View Full Version : Who is using exclusively Mac OS X on their Mac?

I have been since Mac OS X 10.1 came out. I installed it and haven't even booted back into Mac OS 9.2.1. Classic works fine for me too.
What's your experience?

My only experience with X so far has been playing with it at the local Apple Store. <POST STUFFING>
I'll be getting it for Christmas. The true of sign of the young geek.

At work, aye.
At home, must still use Office, but that shall change in a matter of days.
Huzzah!
I use X *almost* exclusively. I would use it 24/7 if I could but...
no SCSI CDR support no RCA video capture or output support (ATi XClaim 128VR card) Final Cut Pro
other than rebooting for those few functions, I'm X-all-the-way.

Have 10.1 running on my iBook a WallStreet PB and the two PMG4s we use for web design.
The webserver (until I get Lasso 5/Apache all figured out) our FileMaker servers and our two "print" design machines are still running 9.1 - 9.2.1
I couldn't be happier, really, with 10.1
Stable, fast and beautiful.
Much more usable than 9.x was at its prime already.
Even on my puny 128 meg iBook it's usable, though I would like more ram.
I love it.

The funny thing is that my younger brother has a DP G4/500 with 2GB RAM and LIVES in 9.2.1. I can't understand it!

I have 10.1 on my iBook and haven't booted into OS 9 for about a month. I use Classic a lot still, but that should pass soon.

scsi support seems to be on the way.
At work, I sometimes use OS X with classic apps:
Outlook Express Adobe Photoshop/ImageReady/Illustrator Dreamweaver Other gizmos (drop•rename, personal droplets, etc.)
BUT at home, i'm using exclusively Mac OS X... too bad for thoses classic apps I was used to.

I use it quite a bit, but if I really want to get stuff done, I have to boot back into OS 9.2. 10.1 is still a little too laggy for me, but it's coming along great!

What's the point of having 2 GB RAM then? Mac OS 9.x doesn't recognize it!
Yes - I'm in OS X full time, using classic for such app as NTK, of course!

Two apps that are stopping me to use OSX full time
Photoshop
Final Cut Pro
After Effects is okay under Classic but of course if the native version comes I will get it anyway ;)

I am using OS X exclusively on my iMac (1999) and iBook (2001). I was only using Classic for support of my Epson printer. Well, now that Epson has come around, I don't even need Classic!
I'm even considering Office v.X, but AppleWorks is fine for now.

JWPepper if the Epson SCSI scanner you have is a perfection 1200S it looks like its never going to be supported in OSX,that is what I have. The drivers are actually written by Adaptec and Epson is blaming them.Needless to say I am pissed at Epson and I am looking at other companies to supply my next scanner

Been using OS 10 exclusively since the Public Beta came out-- when I reinstalled 10.1 back in October I didn't even load a copy of Classic onto my machine!

Actually, Mac OS 9.2.1 seems to 'recognize' the 2 GB of RAM fine. Whether it can use that much is another story.
I forgot to post my experience. Everything's running great on my iBook and 10.1 is SOOO much better than 10.0.x.
I'm generally using Mac OS X full-time. It runs very well on my PowerBook G4.
What I'm really excited about is not using Classic so much soon... In a few days Office v. X will be here :) .

Up until about 2 weeks ago i was using X exclusively (since the release of 10.0).
But for the last 2 weeks i've been working on a website and have been using PS and GoLive, they both work in classic, but i needed to get a lot of work done, and classic isn't that snappy on my 333 iMac.
PS Its great to be back here at AI!

I am. I have been since 10.0.3. I rarely even use classic. At work... that's a different story.

When I first got X I put it on my Mom's iMac. A day later after getting the hang of the updates, installs, how to tweak things, apps and software out there, I installed it on mine. I've only booted back into OS 9 once, and that was to use Norton. :) Well actually twice but that was a weird accident (heh). Yay OS X!

The only problem with that is that you can't print.

For the last few weeks (since 10.1) I have been using OS/X exclusivily on my Ti G4 with the exception of office. I'm changing that though since I just ordered my copy of Office v.x
I do all my software development, documentation, etc. on it!! Very happy. :D

Can't do anything I need to in X.
X.1 Looks pretty and all but with no Protools (therefore no audio) and no aurora fuse video support (apparently that's never going to happen) I'm going to be in 9 for a quite a while yet.

Here at home on my iMac, I've been using OS X for about 4-5 months. Needless to say, once 10.1 came out and X finally felt like a "real", complete OS, it's all I run on both my home iMac and my G4 at work.
Of course, at work, using QuarkXPress, Photoshop, etc., I'm in Classic quite a bit, but everything else is in X (surfing, e-mail, iTunes, various utilities and apps).
Same for at home, although with Illustrator 10 now out, I hardly EVER launch Classic at home.
I am, however, waiting for a font management utility that's as transparent and easy to set up and use as ATM Deluxe. That's the only thing I'm missing right now.

I would say that I use OS X 10.1 in spirts. Because I do a lot of work that requires OS 9.2.1 natively, I go back and forth. Because a video project may take time to complete, I will use OS 9.2.1 almost all the time. Final Cut Pro won't open in Classic mode.
I think that I have been torn apart by the jilting experience of having to adapt to the small things of both OS's. For example, in IE for OS 9, download manager is Cmd-M, whereas on OS X, it's command-4. Also, creating a new folder in the finder, requires shift in addition to the cmd-N.
Otherwise, I can't disparage OS X, because it is so promising. Yeah, it could be a tad faster. I'm running a PBG4 at 400MHz, and I would say that OS X runs equally as well on my iMac 500 at work. Although I see slightly more of the rainbow cursor on the iMac.

OS 9 about 30%
OS 10.1 about 70% of the time
9 for games, SETI and other things.
I love how the DVD player in X is better than 9.....no more audio sync probs. :)

I've been in OS X 99% since 10.0.4, booting into 9 for Oni once every few weeks, or to print at photo quality (the OS X Epson driver couldn't do that without introducing lines until 10.1). I only have to start Classic for AGFA ScanWise, and I'm looking forward to eliminating that.
10.1 is getting awfully close to done. I'm heartened by something Andrew Welch said on the MacNN boards: There's room yet for another speed boost on the order of 10.0 -> 10.1. By spring OS X should be in full blossom.

I'm using it 95% of the time. My two remaining holdouts are VPC and SPSS. I'm moving to R for my statistical needs (I think; the learning curve is pretty steep) and once I do, I won't need VPC except to transfer docs to and from my Psion (VPC test drive doesn't support USB).
Now if I could stop using classic all together I'd be ecstatic. I swear it takes about 5 minutes to launch on my ibook 500 (384 megs). I don't know what the problem is. I reformatted my 9.2 partition all to no avail. Maybe I need to tweak some extensions? Any suggestions?

X exclusively on my iBook 500, installed without classic and it runs very well. I'm having great fun discovering neat shareware/freeware apps for doing day to day stuff.
If you are going the X only route then go the whole hog and do without classic, it means you HAVE to work around not having the big apps (photoshop, office e.t.c)

I have been using 10.1 on my iMac DV 400 with 384MB RAM since it came out, and haven't rebooted except for the updates from Apple that required it.
It has been working pretty well for me, and although it still shows some shortcomings, and is not as fast as one might like on this machine, I have been pleased with my experience. The cable modem works fine, as does my Epson printer, so there are no peripheral problems, and I use Word 98 without any problems for word processing.
What I would like to see though is a better email client. I have been using Mozilla .95, which works great, except that it is very sluggish on this machine. Mail.app always crashes on this machine (seems to work fine on some, not on others - weird), so I would like to see a client with IMAP functionality that is a little more responsive than Mozilla.

I'm using OS X 99% of the time, and look forward to zotting OS 9 ASAP (I'm using a Rev. A Tangerine iBook, and I haven't upgraded the drive from its measely 3GB default) to make way for more room on my system. If only my Que! USB burner was supported under OS X, then I'd really be in business...

I use OS X.1 about 90% pf the time. The only thing hlolding me back are a couple of games. Like...Elite Force (which is carbonzed but the patch isn't out yet), Rogue Spear and Total Annhilation. Also I prefer to use my soundblaster under 9 and photoshop.

I've been using OS X nearly 100% since DP4. I messed up my OS 9 partition when I installed DP4, and being lazy I could never be bothered to reinstall it until OS X 1.0 came out.
I have OS 9 installed on my iBook, but have never used it - except for when it booted into OS 9 when it first started up.

Been using OSX since Beta and have booted less and less into OS9 with each passing week. Now the only time that I boot into OS9 is to clear out trash whenever I can't get rid of it in OSX due to permissions issues ;)
Is it just me or does OS9 feel somewhat 'fragile' when you are running it instead of OSX? Anytime I run it I feel like it is going to lock up on me at any time.

I only boot 9 to play Diablo II and Deus Ex, the first is getting carbonized so that will be fixed soon [along with StarCraft] and the second never will be but I'll get over it. OS X rules, to be productive I boot into it, to play two games I use 9.

Switched to X full time* last Sept, when I got home from Paris with the Beta still hot in my hands.
* excluding UT.
I got a digital audio g4 466 with 640mb of ram and used os x.1 ever since it arrived (and betas) i only do casual downloading of mp3s n such also browsing. I really wish Photoshop was carbonized though and dreamweaver, i guess that is the only thing that stoped me from trying to learn to use photoshop more. Also X.1 crashed only once on me for i have no idea reason. Other than that i havent had to restart because of crash or wahtever, only installing itunes 2, new HD, updates..

This morning I did a clean install of OS X, sans OS 9, and I am currently running X-native apps only.
But, that's only because for the next three months I will only be surfing the Net, and using Office X. And hopefully, if occasion arises, I will not need to manipulate images beyond the capabilities of GraphicConverter ( or that Photoshop will be out by late January)...
I'm thrilled to have not-installed Classic, but if it wasn't for a busy, law-school addled schedule, I would still use 9.2.1 occasionally.

I use it as much as I can but I need sometimes to go back on 9.2.1 for Photoshop, Quark use... also Toast can't burn with my QPS QUE! 12x10x32x firewire so I need OS 9.
I forgot, games like Unreal Tournament and Diablo2LoD require me to use 9.2.1

I had been using it exclusivley since the original public beta, but I have gotten so frustrated with its slowness and overall lack of being finished. Perhaps its my older rev d iMac, but in any event. I have rediscovered my love for the Mac in 9.2.1. Looks like OS9 til I get a new Mac whenever that is.

I will be using 10.1 on my ibook to come 100%.
But on my g4 533 we can't because Quark is not native, there is no ATM to group fonts, no photoshop, and no outlook express right now.
On the imac I have 9.2.1 installed because my dad doesn't know osx and he needs his smartmedia ZiO adapter to work.

Wow, I'm feeling really guilty right now! I have to admit I use 9.2 most of the time. I go into X for a day or 2, but for some reason I end up going back to 9 and forgetting about 10. I'm not even sure why that is exactly...
I'll boot into X today and see how long I can keep it there...

I've been using 10.1 exclusively while running Outlook Express, PhotoShop and GoLive in Classic with 10.1 apps for everything else.
My iMac has been running 10.0.4 since the patch came out and up until yesterday it had been up for 146 days. Late last night in a fog I accidently restarted it while trying to put it to sleep via the Apple menu. (grrrr) time to upgrade it to 10.1 now.
My iBook has been restarted once since the intro of 10.1 (to apply the 10.1.1 patch). Sleep is so cool. My iBook sleeps sometimes 7 hours before I remember to plug it in.
Unfortunately, 10.1.1 has made classic apps pretty flakey. They quit unexpectedly without killing the Classic.app and they won't stay open when clicked on again. Takes several tries to start the os9 app again. Please Adobe ship GoLive and PhotoShop NOW!!!!
