I am an immigrant and would like to put in my 2 c.

If we would establish offices in Mexico where people could receive free IDs to enter the US and can register without any fear it would be much cheaper than any other solution I have seen. These places would help people who look for workers recruit, a bit like a physical Monster.com. People who want to come can do so legally and the US would know their name and would know that they are here.

These registration station could also be established at Home Depots across the country. We could at least get a data base of people who are here. Their status would not change but there presence would at least be known which in my theory is the first step to resolving the issue.
As incentive ID holders will receive discounts on fees when they apply for legal status.

To force registration: Eliminate cash sales of gasoline.

I was afraid of deportation for 10 years. I had applied for legal status but the INS lost my paperwork twice!!
Finally 3 lawyers and $ 7,000 later I got my Green Card (which is pink). I also had paid in excess of $ 30,000 taxes before I became legal.

Deportation is more likely if you leave some issues unresolved in your home country. i.e. A British friend of mine was deported because he failed to pay child support to his ex in GB.
