Am I the only person who is being afflicted by frequent application stalls, hangs, finder quits?

Granted, my system probably isnt in the best of health, but could it be truly this bad? Perhaps a clean install is in order, can I clean install my "system" folder without wiping out my hard drive?

I have had alot of 'weird' things happen in Jag. Although scrolling, etc is better, the system has lost a good bit of responsiveness (eg click a button...wait...wait...). This is on several different Macs with either a clean or archive install. Some of them are a bit crash-happy as well.

I must have been forced to reboot (the hard way, ctrl-cmd-power) over 5 times in the past few days.

It seems Jaguar is still very much lacking in networking (a lot of hangups happen there) and dial-up, but out-of-the-blue hangups have occurred as well, where I couldn't really pinpoint some reason.

Hmmm... I experienced one kernal panic in OSX 10.1, but have had no application or OS crashes since installing Jaguar. Must be luck I guess... :D

yes, boot from the 10.2 cd, and as install choose "Archive" (or something like that, it's the 2nd option).

this will keep your user, but install a new system folder.

Yes, me too, I'm experiencing strange behaviors in Jaguar.

-Scrolling some finder's windows using the arrows is sometimes jerky.

-Sometimes (not too often), the Finder doesn't show dark the selected icons on the desktop. I mean, I may select an item on the desktop and doesn't get it dark, like if it wasn't selected. Annoying.

-Sometimes, the Finder suddenly quit and restart for no apparent reasons.

-Sometimes, doing a search in the Finder doesn't work, or make the Finder to quit and restart.

-The key commands for the menus and windows cycling (ctr-m and ctrl-w), as selected in the keyboard preferences, doesn't work all the times. I have to restart the user session to make them back to normal.

-Once (and only once), all the OS hard crashed (freeze). Force-quit wasn't working at all. This occured while I opened a wrong document (a QT music file) with TextEdit ! TE opened the file, showing a lot of garbages, and after I closed the document, everything frosted. I had to manually restart the machine. I didn't tried to reproduce the bug.

These problems are showing on a clean install OS X 10.2.1, on a new DDR 867 MHz with a full GB of ram.

Because of these, I'm a bit disapointed about OS X. It is not as strong as Apple is saying.

Been using Jaguar on my new 17' iMac for almost 3 weeks. Haven't had any hard crashes of the system. Had a program freeze up a few times, but I was able to force quit fine. Then relaunch the application. No restart required. I couldn't do that too often in OS9. My only complaint is the cursor will sometimes jump to one of the corners when I'm moving he mouse.

I installed Jag on launch day and I haven't seen a crash or kernel panic yet...

on august 23rd I clean installed jag on my QS867, and update installed on our imac dv 450 and have not had any problems with either computer.
It has been the smoothest transition ever, a real pleasure.

Cylon, your jumping cursor is probably related to the texture under your optical mouse, and not to the OS. It's only an optical thing on your desk. Change the mouse pad.

I haven't really crashed system wise at all, but damn is iChat buggy! I can't believe they released it the way it is.

I haven't had any stability problems with Jaguar. Inititally I had some slow startup issues going but I cleared those up by shutting of ethernet (because I don't use it) and adjusting my Jaguar drive to be the Master (it was the Slave before and I didn't even realize it). Boot times have significantly improved....

I've had a few apps crash on me but not Jaguar.

Uh.
I think if people would mention what machine they were running, specs, ram, hd, strange software (esp haxies) that they are running - it might help us get a better idea of why people are having problems.

Cause if you're runnin OSX on a upgraded G3 installed over the top of an old copy of OS9 with a whole ton of weird haxxies running - yeah. No kidding youre crashing.

LUCKY ME!!!! (SO Far!)

I read all these posts and think how lucky I really must be! I am yet to ever experiance a single Kernal Panic in either 10.1 or 10.2, I have only ever restarted twice in 10.2 and the only serious problem I have occurs only on one of my computers where Photoshop unexpectactly quits.. (Always before I save anice big project too)

The only other problems I have is where the screen doesnt refresh lines of texs so you get like three lines of text in word all on top of each other!

I have experienced two problems in OS X since I started using it and they both involve Microsoft products.....Word and Explorer.

In talking with others and well as in my own experience, I have an opinion on Jag (or other OSX) performance.

Unfortunately, a lot of us are running Beta versions of various programs (often that's the only thing that's avail for OSX) and even some of the non-beta apps should probably still be considered Beta. This, combined with the fact that many 3rd party programmers are still learning Cocoa APIs, results in some marginal code.
I believe that this may cause a lot of the program hangs, unexpected quits, etc.
Fortunately, time should fix most of these problems (at least with reputable programmers, who will FIX their apps, rather than just PATCH them.) Problem is, I am an extremely impatient man (just ask my children).

On a side note... while I can cut the non-apple apps some slack, I sure would have expected better performance from Apple itself (my problems have been with networking - though Jag seems to have fixed those).

So if your having lots of problems, consider removing all your Beta's, or other questionable apps (certainly the haxies). Follow this with a clean install. See if that improves things.
You can then re-install stuff you want, maybe try to figure out which one's giving you probs.

-just my 2 cents

Well I get a lot of strange stalls, where the system seems to stop working, then if you do nothing 10-20 seconds later the spinning wheel goes away and everything is back to normall.

Today I have had both IE and Word crash and I had to re-boot to cure the problem. All seems fine at the moment.

Would it be cynical to suggest there's a common thread to those two crashes?

I've had a few more problems with Jaguar than I did with 10.1 (on my Quicksilver at work), but at least the kernel panic is a lot prettier!

Still never had an unrecoverable error on my trusty G4 Cube...best Mac ever made. :)

733MHz QS, 256MB, 40GB -in a loving home

All you crashers, have you ever used a PC?
Were you afraid of this when you installed?

<babbling-don't-read>
It's to my knowledge that Apple has programmed fear sensors into jag to root out the fake mac fanatics. They have spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on finding out how dogs do it so they could incorperate it into their OS.
</babbling-don't-read>

I've had no problems at all, infact I find it crashes less. (well i can't say that, because i've never had crash problems...fact is i can count my crashes since 10.0.0.4 on my left hand)

10.2 doesn't highlight icons on the desktop that are Finder-created icon previews. Agreed, it's annoying.

For what it's worth, my current uptime is like 11 days or something (which is when I installed the 10.2.1 update)

This happened a few times, i logged out from my computer, reached the login screen (the one where u need to type a password) and then i closed the lid of the ibook, expecting it to sleep.

SOB. it never did. the screen went blank on me and none of the controls worked. luckily restarting my ibook gets the computer runnning again.

Now, I always have this fear of putting my ibook to sleep...

No. On my iBook 700.

Yeah, Jag acts up a lot for me. I actually had a total lockup of the system the other day, and I am constantly getting hang-ups on the machine. Also I notice internet seems to drop sometimes....I was wondering if that was the university network or my computer....guess it's the computer..

Too much weird stuff going on for my liking so far. :(

Hangs like mad on a DP 1 GHz, so that should tell you something...

I guess there's no way of getting stats on who has had no problems and who has had plenty, but i know I've been using OSX since Public Beta and since installing 10.1 I've never had a kernel panic or system hang on me. Never, zip, nada. When you are developing its so important to have a stable platform and OSX is that platform! So stop ya whinging.... :D ;)

All installs I have done were updates. No problems on a G4 733 DA QS (original), TiPB 500, DP gig QS (original) and Beige G3 w/ 500 MHz, Firewire/USB card, Radeon Orion PCI, 40 GB 7200 rpm HD (all works including SCSI yamaha CDRW). All but Beige sharing Airport through DHCP DSL. All have max Ram

Here is my weird Jaguar symptom - Sometimes when I am cleaning out a folder, that is, moving more than about 100 files at a time, the gay-positive beachball spins and spins and spins. After I force quit the finder, I see that they files have indeed been moved completely, but the window they were moved from does not update until I relaunch the finder.

Last night I moved 85 files at a time with no problem, but anything more than about 100 or so locks up the system with an angry beachball (and user)

Ideas?

I have been running X on my 550 PowerBook since 10.0.4 and have had only 2 visits from Colonel Panic. Those were both under 10.0.4. Under 10.1 I had programs freeze often especially after waking from sleep. I have had no system crashes or panic's since 10.2 and have only had one program crash (Chimera Navigator 0.5)a couple of times. I guess some of us are just lucky.

I have a new mirror face DP 1 GHz and it's completely, 100% perfect. No crashes, no hangs, no stuttering, no lost connections, no freezing, no problems whatsoever. And I use the hell out of this thing, every day for hours. I never shut it down and I never need to restart it unless I install something that requires it.

Those of you having problems like the ones I listed should be looking for ways to fix them, because it's not normal behavior. For example, anybody having problems with icons not being draggable should delete this file:

/Library/Caches/com.apple.dock.iconcache.<username>

And see if that clears is up. Also, try booting into single user mode and running fsck.
