View Full Version : Photos purport to show new iPhone's autofocus camera, compass

A chinese blog has blurry photos that appear to show an iPhone -- possibly the next-generation model -- using autofocusing with its camera, movie recording and the digital compass.

The series of images from UMPCFever make side-by-side comparisons between an older iPhone and the device running the new firmware, which is claimed to be a new iPhone brought over from the US and deliberately shot with blurry detail to avoid confirming details of the physical design. The claim is suspected of being at least partly true as many of the shown features would simply refuse to run on an iPhone 3G, even with iPhone 3.0 firmware installed.

Autofocusing is the most obvious difference and works simply: as with many touchscreen cameras and camera-equipped phones, it's only necessary to tap a particular point of the screen to focus the camera on whatever object is in that point; an aiming rectangle helps confirm where the focus rests. The mode appears to work in both photo and video capture and has a very visible effect on certain shots, bringing text into focus that would otherwise have been blurry with today's fixed-focused model.

Such a feature is expected not only to prove useful for better photos but to enable barcode scanners and other image recognition apps. These usually wouldn't work with current iPhones as fine details are often unreadable.

Bottom photos taken with old iPhone (left), new iPhone (right).

Additionally, the Hong Kong-based leak shows a previously unseen compass-only app that would use the built-in magnetometer for the new model; it's not sure if this would be a default app or is simply a test app to show the feature, as its only role is to indicate the current heading. Other images taken are for features that were already known to exist in the firmware, such as MMS, voice recording and an enhanced stock tracker, though a new CPU Activity app seems designed for engineers looking to check the behavior of the phone and monitor running processes.

While all of the features have been frequently rumored, their appearance in the photos tentatively confirms that some of the 2009 iPhone's biggest improvements will be those that bring it up to par with some of its tougher competitors in sheer features.

Interesting. Also you can see a chrome bezel in some of the pictures that contradict recent rumors of a black bezel on the next iPhone.

I read on MacRumors forum that the internal hardware is new, but placed in the old iPhone 3G casing. sketchy, if i must say.

Meanwhile, back in Cupertino town, a loud voice could heard shouting across the highway...

"Get to China and take pictures of everyone's dashboard!"

"No not the software one, their cars!!"

"And take down their mileage too!"

"I'm back just a few days and the ship is leaking secrets like a sieve!"

Someone just needs to make a sighting / targeting mirror attachment for the iPhone and that compass might actually be useful :) Then again... a magnetic compass doesn't need batteries.

Sketchy? Hardly. My best friend works for RIM and has told me that they often put new internals in old casing to maintain secrecy. It's not a stretch of the imagination to think that Apple would do the same.

Perhaps it's because they were scared s**tless while performing the spying.

From the storyline, they ARE in China, you know. I can't imagine the government treating such individuals too kindly if it caused any loss in any factory orders or a reallocation of orders to other manufacturers.

You do remember the certain video card company that got cut off at the knees by Steve because they bragged about being in the new Macs a few years back.... BEFORE the release date?

Just saying.

Now if using Google Maps the Magnetometer will automatically correct for Magnetic North and Geographic North, right? 8-) If I remember my high school Geography correctly...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_declination should be taken into account, especially for Turn-by-Turn services??? How do the Garmin thingys do it? Do they have compasses in them? For conversations' sake. (Don't tell me "Google it")

I'd imagine they would correct for it - it seems like a not-that-hard thing to do. I don't think Garmins have compasses in them, they use GPS tracking to figure out your heading. If that's the case then they wouldn't be affected by magnetic declination. Then again, I may be completely wrong I'm just guessing :p

The geographical location of the phone could be derived from the GPS. From that, the software just has to use a formula or table to enable a final display of true North.

Cool update. Most important update in terms of the camera must be instant start up. Now it takes like 10 seconds or more until you can take your first image. Kodak moment long gone.
I also think one finger touch anywhere on the screen while in camera mode should take a picture. It's not the best solution to have to find that tiny camera button when holding the phone in an uncomfortable position. Two finger touch could focus.

Interesting. Also you can see a chrome bezel in some of the pictures that contradict recent rumors of a black bezel on the next iPhone.
They could be disguising the device for testing or the rumors of different device types, high-end/low-end or world/Chinese versions will be made to look different.

GPSs locate cardinal directions from movement. If you flipped the device around 180° but still going in the same direction the display would not reorientate itself.

I hope that Google will use this compass in their maps software. Often, when I look for a direction it starts me out going in the opposite direction on the highway, getting off at an exit and then getting back on. Not a big deal, but it does mean I have to repeat the lookup until it gets it right or click next many times to get to my current point. This would be able to eliminate that if it knew my current heading.

PS: I really hope that the next Mac notebooks have GPS chip with an API that ties into the world clock weather widget, as well as allow websites to use your current location, like Google Maps and movie theater websites, to quickly location your position without the rigamarole of manually looking up and then typing in your location everywhere I go. I use my iPhone for this simply because it’s easier, but it does have its limitations.

On a Saturday? It’s certainly possible and offers cheap advertising, but if it’s true we should definitely see more juicy stuff come out the day of the Palm Pre, though so close to WWDC it wouldn’t prove anything one way or the other, but it would help your theory out a bit if there were some great iPhone 3G 2.0 shots leaked next weekend.

Seriously, the iPhone camera sucks big time. The ONE thing I keep getting mad about every day. I've had the K750, K800, 3 years prior to the iPhone they had way way better cameras. I used them on a daily basis to photograph sheets that I would have copied otherwise, a HUGE time saver and less wasted copies. Then there was THE IPHONE. Great device, useless camera, Apple-idiots in this regard!

I hope they changed that, otherwise I won't get the new one, I don't need a compass or more speed, hell, I don't even have GPS yet but wtf, its not a proper device anyway, just works with a cellular network, what if there is none?

I’d wager that the phones you mention are probably twice as thick as the iPhone. A better camera does require a certain level of physical space. If you want a good camera then a cellphone shouldn’t never be considered. If you want a good camera-phone camera then the iPhone shouldn’t be a consideration. It’s impossible to excel in every area, to expect otherwise is to expect disappointment. The iPhone will always be forced to limit its camera potential when compared to larger devices.

It will run the iphone version of Crysis, which will have the name Crysis but will be another 2D point and tap game. A screenshot of a field of grass and enemies just popping up that you have to tap to kill. ;)

I don't really see much point in the photos with relation to the new iphone, A lot of them show software changes that presumably will be available for the older phones too.

The interesting part of the new phone is the spec and any hardware changes such as rubber back, glowing Apple logo etc.

The pictures also look like there's a chrome bezel not a black one so perhaps that rumor is false, or this is just a release of the 3.0 software on a current generation phone and the next-gen phone isn't anywhere in sight.

The SE K750i is 20.5mm thick, the iPhone 3g is 11.6mm

The K750i was introduced 4 years ago and still to this day has easily one of the best cameras in a phone. While I understand you need certain physical dimensions for a camera, the one in the K750i does not take up the full depth by a long shot. With a bit of lateral thinking using folded optics via a mirror or prism, the optical path requirements could be accommodated I am sure.

There are camera modules of 2mp which use liquid lens systems with autofocus only 8.1mm deep.

The idea that you can not have a decent camera in a phone was disproved 4 years ago. Apple have few excuses IMO.

Has anyone else noticed that in the first photo demonstrating the camera, the blue box denoting the autofocus area (presumably) is not central?

That seems to imply the focus point can be manually designated. If that is so, I think the camera in the new phone might be very good, as there is no point providing features like that if the end result does not justify the bother involved in providing and using them.

The difference in the two speedometer photos has more to do with color balance and exposure than with autofocus. They're both in focus but the fuzzier one seems to have a longer exposure.

I agree (with the latter) but money talks. And it isn't limited to China and/or Russia, but North America too. Remember that story... the guy who said to got his new unreleased Mac mini in the metro? Where did that came from? Guess what?

Also: I have been to Ibiza for the past few years with my family, wife and kids, and every summer there was some sort of developers meeting. Guys dressed with black Komodo shirts and Apple notebooks. Taking all the best places... and thus someone is paying for it, and is sure wasn't ActiveState.

The "idiot" remark was an attempt at humour (and mostly out of character for me), whereas your posts are usually the strident, angry insulting ones so touché for picking up on the one time you could probably get back at me on that topic. :)

I do find it hard to believe (given what you've posted before) that you are actually in a position of responsibility over 20 other people.

The fact that you are in PR makes sense in that you often post things that are either wild exaggerations or basically just made up. It would be rare to find anyone actually dissing an OLED screen choice for instance, Zune or otherwise, so your implication above that people were intensely critical of Zune for including it is an exaggeration for sure. The general tone in the last six months has been that OLED screens are good, they are coming, and we hope the iPhone will have one too.

By saying "all the competitors are using them now", which phones are already using OLED screen or going to use this screen in the future that compete with iPhone?I'm not an authority on this, but it's my understanding that the Pre and the new Zune will use OLED, that several lesser known devices already do, and that the Riim devices will all use it or already do.

The fact that the "blacker blacks" will make the UI (which has a black background for this reason), fade into the front face of the device better is the main reason they should use it. You only have to see the new Zune demo to see what a great thing this is.

No matter how good Apple's screens are, if they don't have OLED, it's guaranteed that people will be talking about the "omission" all year until they fix it with the next generation. It would definitely be a distraction from the other aspects of the device and it's been a long time since you could say of any Apple product that it has a "lesser" screen than other products.

The beauty and quality of their screens has always been a big selling point for Apple computers of all stripes and one of their hallmark features. To have a crappier screen than the latest Microsoft dreck would be alarming if true.

While Zune is not exactly a phone, none of the other iPhone competitors like NOKIA N97, Palm Pre, Blackberry phones I can find uses OLED screen. I have a hard time finding more than 10 models of phone that use this screen, not to mention "all the competitors".

I remember OLED screen still has several concerns so I really doubt Apple will take the plunge when the technology is at its current state.

I think the only phone on the (European) market with a modern OLED screen is the Samsung i8910. There's also quite a few PMPs with OLED screens, including the Walkman X-series and Zune, as you pointed out.

The Palm Pre doesn't have an OLED screen and neither does many of the iPhone rivals being released soon (Nokia N97 and BB Storm 2).

However, most companies are ramping up to put OLED screens in their phones in the next 6 months. If Apple is going to continue on its yearly iPhone refresh cycle, the iPhone will probably look very dated come July 2010.

I know the thing is a little slow, but this is a gross exaggeration. ;)

It takes two seconds for the camera to be ready, not "ten or more."

I rarely use the camera so I gave it a shot. It took 4 seconds to open. Then I closed it, waited a moment and then tried again. It took 2.5 seconds. Then I played music from the iPod app in the background. It took 4 seconds again. The faster CPU and additional RAM should make it more consistent in all those tests and bring the startup down a little.

It doesn't vary up to "more than ten seconds" though so that's still an exaggeration. :)

Dude, its a PHONE camera. Get a real camera if you so impatient.

But that's like saying: "Get a bike when you hit a traffic jam". I mean I have a couple of other phone camera's and they do the job just fine, and why else would Apple upgrade the CPU and RAM? Cool update. Most important update in terms of the camera must be instant start up. Now it takes like 10 seconds or more until you can take your first image. Kodak moment long gone.

It isn't super quick but I'm motto sure it is that bad. As for those Kodak moments, as you get older you have a lot more time to get ready for them.

I also think one finger touch anywhere on the screen while in camera mode should take a picture. It's not the best solution to have to find that tiny camera button when holding the phone in an uncomfortable position. Two finger touch could focus.
That is utter crap! Sorry but the biggest feature on the iPhone's camera that caused problems for the photographer is the Touch screen shutter release. A fixed button or two would eliminate the framing errors and vibration inherent in the Touch screen approach. Plus being able to focus in quickly on the area of interest in a frame will lead to a lot more usefull pictures being taken. I could see rapid emulation of such a technique from mainstream camera manufactures. Frankly this would be real innovation on Apples part.

Besides all of that I simply don't buy your arguement about odd angles. A mechanical switch makes it easier not harder to shoot pics.

Now all we need to do is to wait for Apple to deliver so that we can objectively look at these features in real world usage. This camera could be a bigger improvement than we where hoping for. Poof is in the pudding of course so a few more days togo.

HUH? I can’t even begin to understand how a car analog regarding a traffic jam and the CPU/RAM of the device has to do with the small camera compared to larger phones with more room and dedicated cameras.

If you want a great camera, don’t rely on a camera phone. If you want a good camera phone, don’t get an iPhone. It’s that simple.

Name calling sometimes means a lck of education or social problems. That said, I wish you well and will send good vibes and rayeds your way.

So what sort of problems do your posts demonstrate?

Anyway, it is a known fact, as a national marketing and promotional director, responsible for 20+ managers workwide, that Apple uses rumors as their PR and leaks items in order to gain FREE publicity. That said, note the lack of posts regarding this topic. People just don't care.

You can't extend the lack of posts to indicate people don't care. Especially when overall activity in the forum is down. Just one alternative possibility is that it is summer.

These are not items people are interested in. I ask find it ironic, some websites reporting oled foe new iPhone and fanboyz are orgasmic when just the other day theses same people where knocking oled for the zune.

Might that have something to do with Zunes low resolution? Just because a screen is OLED doesn't mean it is high resolution with 32 bits of color.

Think what you want but it's all part of Apples publicity using China, it's out if our hands, as a typical excuse.

I can't believe any person with a rational grasp of business would make the above statement.

It's planned. Just like jobs departing or saying they are no longer doing mac world. All publicity stunts.

Peace and Godspeed.

Actually if my vocabulary was suitably stocked I'd be calling you all sorts of names. Frankly you have insulted anybody that has had to deal with a life threating disease. I hope other forum members take the above into account and suitably file all your postings. You really need to get in touch with humanity.

And they can do it any time they want... is doesn't have to be tied to a major release. Its a minor change that would be a good opportunity for off-cycle publicity.

If they don't do it next week, its because it doesn't make economic sense at the moment (e.g. they can't offer never-ending loss leaders they way MS does.)

The difference in the two speedometer photos has more to do with color balance and exposure than with autofocus. They're both in focus but the fuzzier one seems to have a longer exposure.

And the fact that they were not taken at the same time either. Notice the mileage and the seat belt indicator in the second photo.

The last time I saw spy photos of a vehicle, the pics were crystal clear. This stuff is just BS crap. It is not called Autofocusing, it is called SPOT focusing! The iPhone already autofocuses to take a picture.

I'm not an authority on this, but it's my understanding that the Pre and the new Zune will use OLED, that several lesser known devices already do, and that the Riim devices will all use it or already do.

The Pre doesn't exist yet. The Zune can't sell for shit (3%?). Even with an OLED screen, no one will buy it. Even Windows users are not flocking to it. No matter how good Apple products are, the people here always complain about something when a new product is released. All they do is bitch and complain. It is amazing how many people here have gotten their panties in a wad over an OLED screen, one that would only be 3.5" in size! The blacker blacks on a 3.5 inch screen?! It is a phone/iPod, not a 60" HDTV.

"So yeah, the OLED panel itself definitely lives up to the hype, but unfortunately we're not so sure a fancy display justifies the steep increase in price versus LCD-based rivals." (They estimate the converted price is $100 more than the iPod Touch. Are you ready for that with an iPhone?).

So if the iPhone includes an OLED screen, the number one complaint will be how expensive it is.

If everyone is begging so much for OLED, go out and buy one of these for $2,499. I am sure your BluRay movies will look great on an 11" screen!

i'll take the iphone's apps over blacker blacks anyday. i've heard this nonsense for 10 years from home theater snobs and half the time i can't notice it. the other half the time i don't want to pay the ridiculous premiums on the equipment.

iphone is a hit because for the second time in it's history Apple came out with a great product that is the same price or cheaper than the competition.

with the app store you can find something to do anytime you have free time. with the pre and zune you will get to enjoy looking at a black screen and amazed at how black it is

Engadget's conclusions are out of date. The Walkman X-series players sell for exactly the same price as the comparative iPod touch models in North America and Europe. Sony's music players have always sold for a premium over other non-Apple brands, OLED or not.

But I was and I am still comparing the current iPhone, with its lack of: auto focus, flash and a high(er) resolution camera, with other phone camera's. And my conclusion was, and still is that other brands and models do a better job. Apple really didn't step in with a better camera for nothing. It's all about user demand.

And yes, most people keep comparing apples with oranges... but I'm not one of them. Maybe that is why I am invited, by Apple, and you not. Thank you.

Alaska I plan a cruise with the 5 day train ride in the interior and points in Canada, as soon as I can convince my old lady it's not cold there in the summer. :D
