View Full Version : Wolfowitz and his Iranian girfriend

Former Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18665386) announced his pending resignation as the President of the World Bank yesterday. He was under investigation for promoting his girlfriend, a financial expert at the World Bank. This strikes me as inconsistent to the point of bizarre: Here is a man who lives within a circle of elitists who are largely above and beyond the law, where unmitigated nepotism, privilege, mega-perks, and corrupt back door deals without fear of prosecution are all part of normal day to day life.. yet here is this well-connected icon getting called to the carpet over an infraction that pales into a insignificance compared with "business as usual".
Wolfowitz, an arch NeoCon hawk and a leading architect of the so-called "war on terror", (more accurately a never-ending war against a large section of the world's Muslim community), has a middle eastern girlfriend, Shaha Riza. Not only that, but she is IRANIAN (oops). Iran is a fullblown member of the Axis of Evil™ and the next target in the Neocon's series of recreational wars against the Muslim peoples of the world. Shaha Riza is an Arab. And she is also a Muslim and a feminist... :wow: It surely demonstrates that love can conquer all barriers.
Was "Wolfy" targeted because of her? If he had had a girlfiend of a religious orientation and racial type deemed more acceptable to Neocon and international banking circles, would the matter have been overlooked, with merely a quiet private "wrist slap"? Why all the baying for Wolfowitz's blood for doing "business as usual"? Considering the extraordinary financial irregularities at the Pentagon during and before Wolfowitz's tenure as DDS .. some $$2.3 "TRILLION of funds gone missing" (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/01/29/eveningnews/main325985.shtml).. one would have expected some kind of investigation after Rumsfeld disclosed this on September 10, 2001. Oh, good timing, Rummy... the matter was quickly forgotten after the events of the following day.
Have Rumsfeld Wolfowitz, Zakheim and the other leading Pentagon officials (and from previous administrations) been investigated for the missing $2,300,000,000,000? No. Will there be an inquiry? No. Will anyone be held accountable? No. It's business as usual, as predictable as the sunrise. But Wolfowitz gets the shaft for handing a little "candy" to his lover. Even though I depise the man's policies when he was with the Bush team, and he had a large part to play in the course of action that started the current debacle, I think he got a (relatively) raw deal at the World Bank.

Beat me to it! :D
IRT the missing money, it's unfortunate that this will go unpunished; but DoD is hardly the only part of the budget where funds go to an undisclosed place, just not normally at that large an amount....

Paul Wolfowitz cares about his hair! Paul Wolfowitz cares about his hair!
One of the architects of the invasion of Iraq cares about his hair! One of the architects of the invasion of Iraq is a prissy little narcissist! Therefore, the invasion of Iraq was fatally flawed!
I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, maybe somebody can help me out......

His girlfriend should be offered the job to head the world bank, since she is pretty high up in the hierarchy and got screwed (pun intended) out of her original job there. Based on the CNN article, all the people on the ethics committee were afraid of her, which is why Wolfowitz had to do any of the work of getting her a job elsewhere.
Basically I think that this whole thing was put into place (including the outplacement decision) by the Europeans as an attempt to wrest control of the bank away from the US. Even though the US pays for everything, they want to appoint the leadership of both the IMF and World Bank (instead of just the IMF like it is right now).

No, Europeans just think that Wolfowitz is a terrible manager. There is ton of US manager who would be OK for the job.

Then how come all the talk about "the US should no longer be able to pick the head of the world bank"? The Europeans basically manufactured this crisis, and are trying to capitalize on it as a bid for more power. Wolfowitz went to the ethics committee when he joined, and the ethics committee came up with the solution - little did he know that they were stabbing him in the back at the same time.

I doubt that europeans will lead the world bank.
And franckly Wolfowitz is a casting error. There is a unofficial agreement, that said, that you don't nominate someone against the advice of the others participants.
Bush nominated Wolfowitz against the will of europeans, and they were really pissed. In general, this kind of nomination is a question of consensus.
Bush, after firing Woflwowitz of his administration, nomitated to this job, just because he was is friend.

Which is probably why they stabbed him in the back like that - but I still think that the whole thing surrounding Wolfowitz's job loss was a political maneuver planned and entirely executed by the Europeans.

Of course you are right, if Wolfwotitz was more appreciated, this story would have been hidden. But the point, is this story is symptomatic of the way wolfowitz managed the bank : serving his own interest.
I have no doubt that the US admin will find a better guy for the job.

You are not understanding me. The Europeans would not have manufactured the situation, so there would be nothing to hide. They didn't like Wolfowitz, after he approached them asking what he should do about the potential conflict of interest, they set this whole thing up.
The bottom line is that you can't trust your co-workers when you work in these multi-national governmental organizations, as they will be out to push the agenda of their own country via office politics and backstabbing.

"PAUL Wolfowitz has really had a bad couple of weeks. He not only lost his job, he lost his girlfriend, too.
Wolfowitz, one of the architects of the Iraq war, was pushed out as president of the World Bank over a controversial pay and promotion package he arranged for his brunette girlfriend, Shaha Ali Riza.
Sources say Riza, a brilliant feminist with a promising diplomatic career, was upset by all the publicity and the implication that she was getting ahead with the help of a powerful man. "She was furious about the embarrassment," said one source." (http://www.nypost.com/seven/05232007/gossip/pagesix/pagesix.htm)

I see that Rep. Walter Jones (R, NC) is suggesting that Paul Wolfowitz should be installed as the Mayor of Baghdad (http://www.freedomsphoenix.com/Find-Freedom.htm?At=019346). We "own" that place now, courtesy of the NeoCons... perhaps Wolfy should see the fruits of the NeoCon labors first hand. I agree wholeheartedly.
