No Smoking Please (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070110/ap_on_go_co/congress_smoking_1)

Congrats Mrs. Pelosi, it is well overdue and about time.

"The days of smoke-filled rooms in the United States Capitol are over," Pelosi said. "Medical science has unquestionably established the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke, including an increased risk of cancer and respiratory diseases. I am a firm believer that Congress should lead by example."

If she made Congress follow all the laws it passes instead of exempting itself, she might even get my vote... except I'm not in her district, and I'm not even in her part of the state.

However I might be willing to toss Mary Bono under the bus for her with enough reforms.

Definitely a move that should have been made a long time ago. I had my doubts about Pelosi as well (and still reserve some), but this is a good start.

Yes - it's a global movement in developed countries which are worried about their health bills (i.e. England's National Health costs and budget deficits) but still one which realises validly that fresh air is an endangered species and forcing someone else's cancerous smoke on a non-smoker is tantamount to anti-social.

I was travelling overseas last year; it's shocking how many youngsters (kids not old enough to register on Apple Insider) smoke. Everywhere in the cities, kids loiter and smoke. After hours, it was even more striking; only kids seem to hang around street corners and adults and any signs of adult authority seem banished. On the otherhand, spending days traversing China by smoke-filled buses and trains, I'm reminded of how fortunate I am to have fresh air at all.

The smoking ban in DC offices has been in effect since last April. Jan 2nd the ban extended into bars. Of course Congress exempted themselves. They've always acted liked this. I am sure they will put a smoking room in the Capital somewhere. They like their privilages, even if it is not good for them.

According to the news I saw last night, they are still allowed to smoke in their offices.
