Apparently UPS are going to be delivering me my first Mac today. I have to tell someone! Needless to say I'm a little excited...

Sorry for wasting your time with my unnecessary energy. Has anyone else got like this for a computer before?

Yay! It's here. No I've got to go to Uni and talk to some lecturers. But them I'm coming home and sorting it all out!

Make sure you put some newspaper down on the floor in the corner near where you plan to set up your Mac.

Don't want any 'accidents' when you get doubly exited while opening and setting it up. ;)

It is done! I'm now the proud owner of an Intel iMac and I'm loving it. Just played with Photo Booth and thought the first thing I'd better do was post on here...

Does it seem fast/snappy enough for you? What's your favorite aspect of your Mac? What do you wish were different?

Congratulations. I get that little bit of excitement with any brand new (expensive) purchase, but a Mac makes it even more special.

I'm really enjoying it. The thing is huge. I didn't expect it to loom over me quite so much. Things are fairly quick but the place I really noticed a lack of speed was browsing the web in Firefox. I think I've sorted that now by getting AdBlock working on here, seems to speed things up. I tried World of Warcraft on here and it was a bit sluggish, but after checking the info on it it's a PowerPC program so that's to be expected.

I've had a play with everything that comes with it and I really like Front Row, it's very classy and impressed a lot of people today. The camera is grand for one so small. The thing I like the most is the space it's given me on my desk. No more 19" CRT for me! I've got space to put rubbish, and I can sit with the thing in front of me so I'm not arching my neck all the time or sitting at a funny angle.

The keyboard has a lovely feel to it, clicky in a nice way. It's gonna take a while to get used to the @ and " being the other way round and don't even get me started on not using CTRL + SHIFT for quick highlighting!

Also, what is the official use of what would be the Page Up, Page Down, Home and End buttons on here? The top pair and bottom pair seem to perform the same functions!

Other than that (and those aren't exactly massive problems, more quirks that I'll get used to eventually), I love it and I definitely don't regret it.

Although, now I come to think of it, I think I'll need to do some asking around to see whether anyone has any idea of how to get the iMac onto a Fedora Core Samba domain and get it working browsing all the shares and things...

It appears going from the stock 512mb to a gig does wonders for teh snappy™.

I went for the executive gig. Same as my old P4 machine. I figured that 512Gb just wasn't going to be enough.

yay..! i got hooked on the joy of opening a new mac that in 2004 i bought and sold 4 different brand new macs. :D not sustainable though, so luckily i have stopped now and live vicariously through people like you. mmm, the best part is peeling off the transparent plastic that covers the white bits. erotic, almost :err:

Samba domain setup, your first port of call is Applications>Utilities>Directory Access to set up Samba somwhere in there... i do this for workgroup name setup, i think you also use it for samba domain setup.

The @ key thing -- have you got it set for UK keyboard layout correctly?

About the keyboard thing. I'm quite happy to accept that to be a 'true' Mac user I have to accept the keyboard for what it is.

Thankfully I think I've got Samba working (sort of). I can now at least access my Windows machine from my Mac (I had the wrong slashes in my smb:// statement). It's enough to copy everything off of the Windows machine and start anew. I've got my old laptop if I need to use Excel, which is the only thing I really miss since switching (I use Visual Basic macros for my freelance work etc.).

Other than that I just stretch my arms out. Enjoy the additional space that the iMac has given me, thanks very much for your help.

Oh, and peeling the plastic from the stand was rather naughty!

As far as keyboard keys/functionality goes from what I have been able to tell (using Xcode mainly) the Page Up and Page Down keys move the text a page at a time, not to the top or bottom of a document. The Home and End move between the first line of document and the last line. Which is different to a windows box which normally associated Home and End with a single line. To achieve this you need to use the CMD + arrow keys.

Either Page Up/Down or Home/End doesn't move the cursor (I think from memory) just what is displayed. To return to where you were I just hit the arrow keys.

I know switching between windows and Mac is a hard adjustment but after making mistakes for 5 minutes straight, your brain adjusts.
