Now, where did I leave that $100 billion (http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/12/20/war.funds.ap/index.html)? It was here yesterday.

Tax dollars? Nah, that's the really cool part. Haven't you heard: Conservatives can cut taxes and increase spending, and it all just works out in the end.

"Republican leaders are encouraging Bush, who is facing a hostile Congress for the first time in his presidency, to oppose Democratic spending plans."
"Vetoing Democratic bills, said Toomey, would give Bush an opportunity ``to prove that the Democrats are the big spenders.''

I think you mean Republicans in Congress. "Conservatives" would actually cut spending along with taxes.

yes, real conservatives have been jumping ship for some time now. I'm not really sure what's next.

I'd like to know when real conservatives have done anything other than cut taxes and raise spending. Reagan: Cut taxes and raised spending. Gingrich: Cut taxes and raised spending. Bush: Cut taxes and raised spending. Where are these mythical beasts, the "real conservatives?"

Reagan came into office wanting to balance the budget but ended up accepting large deficits in order to outspend the Soviets on defense. If you listen to Reagan's speeches from the 60s and 70s, he was incredibly conservative fiscally. His "A Time for Choosing" speech, one that many consider to have launched his political career, went into detail about deficit spending and foreign debt. In CA he ordered a review of every government program for fiscal reasons, as soon as he entered office. He wanted to reduce the size of the federal government and cut non-defense spending. One can say he failed at that, but not he wasn't conseravtive.
Newt Gingrich was the Speaker when Congress passed Welfare reform and balanced the budget. Unless you're saying Clinton gets credit for that.
All that said, I do believe "real fiscal conservatives" are becoming a rarity. One of Rush Limbaugh's little gags lately has been a song parody called "Where Have All the Conservatives Gone"...a takeoff of "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone." My thinking is that it's Bush's brand of "big government conservatism" taking over the party. The recent election loss may lead to resurgence is conservative thinking though, as a good many Republicans believe the reason for the loss was related to them abandoning conservative ideals.
