*WARNING* version 2.0.2 will no longer allow original iPhone (non-activated) an iPod

I have both the 3G iPhone and the original iPhone

I saw today that there was an update for the iPhone 3G - I downloaded it -- and it seems 'snappier'

But the problem is


I also did the 2.0.2 update to my original iPhone

Apple and AT&T had said that you could continue to use the original iPhone as an iPod / and get on the web with WiFi

Is this no longer the case?

As with 2.0.2 the phone says it needs plugged into iTunes with or with out a sim card :???::err:

SIde question - how did you get it to work as an iPod? I get that even with 2.01/2.00
