How about icons for apps that have OS X native versions, but for some reason, their icons is still a 32x32, ugly pixelated thing?

Limewire and DiskTracker are two that spring immediately to mind. Maybe they've corrected the problem by now, but at last look, they both had old-style, pixel-based icons, even though the app itself was OS X native.

What do you use to do OS X icons, because I think I'd like to dabble in it. Iconographer? Or do you use Iconfactory's thing?

'Scates, you can just use Photoshop and IconComposer (part of DevTools), if you know how to get the alpha (which I bet you do so I'll shut up).

Also Mikey already has made a LimeWire icon, it's the nicest one I've seen. Well, it's also the only one I've seen. :) I just wish it were more Aqua-like.

As for what icons I would like, ehh.. I would like to see a nicer Terminal icon. Like one with the new LCD displays, not the really old (tripod-era) CRT ones as it is now. I should just do it myself, but I'm lazy.

what do you mean my you wish my LimeWire icon was more aqua-ish? Like gelly like?

That Terminal idea is a good one!

I have been trying to do apps that are OS X native but have ugly icons Like i have done LimeWire, Caracho, AIM, SerialReader :D , and now Stuffit and all its Documents. And I am going to keep doing more :)

I use Iconographer I like it the best as a last step. I draw all my icons in PhotoShop 6.

Yes. Aqua-like. Not just plain vector-drawn-like. But I'm talking about a whole new icon, like a plug in the original LimeWire icon. A green Aqua-like plug. Your current LimeWire icon is nice, but it wouldn't lend itself to being Aqua candy-ized, I don't think, due to the small size of the wire and the texture of the lime. So basically, ignore my silly suggestion. :)

I also like your carracho icon but it is so close to the original. Also your stuffit is nice, but I've already replaced mine with a slightly more colorful, and interestingly-angled icon from http://icons.cx/ , it does have the same "picture" in the icon though. If I hadn't already changed it to that one, I'd say yours is a huge improvement on Stuffit's ugly-tastic icon! Speaking of ugly-tastic, I'm going to make a replacement for the ScanWise icon--the driver software for Afga scanners. :)

Icons I don't want to see: animé; application icons; Star Trek; hard drive icons; automobiles; lame celebrities

Icons I would like to see: fun, wacky, whimsical icons like Gort's icons and Perfect Yosemite icons web page; Bloom County; Looney Tunes; naked chicks; wildlife.

hi,
i run Xicons.com... i'll be reading this thread for some public opinion on what to post and what to avoid. The good submissions are now coming in faster than i can post them so I have to pick and choose.

I do have a few sets of adobe icons laying around, but haven't posted them because there are already several online. But I'll put them up this week if there really is a desire for them.

Any other comments on what you would like to see posted and what should be avoided?

Jeff

For my stuff it icon I was trying to follow the aqua guide lines for a ulitly icon. Those gidelines are a stait on angle for your object and use grey colors not bring colors.

As for your lime wire idea, I do not feel that every icon in OS X needs to be aqua (candy like). I did AIM and Carracho like that beacuse they both have very recignizible logos (running man and star) just like IE. That logo was a simple 1 color shape so I decided to make it aqua. :)

Thanks for all the sugestions

Icons I don't want to see: anime, stupid hard drive replacements, star trek, anime, icons with thick, ugly black lines around everything, star wars, anime, etc. ;)

Icons I would like to see more of: food items, sets of unique color variations on system icons (without other gaudy modifications), The Sims icons, other really nice ones like Glasz Icons and Polished Stone.

But overall, xicons really has a ton of great icons! You just need to weed out all of that anime, and keep it far, far away. :) Congratulations on a great site.

I don't like the anime icons either, but there are a lot of people who specifically request them. Xicons' audience is very diverse and I try to make something available for everyone. Not everyone is going to like each icon set, but the idea is to provide enough choice so that there is something for everyone.

My main complaint with other icon sites is that there is not enough variation. You generally get one style of icon and if you don't like it, you're out of luck. That's why i think posting submissions is better than having one or a few icon designers in house making the decisions of what people should like.

I'll certainly keep everyone's comments in mind though when I post. I've already cut down tremendously on the number of "clip-art" icons posted because most people find them somewhat useless and generally boring. There are of course exceptions to that rule though.

I'd like to see the following icon sets:

NFL football helmets ( all of them, not just the most popular teams )

Baseball and BasketBall logos

Complete OSX system sets

A good complete Star Wars related one.

I'll post more if I think of any.

I can understand. Variation is a good thing.

This kind of brings me to the conclusion that almost all of the little sections for icon types are just a mixed bag. It would be nicer if you had more categories, like http://macdesktops.com/ . More, as well as more descriptive categories make it easier to find icons, perhaps sub-categories would be a good concept as well. You could even cross-reference things if applicable. Also what would be nice is if you had numbered pages so you could go between pages and back, and have some idea how many icons are in each category, how many pages, etc. Not hard to do at all with PHP or the like. You've got a great idea, and lots of great icons. *thumbs up*

Finder icon replacements. Sorry guys, but just like I think a find (aka, "search") should be added to the FINDer, I think an icon that suggests finding stuff should be part of the app.

Replacements for the Three-Bears Cottage "Home" icon.

TONS of folder icons. I'd like to use those like crazy, though apparently I have no imagination for creating them given that I tried using that Folder Icon shareware app and came out with all of 1 new icon.

it may seem trivial enough... but I haven't been able to find a single Yahoo! Messenger icon. I found an alphabet icon set at Xicons (love that place) and just copy and pasted a "Y" for the moment... but it looks a bit... plain.

Dammit, I had a whole list of ideas, now I forgot. Grrr.

I personally hate the current hard drive icons. I have downloaded two from xicons that feature the 9 icon for my os9 volume and the current X finder icon, but I would love to see a nice drive icon with 9 over it, casting a shadow on the drive, and X doing the same.

Actually there are a lot of things like that bugging me about the current design. I plan on rebuilding both the navigation and the look and feel of the site in the near future. And the issues you bring up are on the top of my list.

Unfortunately I'm a little pressed for time lately. I've got two big websites under construction with virtually the same deadline. But you can expect to see a major rework of Xicons just after the first of the year.

Any other suggestions while I'm listening?

I'd be more than happy to feature tutorials on Xicons if some of you are willing to write them. i simply don't have time for it until maybe february, and they would be better coming from the community anyway. There are several different techniques in use out there...

Hey Mike, how about a group of document icons to replace all of Apple's? This would include text, clipping, plain, all of Preview's, QuickTime's, iMovie's, and any others based on Apple's "sheet of paper" icon. Why? IMNSHO Apple's "document" icon looks bad at smaller sizes (I have my icons set at 32x32). Even if the border was just a little darker and discernable, that would make looking at them so much easier on my eyes.

Of course, I don't actually expect you to pull off a big task like this (but, please, you're welcome to if you want!! :) ); I just had to voice my opinions on these icons. Ick.

Some of the icons that I would really like are:

a fish tank (aquarium)
a redwood tree or grove
a good icon that depicts a download folder
a roll of film
a match book
greenbacks (money)
a backpacking backpack
the earth
something that depicts school (a rubix cube is what i use now)
a book stack (shelf)
a phonograph
a movie projector that is projecting something

Hope that gives you some ideas. I am always looking for icons that fit on general folders like -> random;downloads;school;video;audio; finance;educational;outdoor stuff

ICQ (the default one is uuuuuuugly)
Carracho Server (So it matches your spiffy Carracho client one)
Hotline Client
Hotline Server
Sherlock (A cartoony aqua version would be nice since the default is rather photographic)
Haxial Client
Haxial Server (If you don't know what Haxial is, it's a Hotline/Carracho-style of program which is pretty decent. Check it out at www.haxial.com)

The graphical quality of your icons appears to be improving rapidly, but I have two gripes:

2. The Photoshop icon gives the impression that it is a tool for sucking blood out of people's eyes.

Those are nice concepts but you really need take advantage of 32 bit masks. You should mask the screen shots in PhotoShop. And I think you can make them alot bigger. But nice work other than that. :)

thanks for all the complements :D

I think I understand. I feel really bad asking you all these questions. Anyway, I do have a few more if you don't mind. You made the shadow yourself I'm assuming? How did you go about doing it? And umm, oh gosh I feel stupid.....where's the masking option in photoshop? last question is, how did you make the sides so smooth? I always get jaggies no matter what, I know these are stupid questions but I just started using photoshop.

P.S. THANK YOU!!!

I worked(practiced) alot last night, I think I am getting the idea. Some of tose above questions still remain, but the one I am really having trouble with is getting transparancy to work under Icoographer. It seems like everytime I transfer the shadow part over it become solid again. I can't figure it out.

Yeah, great icons Mike I think I will use the blue Carracho server one for my client : it is so more 'Aqua'

[quote] sets of unique color variations on system icons (without other gaudy modifications)

yes, I fully agree with that.

And what about :
2 sets of installers folders icons (1 for OS 9 apps installers and one for OS X)
1 folder for fonts
1 favorites icon (don't like the heart at all)
1 stylish launcher icon (something with 'start' on it or a start button) to access to apps aliases
1 folder network apps
1 folder design apps
1 folder games
1 folder utilities
1 folder office apps
1 folder demos
1 folder downloads

the carracho server icon is great. I store only a few icons in my dock, and they are mostly blue themed: the Finder, Mail.app, iTunes, AIM and IE. BUT i used to have this orange aqua icon, but now blue icon.

PS<<> I got a little shock after licking the icon on my screen. ouch

Michaelm-I love your icons! I'm so jealous of anyone that can draw...

If you had the time I was wondering if you can come up with one for Age of Empires II. Just crossed swords or anything medevial would be great-the games icon doesn't show up at all for me.

That's a good question actually. So far I haven't received any over at Xicons or I would have posted them. Anyone willing to whip up a set?

It is night 5 and still no icons, and it would be easy. Make one flame, one menorah, and copy the flames. Maybe add a dredal here and there along with some latkes.

and we've got a happy hannukah! :D
