View Full Version : Easter eggs!

As someone with fond memories of the egg-stravagant Iguana flag easter egg in System 7 (hey, you could change the direction of the wind and everything! - maybe I'm just easily pleased), I have noticed a sad decline in the numbers and quality of easter eggs in subsequent versions of the Mac OS. Okay, so deleting them may have made the system more stable and less buggy (boring! :D ) but it's just not as much fun! And to date I have managed to uncover a grand total of zero easter eggs in OS X. Am I missing something?

There's one I know of, I dont know if it qualifies but...there is a dogcow picture hidden in a system file.

I think when Steve Jobs came back to Apple he banned easter eggs.

If you hold down Option in the About iTunes window, it reverses the credits.

What have we become?!
Maybe Steve is trying to keep our software smaller than Microsoft's... I heard at one point there was a flight simulator on MS Excel. A whole flight simulator! Maybe the reason XP is so big is that microsoft included a Monopoly easter egg in their company.

But still I miss it! I hope the Yak is still in FCP when it's X native. Ah the endless times I have spent summoning the yak...

I know! Easter Eggs are funny and interesting. Silly Apple, trying to take all of the fun out of the Mac OS.

Hmm, yes, just like the sig nazis trying to take all of the fun out of signatures... Coincedence, or.. not?

To Lure the most wonderful beast from hiding ye must follow these steps...

ctrl (or right)-click the grey field just above the frame-counter in the canvas window.

A window will pop up saying "I'm not that easy"

Select it a few times until you get the menu that says "Call the Yak".

Select it and the yak will appear from the right-end of your screen chatting away.

If you are prepared with the knowledge of a dork ye shall be rewarded with laughs O' Plenty

I wouldn't exactly call it an egg since Steve has shown it off to crowds multiple times. ;)

I have been UNABLE to summon the Yak upon my screen.

Am I right-clicking above the left or right counter? When I tried it, it didn't do anything, or I got close enough to the tab to have it bring up the "close window" option.

I wish to summon the Yak. Please help. :p

Another feature of the OS X dock that I have not seen mentioned and is not really an easter egg, but here goes...

Press and Hold shift and then click on the divider of your dock. THen drag the doc to the side you want it on. No menus required. I thought it was pretty cool. :)

but Quark 4 does have a crazy alien thing. To delete a text box or something like that, type shift, option, apple, K and an alien will walk out and shoot it. Occasionally an even bigger alien will come out and blow up the smaller one. crazy.

Here's a sort of easter egg, but it's not public. In the Disk Copy that comes with 10.2, whenever it's active a dog cow spins in the Dock. I assume this will be replaced with different pictures (right now it's about 10 TIFFs) for the final. I think they should leave it as the dog cow. :)

<a href="http://www.gac.edu/~jwangen/fcpyak.mov" target="_blank">Click here to see the Yak in action!</a>

FYI, at the beginning, you see the menu that comes up. I clicked on the right side and the box opened to the left.

I only got the first 4 messages, but they go on for a long time. :)

Clicking or moving the mouse scares him away, which is why he left.

go to a terminal session,
type: bill gates

funny.

Don't know if it classifies as an easter egg, though.

Is the Dogcow still pixelated or has he gotten a facelist? If he's different, could you post one of the pictures?

Shift alone is sufficient.

I just took the TIFFs and made them into an animated GIF (obviously). I think they are just frames from a QTVR from a while back.
