Looks like trouble to me:no:
This news is several weeks old, the Enterprise just arrived home in Norfolk with her carrier group.
Check out the leading picture and story! (http://www.navy.mil/)
The Esienhower and Big E (Enterprise) were conducting turnover, one carrier group was headed home, the other had just arrived on station.
Probably the same with the Iwo Jima and the Boxer, they are both LHDs (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/lhd-1.htm), large amphibious ships that carry Marines, landing craft and helicopters, but no jets; and head up amphibious groups. Likewise, they were most likely conducting turnover. Unless things have drastically changed in the 6 months since I retired, carrier groups and amphibious groups train and deploy together.
That said, it would be a convenient time for something to occur, before the homeward bound groups head out of the Gulf...if you are a conspiracy type person.

... large amphibious ships that carry Marines, landing craft and helicopters, but no jets; ...
Isn't the AV-8B Harrier a jet?

Isn't the AV-8B Harrier a jet?
Correct! :embarrass
Overlooked them, but I meant jets in terms of a carrier air wing of 60-80 planes, not the 8 or so harriers an LHD normally carries. Harries are great close support/CAP aircraft, but you're not going to make strategic air strikes with them...
