DIY Time Capsule Alternative

I'm not a tech head by any stretch, but I was wondering what it is that stops someone simply from attaching a wireless usb adaptor to an external hard drive and picking this up on airport.

The other solution, I thought, would be to get a cheap ol' base station from ebay (between £25 and £40) and attach a drive to the usb port.

The idea of the Time Capsule is really attractive but the price hike from £199 to £329 just for an extra 500GB is, to me, quite frankly an absolute bloody liberty.
