S.D. Sen. Tim Johnson Undergoes Surgery

This sounds like what could be a stroke. If this is as bad as at it sounds the bems will lose control of the senate before they even take over.
Bummer.

Yeah really. All I am hearing is the Senate, the Senate, the Senate. I mean, I realize the implications...but really. It's callous in the extreme. This is not the time for that type of talk. And that's coming from someone who's party would takeover control.

SDW, I think that's why this thread hasn't really gotten any action. I personally can't put a whole lot of thought into the issue because whenever I do I start to I feel, well, dirty.....

i hope he doesn't die too, but this this brings up an interesting and possible situation that could be played out. so quit being such pussies and let's talk about it.

Is it terribly inappropriate and insensitive of me to be imagining Senator Johnson in his hospital bed slurring out as best he can, "I don't want to go on the cart! I feel happy! I feel happy!"?

And imagining that it's Karl Rove pushing the cart?

yeah, but it's still funny.

so your the republican governor and johnson dies, do you appease the party and appoint a republican to take the place of a democrat senator? or you appoint another democrat and appease the voters that elected johnson in the first place? no easy choice there. either one could come back to bite you in the ass during the next election.

The play out is obvious. R-control of the senate. 2 more years of GW's bullshit. Direct WH involvement in the senate votes. Now lets stop callously disregarding humanity?

it may well play out that way, but i don't think it's as simple as you make it.

as to your last statement, who exactly is being callous? this is something that has happened in the past and could happen again. with the division in the senate being so close, this effects us all. ignoring it and refusing to talk about isn't going to change that reality.

I agree.
I hope he does not die either.
If he cannot serve, then the republican governor will appoint a new senator. I also wouldn't hope the person would die if he were a republican.

Not quite that bad -- at least, we'll still get nearly the same reduction, or lack thereof, in GW bullshit either way. Dems aren't in any danger of losing the House, so Bush no longer has his rubber stamp. The big loss is loss of control over the confirmation process, especially if any Supreme Court seats need to be filled. That, I admit, would suck greatly.

Other than that, since even with control of both houses Dems will have to contend with Presidential veto power, I don't think things would be much different on the legislative front having both houses or just one. House Dems would have to make pretty much the same compromises with a Rep Senate as they would have to make with Bush to get a bill through that won't be vetoed. House Dems could block Senate legislation that they didn't like by not entering into a joint resolution on such matters.

And the House all by itself has investigative power, and that's going to be important I think.

Agreed. This vulture-like thinking is morbid.

Geez they should place high-security, guards with M-16s around this guy. Wouldn't be suprised if Rove sent in a nurse with some pollonium 210 in a syringe or something else fatal...THE FATE OF THE COUNTRY, no WORLD, lies with this guy's health. LIVE Tim Johnson fucking live man! Talk about pressure to perform. If I were him I'd stay away from stairs, sharp objects, hell, I'd be bubble boy.

I think its morbid to refer to think and plan for this guy's death. Even if it aint as simple as I think, nothing we say here can actually whats gonna happen. All we have here is people hoping and plotting for what will happen in the senate's vacuum. Its callous because it diminishes human life.

as you say, we here have no real ability to effect what happens, so how is it possible for us to plot and plan? we can, however, discuss the possible ramifications of such actions of those that can effect the situation. i see nothing morbid about it. if you don't feel comfortable participating for personal reasons then that's unfortunate.

First, I don't appreciate the insult. Second, I'm really not following you. My party would takeover control and yet I'm clearly saying this kind of talk is not appropriate beyond perhaps a mention of what could happen. What do you mean I'd be saying the same thing? Does that mean I'd be talking about it more if I stood to lose rather than to gain something? I really don't see why that adds up.

but I love tossing down the jag bomb out here on the west coast and watchign people's mouths drop- then laugh. such an awesome insult.

Oh, it's a good insult, I agree. I just don't see why he lobbed it at me.

Sorry. I didn't realize you were so sensitive.
Anyway you insulted me on my post about Gingrich awhile back.
If you don't recall here it is.
