However, it's believed that Apple may have been forced to push back several of its fall product introductions to a later date and venue.

iPod mini, high-end PowerMacs fading

Outside of Apple's direct distribution channels, stock of all iPod mini models has become increasingly constrained, sources are reporting. Apple is widely expected to refresh the smaller candy-colored players with flash memory-based storage and color screens. Current iPod minis contain monochrome displays and hard-disk-drive storage.

Meanwhile, the company's dual 2.7GHz PowerMac G5 appears to be fading fast. In the US, Apple lists the desktops for availability in 7 to 10 business days. However, some European Apple resellers have been told not to expect any further shipments of the high-end model. Instead, Apple has told these resellers that their best bet would be to settle for dual 2.3GHz models.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ] (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1260)

"iPod mini, high-end PowerMacs fading"

Interesting choice of words.

The iPod Mini should be repaced it seems. But what about the Powermac 2.7? Are the sales fading/ Is Apple going to replace it without replacing the ones below it?

Usually the term is "supply constrained".

I saw a mention on Macrumors (Page 2) about the new smaller iPod mini being called an iPod nano ... to that end I've done a quick mockup of what it might look like:

If Apple released an 'iPod nano' wouldn't that just negate the whole concept behind the iPod mini? Why would they keep both the mini and the 'nano'? Makes more sense to just christen the 'nano' as the new mini and leave it at that.

But I still don't believe that 'iPod nano' story (my confidence in Kevin Rose aside, of course).

i love steve but reading this part, i couldn't help but think of these lyrics:

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all of the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and....

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you.....

MY GOD!!!

Thats it! People have wondered for years who that song is about- Mick Jagger Warren Beatty.... Its Steve!!!! He dates Joan Baez or ehl some famous female singer.

Course I think he was still in college when that song came out. But I agree it works.

Now a question for all.

How about Apple move the mini to some flash based thinner thing and move the white iPod to th emini form factor. It could be a bit larger to accomodate the thicker hard drive. But people love the aluminum cylinder. No finger prints. I think it would be great. They could keep it white.

Utter nonsense. From what I understand, Apple is upgrading the existing line, to include color screen, smaller form factor, and longer battery life. There will be no overlap in products. It's just a refresh.

you would not believe the number of apple fans that would pay $5/month each just for a chip to be implanted in steve jobs so we would know exactly where he is every second of every hour of every day :D ~ as a fully-fledged google-earth style iApp and of course a dashboard widget

there would also be a carmen-sandiego-online-game "where in the world is steve jobs" for those who elect for the $1/month subscription version...

I was visiting the Apple Cupertino campus and saw Steve's car. His car has no license plate as to prevent people knowing who he is while driving on the freeway.

Revise your drawing. The new Mini is supposed to have a slightly smaller wheel and a slightly smaller (though with higher resolution) screen.

There was a story on TV this evening about the CEO of some oil company that used his jet to bring food and supplies to the hurricane victims and to help them evacuate. He challenged other CEOs to do the same. Just puts things into perspective. It seems that Steve Jobs has made a lot of uncharacteristic decisions lately. He doesn't seem like his old self not that I know him personally or anything.

It looks like the wheel is smaller or maybe my eyes are just playing tricks on me. Make it a little narrower and I'll buy it. I do wonder why they would need to use a smaller screen though. It looks like they could keep the iPod mini screen size as is and still make the rest a lot smaller. I hope they announce it tomorrow. If this event is just about that Motorola phone I'm going to puke.

He drew the wheel a hair smaller but it's still too big. He drew the screen rather larger than the original instead of smaller. That makes the wheel look smaller than it is.

YES YES YES one3.... that's excellent mockupness...
don't forget super scratch resistant too. i swear my iPod Mini revA is the first digital device i've ever owned that has sustained as much scratching and punishment, even the screen comes off hardly cosmetically affected.............

extra credit for the lanyard hole. stylin. and similar to the shuffle with hanging it round your neck, except it's more 'blinged out' with the iPod mini metallic finishes.

edit: scratch test benchmark: put your [device] in the same pocket as your keys. after a week, evaluate results.
edit2: as melgross pointed out, the screen might end up being smaller though, even if it is higher res and color, at the moment this is according to thinksecret IIRC :(

Problem:
with this new rendition the bottom of the device has no way of docking. Yeah, there could be a USB connector on top, but that would mean the screen would be upside down when docked.

That's because those people who did not evacuate New Orleans before the hurricane are too poor to buy his product. As Steve himself would say with his famous words "F***-em"

we placed a large order for various equipment through the Apple Store and the rep told us the dual 2.7 we ordered was gonna take 2 weeks more (albeit, it was a customized model). The guy actually SUGGESTED to me to have it delivered within 10 days of the 20th (when there was supposed to be the Keynote in Paris) so that if there was a PowerMac update by the 20th, I would be eligible for a free upgrade. They would send a new PowerMac and they would take back the other.

Either the guy was a rumor junkie like the rest of us, or he knew something.

Anyway, I asked for the delivery of the PowerMac for the 15th just in case. Week more, week less, I'd rather be on the safe side

Get some ridiculously high benchmarks, that's what (says he from his PIII 800mhz)

EDIT: Figured I should say something about the topic.

GUYS - stop stalking the dude, who cares if he went to the races to *maybe* bet on his own horse which he *probably* has never owned.

I'm hoping we get the Motorolo/itunes phone. Am looking for a phone soon, and if it can replace my PDA as Mp3 playing device, so much the better. Just need some more pockets, that's all, I dont think cargo pants are int he school dress code. If only Apple would bring out a Motorolo/itunes/PDA phone, that would be uber cool. For me, the geek at least, i dont know how it would sit with the traditional ipoders.

But the PDA is never going to happen, so i'll settle for the phone.

I'm hoping (dismal at best) that we get some computer updates. The lacking of 2.7ghz powermacs seems to indicate this, but its been indicated wrongly before. I dont think we will see any x86 based machines at this is a conference for Apples big market - it's mp3 players.

IF the mini goes flash - will apple keep the shuffle? Wouldn't it be simpler to simply give a low and high capacity version of the mini? I know the screen would would swallow up cash, but Apple can already command a price premium, take advantage of us so they can keep wasting money on the computer market.

<educated guess><sidenote> WHen they update the mac mini to x86, it is probably going to be a celeron M, and the older centrino kind. It will probably be intel intergrated graphics </sidenote></educated guess>

Rumor has it that we will see the iTunes enabled mobile phone from Motorola. One question, could today be the day that we see the Video iPod?

A couple of sites are already making references to the Video iPod:

http://www.cinematology.com/ states "Feed your video iPod"

http://www.consumers4choice.org/site/PageServer states "Find out if you won an Apple Video iPod November 9th"

If we do see the Video iPod today or at some point in the near future, it will be a great move by Apple to have it out ahead of the 2005 holiday shopping season. I welcome any product that could provide Apple an avenue to sell products to a larger customer base as it should further fuel the "iPod Halo Effect", a term used to describe how iPods have led to sales of Macs.

It's possible that MacWorld was invited. Possibly Maccentral will have a commentary. My Forbes account might send me emails about it. But the rules might not allow any of that. Also, they would probably need a WiFi connection there, and there might not be one. One can hope.

But what would the phone broadcast to? There are no Bluetooth networks around that I'm aware of. It would have to send to the laptop which then has to send to where?

If they report via phone, then they have to talk into it while the presentation is going on. That's unlikely though possible.

Motorola and Apple today announced the availability of the world's first mobile phone with iTunes, enabling music lovers to transfer up to 100 of their favorite songs from the iTunes jukebox on their Mac or PC to their mobile phone*. The Motorola ROKR features easy-to-use menus, simple navigation and playback, and the ability to simply switch from listening to music to talking on the phone and back again with the push of a dedicated music key.

The new Motorola ROKR (pronounced "Rocker") is available in the following markets:

- U.S. - today, exclusively with Cingular

- U.K. - expected to be available first with Carphone Warehouse in mid-September and with O2, Orange, Virgin Mobile, BT Mobile and other top retailers by late September

- France - expected to be available by late September through key retailers

- Italy - expected to be available by late September through key retailers

- Canada - expected to be available in mid- to late-September with Rogers Wireless

- Hong Kong - expected to be available by late September through multiple retail outlets and operator channels

- Australia, Singapore and the Philippines - expected to be available late September through early October through retail and operator channels

- Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and other markets throughout the world - expected to be available in the fourth quarter

"The Motorola ROKR represents the ultimate convergence of mobile communications and music," said Ed Zander, chairman and CEO of Motorola. "Fusing iTunes with your always-with-you mobile phone, we're revolutionizing the way the world experiences mobile self-expression and entertainment."

"We've worked closely with Motorola to deliver the world's best music experience on a mobile phone," said Eddy Cue, vice president of iTunes. "We're also thrilled to be working with some of the largest wireless carriers in the world to bring this pioneering phone to market."

The Motorola ROKR features a color display for viewing album art, dual built-in stereo speakers and stereo headphones that also serve as a mobile headset with microphone. Music fans can randomly autofill or manually fill the mobile phone with playlists of their favorite music, audiobooks and Podcasts from their iTunes library via a USB connection. The Motorola ROKR pauses music automatically when users take a call and offers the ability to listen to music while checking messages or snapping a photo.

Pricing and Availability

For more information on product availability and pricing in each market, please visit www.hellomoto.com . iTunes for Mac and Windows includes the iTunes Music Store and is available as a free download from www.apple.com/itunes . Purchase and download of songs from the iTunes Music Store for Mac or Windows requires a valid credit card with a billing address in the country of purchase.

I love the new look of iTunes 5 and the nano is a home run, although I wish it had more storage.

Looks like the iPod mini is gone. Effectively Apple has instituted a price increase. 2GB for $199, 4GB for $249 (vs. 4GB for 199 & 6GB for 249). The new iPod nanos include a color screen and a smaller body.

[edit]
BTW, the store is back up.

yep its another price rise via stealth tactic from Apple, well we knew they were not dumb. THe fate of the 2.7Ghz G5 puzzles me. It must be either REALLY hard to get enough chips from IBM or it is EOL'd and getting replaced soon, which seems very unlikely. I honestly think Apple have dropped the ball with the Power* lineup (*Mac and *Book), they dont seem to be paying any attention to it at all. Certainly the dropping of the Paris keynote indicates that nothing earth-shattering will be released there, so I guess small feature bumps is all we are going to get until Intel... :( seems a shame to end the Power PC era like this, not with a bang but a whimper.....

From there he was escorted via a Cadillac Escalade to the VIP seating area of the Saratoga race track for an afternoon of horse racing. Rumor has it that Jobs may have attended the races to watch his own horse compete, though there is no public record of him ever purchasing or owning a race horse.

i love steve but reading this part, i couldn't help but think of these lyrics:

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all of the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and....

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you....

This place is getting really creapy - the whole "steve" thing.
he is a guy who happens to be a great business mind and have a commanding stage presence, he is a CEO - like all the other CEOs- he wants to brag about the record profit in the quarterly call...he just hapens to double as the pitch man. YOU PEoPLE TAKE THIS WAY TOO SERIOUSLY!!!IT IS A SICKNESS

a_greer, in a time when great leaders are few and far between, we all need someone to look up to or at least make us dream. SJ and Apple do this.

I'm not a Steve worshipper, but damn, the force is strong with this one!

The guy has charisma. That's all there is to it.

Some people resent that and try to pull him dowm. That's expected as well.

For years after he took over I wasn't so certain that he knew what he was doing. Apple's sales continued to fall. Marketshare went from 8% when he took over to 2.8%.

But whatever he's doing now, it seems to be working. Whether it's a brilliant plan or just dumb luck.

Jobs in Saratoga for horse races

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you.....

i love steve...and i think he should be very proud of the products because they ARE steve...can you imagine apple without steve? but this is ...i don't know...ironic? ok i will never speak of this again ;)

If they report via phone, then they have to talk into it while the presentation is going on. That's unlikely though possible.

Isn't it possible to add text to a site via SMS/send email by cell network? Even if there is no Bluetooth AP, or WiFi, it's possible to post to WordPress by using a phone to email a secret address configurable by the site's admins and it will be updated as new emails come in.

I think the "price increase" is well worth it though. Switching from magnetic to solid state storage isn't necessarily cheap, and hopefully the nano will be a lot more durable, despite losing the all-around aluminum shell. The fact that it also gets Photo capabilities is very nice.

I even heard someone compare it to the PSP. They know they don't need it, to really effectively utilise it they'd need to spend a lot more time traveling, or staying, away from home where they can just play the PS2. It'll be costly initially but they still want one and that sort of product development and marketing is genius. Making people just want a product for no really great reason is very good business in CE.

The downside with the Nano is I also heard a lot of people say they disliked the size since it would be too small and they'd lose it or drop it too easily and from handling it I'd say I'm rather inclined to agree.

Yeah, but boy is that ever a hassle. However it was done, the big legit news orgs. and web sites like Macworld were able to do it.

The same thing could be said for the Shuffle.

I picked my daughter up from school Thursday and Fri (only because she just started Hi School and isn't used to the subway here in NYC) and saw (mostly girls) wearing Shuffles around their necks.

I've read that the same can be done with the Nano. No doubt others will come out with something to make that easier and more secure. They could always put it under their shirts.

That is one stupid CEO. He burned 10x the fuel and used up 10x the depriciation cost vs getting the food there by truck.
More money than sense - he should have spent the same money and sent 10x the amount of food by truck.

It's possible he could have saved one life. Hours rather than days. If the administration had done that things would have been better.
