Not all things are equal and it is the nature of the thing lampooned rather than the lampooning that is the benchmark.

Offending fascists is not the same as offending 911 widows because fascists and 911 widows are not synonymous.

I don't know. This satyrical Flash game is only dangerous if someone takes it seriously and consequently takes to killing these guys. Not likely.

But think about the consequences of all the folks that take Coulter seriously. Coulter would have less significance than Pat Paulsen if no one took her seriously, invited her to write bestsellers, and appear on nationwide TV.

I must say that I am somewhat shocked. My Mom called last night to chit-chat and ended up asking me about Ann Coulter. (Mom has cable TV, is a born Republican, who is married to a worshiping Democrat who is still fighting the Civil War) Ann Coulter is attacking me from all sides. Ann Coulter infects all threads. The problem is that as days and weeks go by I can no longer tell 'reality' from 'irony' I'm afraid.

There is now no view - no matter how ridiculous, extreme or unbelievable - that I can these days hear expressed without assuming the person expressing it is being serious. And, horrendously, they nearly always are - unfortunately it is a necessary position learnt from experience.

In fact , the only way I can tell is by a method such as the one we're talking about: making a mistake, being corrected and noting it down for future reference re the person concerned.

And I'm not being ironic or sarcastic. It's frightening.
