More change. Will we see a real change in direction and attitude?
-- President Bush has accepted the resignation of U.N. Ambassador John Bolton when his recess appointment expires, The Associated Press reports.

Bolton, IMO, was exactly what we needed to help reform the corrupt and impotent UN. I'm sad to see him go.

I agree- the UN needs some changes- sorely. Maybe Bolton could have been the tough guy to do it, but his credibility was politically undermined.
Whether that was wrong or right- I wonder where this will go?

Well, I feel similarly about the U.N, in that it is impotent and corrupt, but I am sure that we have vastly different reasons for coming to these similar conclusions.
I am relieved that Bolton has gone: his track record shows that he is not the most stable personality out there. Someone in such a senior diplomatic position should at least exhibit some degree of .... diplomacy!
With the United States' reputation for "promoting freedom" in shreds as a result of the last 5 years foreign (and to a lesser extent domestic) policy, it is most inappropriate for the likes of Bolton, who shares the same extremist viewpoints of the Neoconservative crew who got us into this sad and sorry state, to be in any public office.
His resignation will be for the good of all.

I'm also glad to see him go. The UN needs reform, but not by Bolton. He was there to do little more than forward the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld agenda.

Let me ask you....why shouldn't he do that? Other nations ambassadors do exactly that. I fail to see why we shouldn't have someone who promotes the current administration's agenda.

I have no problem with him promoting the administration's agenda. It is the agenda that I have problems with.

Well then, that's a different issue. But since you brought it up...what specifically do you take issue with as it pertains to the UN? Stopping Iran from aquiring nukes? Reducing the virulent anti-semitism present in the GA? Fighting UN corruption? Making sure UN resolutions actually mean something? You don't have to like Bush to agree with that.

Well- I can see that if you put a diplomat in to institute change, and he's completely disrespected by his own legislative branch- he'll get nowhere. But that's probably no one's fault save his own. We need someone who commands respect in there, and Bolton probably never commanded respect in his life.

From what I hear, he didn't command respect, he demanded it.

It's especially boo hoo when you demand respect and don't get it.

I know that whenever I need to get a bunch of difficult, quarrelsome people in line, my first thought is to find the most unstable belligerent asshole I can find, especially if he's generally viewed as a joke, to get the job done. Yessiree, that'll learn 'em. :D

Where is the concrete proof that they are 'acquiring nukes'. Link? Even if they were, do you think they would actually go ahead and use them? Where are all those who are so paranoid about a hardline Islamic regime headed by a nutcase, gone nuclear, when it comes down to Pakistan? There's the country which promotes Islamic militancy more than any other (except perhaps Saudi Arabia).

Resolutions? ha! How many resolutions re. Israel's actions have been passed by the UNSC, but roundly ignored and flouted with impunity?...many dozens in the last 45 years or so. Any other nation serially sticking the finger at the international community would have had sanctions imposed on them. at the very least.

Wait...hold on...
1. Iran is not trying to acquire nukes? You want a link? A LINK?
2. The UN favors Israel?

Something reliable, yes. There's plenty of accusations and supposition flying around, but no real smoking gun evidence
2. The UN favors Israel?
Not the UN, but the US. We veto anything that requests Israel to abide by international law, as is required of every other nation. Perhaps in any future reforms at the UN, the special privileges endowed on the 'superpowers', in posessing the sole power of veto... should be revoked. Perhaps the veto option should be abolished altogether.. this might help in making the UN more accountable.
