View Full Version : Apple Insider v Apple Nova?

I have been wondering this since joing here a little while ago. What is the difference between Apple Insider and Apple Nova? They have very similar designs and setups, yet AI has plenty more members. Forgive me if this has been discussed before but my search came up empty.

Applenova originated as a kind of Appleinsider spinoff. The folks who started that used to be here, but then decided to start their own forum.

Frankly, I'd never heard of AppleNova, and I rather like the often incendiary discussions between really well-informed people here on AI. :D

It was a fork over administrative disagreements, basically.

Here I'll help you with your search. http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=45591 That is a link to a thread that, if you read the whole thing (it's long), you will understand a lot more. I had the same question for a while, and if you just want a basic answer it comes down to the .com on AI and the .org on AN. Some people didn't like the ads on AI and so they started AN. Like I said, that was just a very very basic summary. Go read the link if you want a more extensive answer. I started participating in this thread toward the end of it. Look at the dates as you read too.

AppleNova is prettier. AppleInsider lets you talk politics. AppleInsider publishes rumors.

Indeed, that was long Apple Insider's slogan: "Come for the Apple rumors, stay for the head butting assholes".
A lot of the folks who were instrumental in starting the new site were positively phobic about the, um, spirited talk in whatever was acting as a political forum at the time (topic allocation has gone through several incarnations), although that was by no means the primary reason for the split.
The feeling was that ill-will and contentiousness seeped out of the political discussions and into the rest of the fora like some kind of toxic pollutant.
That has never been my experience here but try telling them that. Personally, I think the lack of at least a little bit of rancor makes Apple Nova a bit blander, although the bonding experience of getting it off the ground with a shared sense of ennobling outrage makes it clubbier, which has its plusses and minuses.

Thanks for clearing that up. I figured they had to be somehow connected. Kind of silly it was over administrative differences -- sounds like big business.

I admit that I've probably spent a total of 3 minutes at Applenova, but I remember when the split happened, and I don't recall anything at all about the political forums. You're right that they didn't like the political forum anyway, but that was incidental, from what I recall.
As I recall, the administrator here and the higher-ups got into a hissy fight over what the board should look like. It was extremely lame, as I remember it, with all kinds of ridiculous drama. But it seems like they've got a nice group over there now, and I'm sorry they took some good folks with them that I miss reading.

Somewhere I have a .pdf of a key thread that led to the big split. I'll have to see if I can find it and come up with a better answer for you all.
hardeeharhar
08-03-2006, 01:32 PM
While the fundamentals of the split were over ads and Kasper's then absent dictatorial bent, it was more over the creation of a hidden forum where a clickish but and certainly not general group of users participated in school boy discussions and fomented a new forum sans ads etc... This group included at least one of the admins and several moderators, needless to say but I think Kasper saw this forum and some of its topics as a coup against him and went on a ban/lock account spree, including killing my primary identity.
The two forums have a large number of shared members -- I post here for the vitrol, and there for the general humor value in it all...
addabox
08-03-2006, 02:58 PM
I should clarify: I know that political forums had nothing to do with the split, I was just noting that that had long been a source of contention with a lot of the folks who created Nova and they took the opportunity of a new site to put their feelings about that into practice. You can still find the occasional reference to "those assholes who argue all day over at AI".

Well, I've spent a bit more than 3 mintues at AN, so I can at least give another perspective on it.
Some of us wanted to run the forums ad free. It wasn't going to happen. Some also felt that the forums were being neglected in the face of the front page (which is fine since the forums generate little to no revenue) and weren't happy about that either.
Of course everything happened about as piss poorly as possible, and there was high drama but it seems that's internet life for you.
In the end everyone got their own sandbox.
The politics bit wasn't a reason for a split, but it was a policy change from AI.

Interesting, in everything that I read, I never heard that Brad did that. This piece of information really puts a twist on things. So was it Brad that went on that banning spree?
FormerLurker

IIRC, Brad got banned without any notice or explanation, so he signed in as Kaspar simply to let people know what was going on. I don't believe that he was ever attempting to "impersonate" Kaspar.
And, the "banning spree" was all Kaspar. People were getting banned just for relaying what happened, as I am doing here.
So if I get banned anytime soon, you'll know why.

(It may come in handy if I ever get trapped in a war zone like PO...I mean...Lebanon.)
I joined AI formally after the Great Blackout, but was lurking when it was still Reality.
I go to both AI and Nova for Mac-related discussions. I think at Nova there's a bit more playfulness, where people don't take their posts (or themselves) so seriously as at AI.

I just stumbled upon this thread because AN seems to be down at the moment. Anyway, I thought it was an interesting read. Nice to know what some who stuck around here think about those of us who migrated over there. And, for what it's worth, I was never in a frat (though I'm sadly a 30-something now... We can all live here, together.
Like a proper family.
The other place is prettier though. It'd be like moving back to an apartment that the landlord doesn't care about vs. a sparsely yet tastefully decorated house... that we've apparently lost the keys to.
I suggest we all just go outside and think about what nice things we can do for our fellow humans.
For example, I was just out walking the dog and I thought about helping an old lady chip ice off her sidewalk. That would've been nice for her! I'm going back outside to think of more.

and yes i am a pre blackout AI human that hasn't been here in a while...hoping to find why another site is down...likely tied to the soon to be demise of thinksecret i assume...
and i lurk here from time to time, but usually don't post...seems to be alot of overlap aways...and many post at both sites...
but i admit i 99% stay at the other site mostly because two apple nerd sites is harder to keep track of than one apple nerd site...and i have my scooter nerd site to visit and my nintendo wii nerd site to visit...so that limits me some...only so much nerdiness to go around
though i miss powerdoc and wish he would visit AN from time to time
as for the 30 something frat remark, eh, i'll let it pass as i'm well past my 30's (sadly)...
as for re-combining the two sites back into one...not a horrid idea...but it's not horrid having them split either...

I should head over there but I'm on vacation myself and will have to hold off for now. I'll see about stopping in later tonight though.
Yeah, applenova.
(I'm NosferaDrew btw) :)
I figured you out by your profile and your chat handle. :)
Geez, I head out for a few hours and I miss the party!
FFL originally stood for Formerly FormerLurker, as it didn't make much sense to be a FormerLurker on a brand new site. :D
Also Fishhead For Life, as well as From FL.
I thought FFL was for Fishhead For Life. Since I haven't been a very active member here I never knew.
I go to Canada for a few days, and look what happens! :p
I wonder what my post count is now...
I had a few posts from the last time AN went down but they have all disappeared for some reason. Searching for AppleNova only brought up a few threads and none of them are from the last time AN went down.
Either way, now I'm becoming a little more active here though I do so hate getting pop-ups and pop-unders.

Not in VA?
I'll be in Virginia Beach after Christmas and me and my Mom will be heading up to Williamsburg where my sister and family lives for First Night in Williamsburg.
Not looking forward to the cold!

Wow, I was expecting this to be fixed by now. I've made my trip and still nothing.
What's so funny is after seeing Hassan on here my first thought was wondering if he had a bike anywhere near here. Now I feel really late for the party on that one.
Carol, can I know something too? Please? :D
Is FormerLurker FFL? Most of the member I know are using the same name here and that makes it easier for me to know who each other is.
Yeah, FFL stands for, I think, "Formerly Former Lurker". The others are self-explanatory.

Yep, I left Va Beach last night and am now in Charleston SC. Seems like the weather is supposed to be about 72DegF tomorrow! I'll be back to the Beach middle of next week. I can't say I'll miss the cold while I'm down here either.
Williamsburg is very cool and you should have a blast. How long will you be in the area?

We should make you a cake or something when we get our house back... right now it feels like we've moved back into the old family home or something... You don't even know!! All these whippersnappers running around here are really driving that point home!
We're like an ark-ship that went zooshing off into the great beyond to settle new worlds... on our "planet" we have a custom of making BEER a choice on most every poll, in order to allow people to avoid selecting a controversial opinion, thus avoiding long-standing rivalries. It usually works out nicely, and we (for the most part) remain so laid back that we don't have time to fuss and grumble.
But for me, the unpleasantries of the breakaway weren't directly related to me, so AI is still the "home team", just not where I play now. I'd sure hope that the AI crowd would come shack up with us if this old house has any hiccups.

hmm... this all might be the egg nog talking... This thread brings back some good old memories of blackouts, secret forums, watermelons, and ugly black and green color schemes.
I'm curious how many posters here remember reading pages that looked like this: http://web.archive.org/web/19990429094022/http://www.appleinsider.com/ or this http://web.archive.org/web/20010207044233/forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi
I can't believe I was browsing these same forums over 6 years ago. I've been a lurker for the past couple years, but have always enjoyed the conversation. It's been fun to watch a new "generation" of Appleinsider members join in.
As for the the whole Applenova thing, I was a witness to the conflict that resulted in its creation, but always thought the whole thing was rather... juvenile. But it's good to see both communities thriving considering the state of apple now compared to just a few years ago.

ha...i wonder what my post count is here...did it reset to zero?...
and yes i am a pre blackout AI human that hasn't been here in a while...hoping to find why another site is down...likely tied to the soon to be demise of thinksecret i assume...
and i lurk here from time to time, but usually don't post...seems to be alot of overlap aways...and many post at both sites...
but i admit i 99% stay at the other site mostly because two apple nerd sites is harder to keep track of than one apple nerd site...and i have my scooter nerd site to visit and my nintendo wii nerd site to visit...so that limits me some...only so much nerdiness to go around
though i miss powerdoc and wish he would visit AN from time to time
as for the 30 something frat remark, eh, i'll let it pass as i'm well past my 30's (sadly)...
as for re-combining the two sites back into one...not a horrid idea...but it's not horrid having them split either...
eh, whatever will be will be...

Update:
I was having zero luck, despite flushing cache and rebooting.
Then I remembered a previous migration/blackout in 2005 which IIRC included editing my hosts file.
That, of course was pre-Tiger, and easier to modify back then.
Poking around in terminal and vim revealed that as well as blocking ads, I had hardcoded the old applenova IP to various domain names (.org, etc).
A bit of editing and sudo later, and presto... Intertubitude, dude.

How funny. I was on vacation in Switzerland during the DNS problems at AN, so I missed the reunion here at AI. (Can't really read AN or AI on my CrackBerry.) But I came here to check out Temporary Insanity while waiting for MWSF announcements.
Totally cool to see Dogcow post to the old post-Reality color scheme. Can't believe that I've been following Mac rumors for well over a decade now.
Time flies, and I've been focusing my sporadic reading and posting on AN. Due to the smaller membership, AN is just easier to keep track of. I consider both AI and AN as my virtual family. It's really nice to see so many old faces here.
Am into my thirties now too, with a lovely daughter age two and a half. Apple and Macs are cool, but family is even more important. Glad to see many work on the latter. ;)
