Finder Changes in 10.1.1

I've noticed one thing new about the finder in 10.1.1:

Arrange your drives on desktop by name (turn them off and on again or something) when the dock is on the bottom, then, move the dock to the right, and the drives get out from under the dock, moving a column over to the left.

Kinda nifty.

I have noticed it's quite a bit faster at drawing on the screen. Resizing is also noticeably faster. I didn't really think the update would have any speed improvements. I am glad I was wrong.

Finder does seem a bit snappier. But, then again, I just optimized with Norton and DiskWarrior. I guess I'll never know...

It suposidly "adds support for more digital cameras'"but it removed support for mine. A Canon Digital Ixus, I had to hack the .plist so image capture would recognise that it is the same as a US Canon Digital Elph.
Glad I made a back up of my hacked file.

I haven't noticed much of a difference on my AGP G4, but things were pretty snappy to begin with. I notice that the Finder still cannot recall specific window size and column width settings. You still have to re-set everything when you open a new Finder window...

...don't use SMB, WebDAV so I don't know to what extent that has been improved.

Not sure what kind of "USB and Firewire improvements" have been made. All I know is Epson still hasn't released the drivers for the Perfection series office scanners. My C80 office printer seems to work pretty well though.

Wacom still needs to work on their Intuos 2 driver...they basically grafted the old one onto an OS X winow bar. Pressure sensitivity calibration doesn't seem to work that well yet.

Will try burning a CD later today to see if that's been sped up even more under iTunes 2. I already noticed a big difference between burning discs from v1.x and v2.

Instead of starting yet another 10.1.1 thread I am posting my finding here

I found they finally fixed the window size bug. Where the window was taking up un-needed space. You know where you had a bunch of white space.. but when you tried to get rid of it the scroll bars would appear.

Unless you have "snap to grid" enabled, then it works on all but the left edge. And it still isn't smart enough to eliminate white space on the left and top, regardless of where the original icons were.

grover mine does. The problem most people are having is they add something to a folder in ROOT then log back into their regular login,, however root has that folder it will be like that permanently cause root owns it now. All you have to do is change permissions. I know NT does this too because anytime the server admin re-installs the Front Page extensions (which is all the time for some reason) I lose my permissions for my FTP directory and I have to email him and tell him to reset the folder permissions. What a moron.

10.1.1 Finder remembers all of my settings, except for that damned toolbar. It's also supposed to resolve some of the owner issues that 10.1 had, but I haven't had any problem since 10.0.4.

Apple has root turned off by default. The average user wont see/need it.

Not to worry Grover hun, the admin user is little more than a normal user that has access rights to a few more folders than a normal one, and is in the Sudoers file (you can temporarily use root priveledges for installs, etc).

Apple has wisely hid root from the lUsers, protecting the odd /etc from the rm -r

Actually you can activate root using Netinfo Manager.

NetInfoManager, the most user-unfriendly utility available in OS X. I'm not a UNIX geek, but I am not a novice either and I can tell you every time I try making system-level changes using NIM, something gets fooked up.

Does anyone know how to change column widths in OS X 10.1.1?

Back in the public beta, the columns would change width depending on the width of the window. Very slowly, though.

Update: the column and list view resizing isn't faster than icon resizing, simply a placebo effect on top of the fact that the two view modes now resize reasonably. There's just the usual split-second delay between dragging the resize widget and the window tagging along for the ride.

Jutus, try those little ribbed thingies at the bottom of the column dividers. I read somewhere that you can make them do additonal tricks by using a modifier key when you click on them.

Dragging the column widget (under the vertical scroll widget in each column) will resize all the columns together. Option-dragging the widget will change only that column's width. Double-clicking the widget resizes the columns to fit. Option-double-clicking resies only that column to fit.

(FWIW, IMO the option-click and default click behavior should be reversed.)
